Thought-provoking, as always. As a Binitarian, I have carefully studied Basil's On the Holy Spirit. I am curious how you viewed Basil's level of Biblical argumentation? He seemed to alternatively cite Matthew 28:19 and 2 Corinthians 13:14 as multi-purpose proof texts for many arguments.
@transfigured3673
@transfigured3673 2 месяца назад
I wish Basil had spent more time making his argument for why we should understand the spirit as a separate person from the Father, but that wasn't really his focus.

Sam at 58:46 says "Saved for what? What are you now to be?" - I think this should be obvious, we are now meant to be Creators like our father. Everyone's gifts will be different because we engage the Holy Spirit in unique and personal ways. But by asking for his inspiration and focusing our powers and energy on creating the ideas he reveals to us we emulate the eternal father. Whatever we create, be that churches, communities, children, food, movies or paintings, he will manifest his eternal goodness through those created things. "You will know them by their fruit." God's first requests of Adam were to maintain the Garden and create names for the animals before they fell into sin. I imagine once humanity is restored to our pre-fallen state we will go back to working directly with him to create new things in his universe.

@@EmJay2022 I think there were precursors of evolutionary theory in his time, certainly notions regarding an ancient earth, and eternality of matter, denial of creation ex nihilo.

The New Testament teaches that regeneration is by baptism by water and the Holy Spirit, that that is what brings God the Father and the Son to dwell in us by the Holy Spirit, as we love Jesus and keep his words..It also exhorts us to walk in the Spirit and makes us responsible for cleansing ourselves, as St Paul exhorts, but that is by trusting in the Blood of Jesus Christ and the sanctifying power of God's Word, Spirit and Blood. Like Hank said, it's both and not either or. We cooperate with God's grace as we are enabled to by His Spirit. St Basil would be addressing Christians when he speaks of what they are able to do.

55:00 "There isn't much else [after the forgiveness thing]". Yes and no. There is a lot done after--after that point of conversion, Protestants are taught and encouraged to get very busy with Bible studies, acts of service, church involvement, discipleship, missions, even getting rid of sin, etc. That's the "no" since most Protestants are not antinomians. But here's the "yes": all of that activity and all of that busyness gets disconnected over and over, and explicitly, from the pulpit, in books, and elsewhere, from what is the ground and core of relationship with God. That relationship is based, in the final analysis, on the "Great Exchange" to which we only contribute our initial mental ascent. And that's where Protestantism becomes problematic. What would St Basil say to the justification/sanctification/glorification distinctions that to me is the source of the Protestant mindset?

Sam what is the difference between begetting and adopting? Which of these two requires a human mother? Is begetting a trinitarian concept and adopting an unitarian concept?

A contemporary of Christ and his apostles that wrote about the meaning of “Holy Spirit” as it was understood in the Hebrew Bible: *Philo’s “On the Giants”* (V) (23) And Moses shows us this, when speaking of the creator and maker of the holy work of the creation, in these words: "And God summoned Bezaleel, and *FILLED HIM WITH HIS HOLY SPIRIT,* and with *WISDOM,* and *UNDERSTANDING,* and *KNOWLEDGE,* to be able to devise every Work."{6}{Exodus 31:1.} *SO THAT, WHAT THE SPIRIT IS, IS VERY DEFINITIVELY DESCRIBED IN THESE WORDS.*

@@transfigured3673 I’m a kind of “the inside is the outside” kinda guy. AI generated: George MacDonald’s concept of the cosmos being man’s imagination turned inside out suggests that the universe is a reflection of humanity’s creative potential. According to this idea, the cosmos is not an external, objective reality, but rather a manifestation of human imagination and creativity. In this sense, the universe is not a fixed, predetermined entity, but rather a dynamic and ever-changing tapestry of thoughts, emotions, and experiences. The stars, planets, and galaxies are not mere objects, but rather symbols and metaphors for the workings of the human mind. MacDonald’s idea is that the cosmos is a reflection of humanity’s inner world, with its own laws, patterns, and rhythms. The universe is not separate from humanity, but rather an extension of it, a manifestation of humanity’s collective imagination and creativity. This concept is reflected in MacDonald’s own writing, where he often uses fantastical and imaginative storytelling to explore the human condition. His works, such as “The Princess and the Goblin” and “The Golden Key”, are not simply children’s stories, but rather allegorical explorations of the human experience, with the cosmos serving as a backdrop for the human journey. In this sense, MacDonald’s idea of the cosmos as man’s imagination turned inside out is not only a poetic metaphor, but a profound philosophical and spiritual insight into the nature of reality and the human condition.

If the Father is holy & is spirit, why is a seperate personage who is the Holy Spirit needed? I've never heard anyone make sense of that. As far as Jesus, if he did pre exist I personally lean toward him being YHVH (the appointed one over Israel, their God) and YHVH is the only son that became incarnated/begotten in flesh (out of at least 70). El Elyon, the most high God (the father) has exhalted him above all the other angels/sons of God/elohim whatever u want to call them. Unfortunately Judaism & Christianity are now so far removed from the original 1st temple understanding of things.
