The first sentence he said is exactly how I see it. I am a software developer and when I don't support these things, people think it's because I'm against technology. I am against irresponsible people using powerful technology they don't understand.

So who gets to decide who uses it then? Do you get to use it? Believe me it would definitely benefit me if all AI apps remain as pip packages or run in Colab. That would weed out like 99% of the population. If the elites try to make us train our own models and get our own A100 servers it's going to be bad news. People won't stand for it.

@@Brian-ph7jg I am not talking about taking legal action, I am just saying that people are not responsible enough. Same thing happens with social media, they can be good, but big tech companies take advantage of people's ignorance to make profit. People get obsessed and dependant to that (for example social media likes and what not), and I think people will begin to use AI to replace basic human functions.

The corporations and authorities do understand it, but they will still use it irresponsibly to benefit themselves at the cost of everyone else. When you (anyone) suggests we should ban or restrict these technologies, you're really just saying the aforementioned should be the only ones who get to use them. As a green small town young man I attended a big city university eager to discover what the world outside my formerly narrow pre-internet existence could fill my mind with. The first, and several subsequent, lectures by humanities professor Ekbert Faas absolutely filled me with the idea of how the amount of what is out there to know is unfathomable. As I met people with great knowledge, and experienced those of that number who shared it and explained its concepts with no agenda other than to hopefully move the knowledge forward, I was thirsty to soak up as much as I could. There were moments of feeling amazingly inspired; something a small northern town upbringing hardly ever gave rise to. I ultimately didn’t pursue an intellectual path (probably due to a lack of confidence based on a lack of self esteem but I’m over that, I hope, and life is moving forward). It has been very satisfying to discover interviews with Professor Peterson over the past several years of RU-vid development. It has greatly advanced the intellectual level of my life. Feels good. Thank you Sir.

Gosh... There is soo much shade thrown around here. Here is what I see. An individual who appreciated broadening horizons. But naive enough not to be aware of the pretentiousness in some of these institutions. But why the discouragement? What I also see is a person with a better trajectory in life regardless, because the the expanded vocabulary itself. It just depends on what's the intent. Either use the words as pretentious fluff, or use it like tools to better understand reality and seek truths gems hidden in all the little cracks and crevices down rabbit holes that Dr. Peterson and other great people has uncovered for us already. The words we use essentially changes how we think. And when a new word is learned, that's another mental Lego piece, to use and play around with in our minds. Think of all the beautiful shapes we can make in our paragraphs we write, as well as words we speak to people. Simple words, simple minds and the opposite is true. It takes time and effort to even acquire more words and effectively use them, pretentiousness or not. And besides, it's much easier to reason with a person with expanded vocabulary regardless. God speed and keep going on your hero's journey buddy.

I want to perform an experiment on a college campus to test Gen Z's (my generation's) social skills. We'll have 40 or so students brought in over the course of a couple of months. And we'll tell them all that we have an AI we're testing out, and by random selection we have determined whether they will talking with the AI chatbot or one of the lab assistants. And at the end of the half hour long conversation they will have to guess whether they were talking with a human or an AI. And we will tell them that the AI has been trained to think it is a human, so no questions about being an AI are allowed. However, in reality, on the other end will be another one of the kids we're performing the experiment on, no AI at all. So it's a reverse Turing test. Not seeing if an AI seems like a human, but whether humans seem like humans. And my fear is that 9/10 times they'll all think each other are robots not humans.

@uponeric36
@uponeric36 Год назад
Well that's a hard statement to make when you consider the world. We might be grains of sand, but we have the potential of giants. Most people will have a very controlled, localized impact on the world, especially people with low access to electricity and the open internet which is the majority of the world at the moment. Regardless amongst the "sand" are leaders, billionaires, highly public speakers. And if you're speaking more generally about our place in the broader universe, what's the point? All you will ever know, for all you know, is this world and this life. And think, if you could even be 1/8th as well known or "heard" as Jordan Peterson for example, you would indeed be on of the most public figures in the world. Hell you'd probably still be that at 1/16th the popularity. Instead of ignoring your potential, giant impact, we should take responsibility to handle our impact with care. Frankly, it is a struggle to reckon with. You have more potential for power than the fascist ever did. Imagine if the word of Hitler was translated in multiple languages world wide the moment he spoke them. With AI, that type of real time translation will be possible to a decent enough extent. With social media the distribution of such would be simple, more a matter of investment than anything; and here's the killer part: with advanced enough chat bots acting you could fake a internet wide consensus in agreement with the nazi's. It's not fiction, it's nearly possible today (real time translation and getting enough social media bots without being shut down, and the resistance to fascist branding would be your only problems in this case. Only three things preventing the possibility of a fake internet wide consensus on genocide...) We are quickly, blazing past the point where *anything* on the internet can be believed to be part of a genuine discussion. So ever worse is the fact that we have to take responsibility right now, we can't excuse ourselves as sand playing a small part, not on scale our eyes look at, at this time in the world. Guilty Gear puts it well: "Heaven; Or Hell?"
@bioblazepayne
@bioblazepayne Год назад
@@uponeric36 while I agree we will have a very localized impact on the world, but I would also like to state, but not in time. For every person we teach, every child we have and raise, each person we interacted with echo's across eternity. As long as our actions continue to effect others, their life will be effected, and others through them. A quote from Edward Norton Lorenz, "When a butterfly flutters its wings in one part of the world, it can eventually cause a hurricane in another." now image that in time. Every action we do, this very post here striking a conversation, sparking a intelligent discussion. Though meaningless has impacts far beyond our localized world, far beyond it in the scope of time. I love this world, I love the people on it. I love life itself, and the meaning that it provides. I hope all of my actions, will become my echo's into eternity. For my life is but a grain of sand in the infinite beach of time. But through my actions, hopefully. The sandcastle will one day be complete. I'll settle for my localized impacts, and hope that my echo's reach farther.

Greatest thinker of our time. He is a great blessing to have.
@lavienestpasunlongfleuvetr2559
You cannot know that. He's certainly one of the most PUBLIC, but just because you don't SEE better thinkers doesn't mean they're not there. He certainly has blind spots, and some of them are pretty basic: he doesn't seem to grasp that no one's ever going to want to marry certain men because they're too creepy and unattractive, so 'enforced monogamy', i.e. a strong culture of marriage, is not going to help them or change their single status, and if some of them do manage to marry, they'll likely be terrible, abusive spouses. Then there's his primitive understanding of women and why they wear makeup. He thinks they only wear it to attract mates, that that's what a 'red lip' in the workplace is all about. In reality, however, very few women wear red lipstick at all, let alone in the workplace (although his married daughter frequently does, lol). His theory doesn't explain why they wear makeup in general (because he seems to see all makeup as falling under the same 'mate-attracting umbrella') to work when they're happily married or only work with women. The fact is that most of the time, women wear makeup in the workplace to give the impression of competence to their boss, so they look like someone who can handle the workload and don't look sleep-deprived or stressed. It has nothing to do with attracting a mate. Finally, there's his focus on the female rejection of men in 10 Rules for Living. It's like it doesn't even occur to him that men can be terribly cutting in their rejection of women. Whole groups of men, especially young men, can be even bitchier and more cruel to women than women are to eachother, yet Peterson either ignores this or doesn't even see it. I'm not saying some of his observations are not astute, but 'greatest thinker of our time' sounds more fanatical than rational and objective. In other words, it's a stretch.

He had great things to say, yet overall, aside from the good quote, "The bigger the toy, the smarter you better be to use it," I don't feel like he really answered the question. One of my main thoughts about Artificial Intelligence is that people will learn not to believe what they see and hear because fakes are already becoming so convincing that you won't be able to reliably believe anything. Artificial intelligence, just like the industrial revolution, will obsolete some jobs and menial tasks. Initially, people trained in those jobs will not like it because it's their livelihood and they will have to train for something else, but once it all shakes out, that will free humans up to do things that are less labor intensive and allow people to do things they have a passion for or can use creativity for. It will make certain things more of a commodity and those resources will not be as scarce. Because of that, people will have more wealth (like information wealth) and those things will also be taken for granted. In the Information Age, we are already replete with information wealth. That's why education has needed to shift from "telling people what to know" to "helping people learn how to sift through the information and judge what sources are trustworthy." Artificial intelligence will create even more of an information glut. That will require people to become much more discerning about what information to trust and use and what to do with that information. Also, regardless of what technology exists, the things that have always mattered are the things that will always matter, so I want to set about living based on the things that matter. Growing with others, closer to God. Loving, serving. Glorifying God. Rich relationships. Having free time. Spending time outside. Good self-maintenance (mental, physical, spiritual, social). These are things that matter. Newer, magical technologies are simply new clothes. Every new leap in technology has been accompanied by fear, uncertainty and doubt. We learn to adjust. Technology is anything that can gather, store, analyze, arrange and/or present data. With that definition, even a book is technology. The danger is always becoming more fascinated and focused on the technology itself instead of what the technology enables. For instance, a person could become obsessed with an iPod or an iPhone and the whole world all around the product instead of enjoying listening to music or utilizing a digital calendar, etc. This phenomenon is something to be cautious of as more impressive artificial intelligence gets introduced.

Fundamentally life is the capture and control of energy, power. Control is as essential to life as power. Having so recently grasped such profound power, power the likes of which has not existed previously in this world it is entirely understandable that we would lose control of ourselves. That does not mean this can be accepted. Control is absolutely essential. We must find ways to control ourselves with this power. Control equal to this power, balance is a must. While not currently a problem for us excess control is just as damaging, if in a very different manner.

I go with the route of predetermined exclusion of free will. The choices that evolve because of micro-actions are only as serious as the environment that we allow them to thrive in. The more you try to reduce reality to a point of absolute comprehension, the more relative it becomes in terms of why you decided to do it in the first place. It's kinda like the sociological counterpart of Heisenbergs uncertainty principle, which is why i go with the third option : observation. The world can operate just as well without me. That doesn't mean that i am not aware of the consequences should everyone do this, but its a personal decision that does not rely on the opinion of others.

p.s. Alchemy's Philosopher's Stone (generated via the Androgynous Child), as you must surely know, was not meant to convert lead into gold. That was a mere "angel investor bait" alchemists employed, since research, like everything, requires money. The Philosopher's Stone was meant to grant immortality. But only if one becomes an 'Androgynous Child' (a complete, wise man, born male but with the tolerance to pain equal to that of a woman, and traits from both genders) can said immortality be reached, after being paired with a partner who shared the same dream. edit: Sorry, I see you covered Alchemy's ethics too later on. I was thinking about how actions causes ripples, connecting us all in way or another. You could travel through time and let that lady in the US have a better piece or bread and you could have avoided WWII, insane to say but it is true. This chaos theory, basically. What truly scared me out of all of this is that is impossible to know which actions will end up in really terrible events, it doesn't matter if the action itself is good or bad, just look at the doctors and nurses that helped Klara bring his son into this world, they were only doing the best they could and we end up with Adolf Hitler, they could have messed up and saved humanity a lot of pain... perhaps, perhaps we would've ended up even worse. That's what truly terrifies me, we literally have no way to determine if what we are doing is going to end up well or in endless suffering. So, my guess, the best I could do is just that, my best, I can't control what others do but perhaps if we all do good nothing bad will ever happen. Maybe.

Mr. Peterson, Hello! I am a young man 21 years old, living in Russia, and I fully understand the heft of responsibility our time brings upon us with the powerful instruments that are coming into our lives right now. But I am just a student. I have little power to steer the world away from the numerous pathways to hell you have just mentioned. I dream of becoming a movie/content maker whos content becomes famous for giving people a clear code of conduct and inspiring all to take responsibility for our lives and live them the fullest, building a better and brighter world with the powerful instruments we now have at our disposition, but I often feel helpless and weak in face of things that are happening in the world right now and might happen very soon and in face of the might of the great 4th industrial revolution. I often looked for guidance in your interviews. Please tell me, what can I do to make the world take the heavenly path and not the hellish one? I am ready to make myself a man and do good things for the world, I am just afraid that I might not even get there in time. Thank you!

Tonight I felt compelled to research Jordan Peterson on his thoughts on AI. Hand to God and all that is holy, I recently dreamt of the technological giants(like the Transformers but as tall as the Empire State Building) he speaks of. I was in this vast desert landscape and they were marching with no regard to what was under them or ahead of them. I wasn't scared, I somehow knew exactly where they would step and made damn sure it wouldn't be on me! Another very unique synchronicity is I recently described myself as a "grain of sand on the beach" not implying irresponsibility whatsoever. More of the idea that the Universe is truly humanly unfathomably infinite. Jung would've had a field day with me... God Bless this man and his wisdom! ❤😊

@@ajmeyer66 no different to how human thoughts are generated then. It’s not like we decide what to think, thoughts just arise from unconscious processes and our ego-consciousness attributes volition onto them. You didn’t know what words you were going to type next until you started typing them. You don’t know what you’re going to think next until you’ve already thought it. Our brains linguistic processes aren’t so different from text completion. Those who practice meditation are very aware of this aspect of our being. Also yes it does respond with the most likely answer, even if it is incorrect sometimes, but it will not LIE convincingly, not all falsehood is deception. In this regard it is no different to an arrogant human. Arrogant and lacking in appropriate amounts of self doubt, but still no different to most humans.

He's right about us all being androids though. He hinted at a lot of really deep things without going too far to lose the majority of his audience. I'm in line with the homotechno hypothesis, but I think it goes way back to maybe the invention of the automobile. Humanity has transformed itself from a lot of independent individuals into a removable nucleus. The car is an exo skeleton built in line with the evolutionary tree that has brought human beings from sharks. Like Jack Johnson sang - the wheels become your feet. And now when you plug your headphones into your ears, the phone literally becomes a neuro-electrical extension of your brain, and the computing power of computers and the Cloud are an extension of the human brain and its capacity for thought and memory. And so on.
