I'm not here to argue with you, just to mention that while Sumption is very articulate, I find his stance on taking the vaccine to be a logical fallacy, considering his stance on masks and the lockdown. He criticizes governments like they are a different set of people from the pharmaceutical industry. That's the biggest gov lobbyists in the US. Government is not a different group of elites. It is the mechanism of the elites. Sumption is criticizing the mechanism, not actually who's using it.

@@rachelbutler9105 his education is beside the point I'm afraid. You can read his own words in defence of politicians in his book Trials of the State. It's an excellent book. Also, I understand the desire for technocrats (what you're essentially describing) to take charge, but they have downsides too when it comes to politics. It all boils down to how you view the world. Put absolute power in the hands of a few very capable and intelligent people, you get something like Singapore, which is probably too authoritarian for British sensibilities, and somewhat more at risk of falling into the wrong hands. Johnson is, for all his obvious faults, still surprisingly popular among the electorate. So there's the argument that the electorate gets what it deserves. But something does need to change, we in the West cannot continue to choose such incompetent or, in another sense, toothless and ineffective leaders. We continue to have some of the best quality of life standards in all the world, but we'll soon fall behind the efficient and forward thinking Asian states in terms of competitiveness, and no doubt quality of life will follow in tow.

@ron matthews ''did you actually watch the video?'' Yes, I watched and listened to every word of it. ''Lord Sumption was highly critical of the government's handling of the Covid-19 outbreak. '' Indeed he was and has been from the inception. However, perhaps you can explain to me how a person can on one hand be critical of gov. policy whilst advocating not only the vaccination programme , but the mandatory introduction of Health Passports. Particularly in the vein that the vaccination programme, continuity of testing and Health Passports have always been integral components of gov. agenda. Do you opine that Lord Jonathan Sumption QC doesn't understand the implications of vaccine passports and is oblivious to the long term health implications of an untested, experimental vaccine. His hypothesis appears to be that the potential consequences of adverse health effects and digital enslavement are lesser evils than lockdowns which are not permanently enforcible in any event. Lord Sumption is a rather obvious 5th columnist whose connections to the Blair gov. go back nearly 20 yrs. How do you suppose a practising QC managed to get appointed to the Supreme Court, an unprecedented appointment for a QC with no previous judgeship experience and here he is in 2021 advocating Health passports . There’s no prizes for guessing who is in charge of promoting Health Passports, it is indeed the right hon. A Blair who is in turn funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Isn’t that a coincidence, would you not concur.

Sweden said party on and in the fortnight before christmas they had more deaths than Norway and Denmark put to together all summer, allegedly. It doesn't matter what the govt. does or did, there's always someone who knows better in this country and I predicted last march they will be blamed for not doing something and then doing something and then not doing anything soon enough. Then there's the weather to blame them for and any day with a "Y" in it. He says a plan said don't use coercion and let us use our common sense basically. He said that didn't happen, it bloodywell did and people crammed into trains like sardines until they were stopped or ran around ripping down statues or moaning about something that happened thousands of miles away.

I agree with much of the points Sumption makes, but he woefully seems to neglect the significance of CASE LOAD. The government has been aware of the likelihood of spikes with the lifting of restrictions, but the hope is that by spreading out these peaks that hospitals won’t be overwhelmed and hence more effective in treating the most serious cases.

@@garysmith208 But if they spread it amongst themselves they come to no harm and will soon become immune. It is up to the older population to protect themselves if they choose, possibly by staying away from the young until population immunity is achieved.

But they don't just spread it among themselves. There is social interaction and older people get hit. (young people living with older forinstance) we saw what happened when you lifted lockdown last year, it seemed to almost end and then it picked up again. Once vaccinations are out there then we can start to relax, but you can't relax early until that program is complete.

There is another element not mentioned by the learned judge in his assessment of the failings of the Government when the pandemic began. The Tories are always being accused of underfunding the NHS, so when there were tv pictures of people in Bergamo dying in hospital corridors, they were terrified of similar scenes in UK hospitals - so it was universal lockdown to "Save the NHS", nothing else mattered.

Italy imposed a lockdown - all over, not just in the North. I have lived through it and can tell you it has been devastating. AND it continues. In the face of highly respected scientists coming out to say that it is a useless and very harmful policy. In the face of respectable doctors coming out to say that, in defiance of Health Ministry rules, they have treated their patients as they normally would for the seasonal flu - and none died. Yet the population has been terrorised by MSM and go about with only empty eyes visible over the abominable face masks (compulsory outdoors as well as in). Italy is a good example of what NOT to do
