To me, this was the best podcast discussion I've heard in years. There was so much precision to identifying and analyzing the metacrisis that I'm going to need to listen back about 3-4 times and take notes. It was like you surgically dissected each of the constituent parts of the current cultural moment and took it out for us to observe each part through multiple lenses before carefully bringing it all back together. I will be raving about this one to others for years to come!
Hearing Jordan explicitly say “Christianity is the Religion that is not a religion” is so affirming to a driving current of my sense and all of the work on Climbing Mt Sophia
I often say the truth can be found between Christianity and Buddhism... for it is in this so-called 'space' we gain access to the higher-self (i.e., to our Divine Double) or future-self. That 'space' is Emptiness. It is about letting go -- the relinquishment of all grievances, all bitterness, all resentment... It is beyond theology and beyond pure reason... Emptiness is this "religion that is not a religion" as we so often say, but why?...it has to do with intent, attention, and relationships (self and other, self and self, self and the Divine-Self). In Christian terms 'emptiness' is about grace, mercy, and forgiveness (past issues)... In Dharma terms 'emptiness' is all about dropping views, desires, and fears (Present issues)... Both call us out of religion and into relationships that are based on service to virtue, not service to self.
Great conversation, particularly those last 20-30 minutes! Brought this quote to mind from Elder Aimilianos “The soul has to make a choice, and the outcome will either break it into pieces or enable it to sail to its destination in God. And the choice comes down to this: Will the soul accept or reject suffering?”
I personally resonated how he continued to point toward the practices and living out The Way. As heady as the conversation could be, the practical shone through for me. Excellent conversation gentlemen.
Please normalize audio. Thank you for an amazing conversation, and making it available for free. The difference in audio levels here is extreme so I just had to comment. You really should normalize or even out manually each channel before uploading.
I do apologize. I noticed this upon relistening too. Normally streamyard does this automatically and I've never had problems before. Thanks for your patience.
I think wisdom is going to take a quantum leap very soon because access to wisdom communities is becoming an information technology. The most valuable asset in the world is being in community with great people. Now we are exponentially increasing the access to these people/conversations.
1:12:51 Fr Alexander Schmemann's For the Life of the World is at the pinnacle of books I have read... think Mere Christianity as a must read book for anyone who is interested in the Christian Faith
1:26:57 admitting what you are ashamed of, and end up being loved regardless… the admission and confession is at the highest point of suffering, trusting God and a community with a completely vulnerable faith. Suffering can lead you to this breaking point
You indirectly told me to interview him. I remember a quote after his first conversion video being something like "and sam will probably reach out to him" and I decided that was a good idea.
This is reminding me of the Dru Johnson conversation. Where in the former you discussed the discrepancies between biological evolution and the goodness of God, here it's the discrepancies between social or technological evolution vs our own biology, and our wisdom. I see waves of the story of the Tree of Knowledge continuously appearing in concentric circles around us. Christ points the long way back, but I am trying to figure out how this applies differently to the different kinds of evolutionary dead ends: both biological and cultural/memetic
It's not the elders in American society who know how to make fire with sticks it's the younger generations who grew up with technology who have been teaching survival, generally speaking of course.
Ya, I noticed that relistening. It obviously sounded fine during the conversation. I wish there was an easy way to turn him up without going deep down a video editing rabbit hole.
@@transfigured3673 google/youtube normalize audio for whatever program you are using. Or adjust each channel manually. It's very easy and really is something every podcaster should do before uploading for an audience. I hope I'm not sounding disrespectful - I love your content and contributions.
For me, the challenge is synthesising my understanding of psychology and psychoanalysis into the Christian worldview. This has been done with Eastern religions with some success. But, to my knowledge, not with Christianity.
46:30 So when the Osbourne's say "no way, never had plastic surgery ever!" BUT the Kardashian's say "im gonna pay to do what makes me feel good about myself"]----> its the same chain just maybe a few links apart? Now its all catalogue faces: Triangle A5, Diamond C3, Buzz LY F20, ...idk man. Its rare to see the classical american beauty and natural screen persona these days.
I am SO curious to hear Jordan unpack more what it is exactly about “the Trinity” that was so helpful to him. But I think you were probably wise not to open that can of worms. It almost sounded like he had “incarnation” in mind more than “Trinity.” The embodied wisdom of Jesus - Jesus as an embodiment of the wisdom and word and love of God, Jesus as “The Truth and the Way.”
Hmm ..we have to be more grounded and solide .Maybe we wold need or accept to use and combine religion with some Jungian knowledge to .. both JBP and John Vervaeke and resently also Bishop Barron seems to have thatkind of insights
I imagine your Unitarian friends unfamiliar with TLC must be a bit confused by these videos. That was definitely me early on before descending into the rabbit hole :) BTW, I'll give some thoughts on this interview a little later on.
12:30 Self-terminating Interdependent, monoculture (loss of true multiplicity) Etc Technological Babel. And the solution for true paradigm shifting without global collapse is iconic thinking. Hi.
A lot of interesting facts, but very little actual wisdom. Not radical enough. This will not lead to resolving the crisis, that much is for sure. But OK, they get points for at least trying...
