The fact that stress releases a bonding chemical for men explains why soldiers are forever bonded to their "brothers in arms." My husband's lifelong friends are the ones he met in the army, and they still try to get together every year though they all live in different places throughout the country.

@mariahspapaya
@mariahspapaya 19 дней назад
As a woman with a more masculine temperament, I experienced this first hand throughout my life being lower in agreeableness. I’ve always gravitated towards men who are not hypermasculine in a sense, especially since I’m not hyperfeminine. This is why I’ve struggled like Mikhaila in befriending most girls growing up. My boyfriend is pretty neurotic and empathic like me, but he is much more agreeable than me, which makes him seriously hate any sort of confrontation. I love how safe he makes me feel and he doesn’t start fights just for the sake of starting them. We talk things through and move on. He is a bit neurotic like me where we are over-thinkers, so I think two neurotic people can be with each other, but both needs to reassure the other and be strong for them like my boyfriend does for me and eases my burdens. Unlike my previous relationships, where they did not make me feel safe or were able to be present with me when I was upset. I’m very lucky :)
@daedricdragon5976
@daedricdragon5976 19 дней назад
I too believe this to be the case. I think that two neurotic types can be together and have a healthy and thriving relationship (with all the potential challenges that come along with being highly neurotic) provided that they are willing to work on themselves and their lives, and be there for each other.

This was quite out of character for a JBP podcast, as he appeared so charmingly and intimately with his bride and daughter. It was wonderfully revealing of the incomparable Dr. Peterson in an unguarded conversation with two of the most consequential women in his life. Very heartwarming! I confess that I had no idea what the three of them were technically discussing, but I really enjoyed their familial interaction. At the conclusion I felt that I knew him profoundly better from a human point of view, than as just the towering intellectual personality he is where we normally encounter him. Its impossible not to like and admire Dr. Peterson in both roles, father and husband as well as brilliant philosopher and world renowned celebrity.

His shoulders are broad though again in front of the camera he looks very approachable and puny but that is not the case. He is taller and broader in shoulder than one would expect. I think the public has always loved strong female leads, even over the top badasses. Ripley in Alien is a major icon, introduced over 40 years ago. Sarah Connor, the cyborg defeating mother in the Terminator series. Woke movies, on the other hand, are all about putting 'the patriarchy' in its place, preaching to the audience from their imaginary moral high ground, and they abandoned the hero's journey. In Woke Hollywood, women are powerful badasses because they're women, not because they earned it or faced brutal hardship, challenging them to step up. Audiences just want an entertaining storyline basically. The original Star Wars was a simplistic fairy tale but hugely successful because it embraced the hero's journey. Luke journeyed from innocent farm-boy to Jedi Knight, defeating evil! Had he been a woman, I think the series would have been just as successful, even in the 1970s.

4:00 - I can only speak as a man but this makes me think about the male fantasy of rescuing a damsel in distress. I'm a pretty big romantic and the idea of proving to a woman that I want her and only her, and that I will do everything I can to keep her safe, happy, and laughing was the strongest motivation I ever had as a man. Whenever she would ask me to lift something heavy, hold her hand or wrap my arm around her, or when she wanted to be comforted after a tough day... Those are the moments I remember. There's a deep aching need for men to be needed by their woman.

So stress is a catalyst for bonding in men. What is the connection, if any, between bonding and learning? When we teach combat skills we intentionally increase the stress in the training regimen as the training I g syllabus progresses. This helps imprint the training to make it more of a condition ed response. In a deadly force encounter adrenaline diminished our ability to formulate responses so we need to have a conditioned response to fall back on lest we dither away the last few seconds of our lives. At least, that's the way it's been explained to me.

it is very interesting discussion particularly that neuroticism is not necessarily an enduring personality trait but tied to depression...never heard that before, but it makes sense. It kind of flies in the face as it being part of the OCEAN model no? Regarding females being more threat sensitive....this explains why they are often accused of being petty and having cat fights, but it is important to know this is not a weakness, as it is usually portrayed, it is for an underlying biological reason. My father was neurotic and it was not fun...he was very sensitive to tone of voice, perceived rejection and criticism, and it becomes a vicious circle...angry outbursts cause rejection. He said he had anxiety, but I always thought he must be depressed too. I think this may be mixed up with NPD or BPD as well. As someone who also has depression, anxiety and neurotic tendencies, we did not mix well to put it mildly. A neurotic person needs to be with a stable person...100%.

I consistently score in the upper 90% with Neuroticism. It definitely affects me deeply. The people that I casually interact with believe that I'm a peppy extrovert. Even family members like my grandmother believe this to the point of arguing with me. They didn't see my chronicle depression growing up. I have just learned to visually compensate for myself on the surface in a convincing way. It takes so much energy. I also score under 5% in Extraversion. I'm a very authentic person, but only when I believe that it is acceptable or productive to be so. Which, as you can imagine, is only worth letting loose at the occasional funeral.

I'm 1st percentile in neuroticism, and it makes being with most women difficult. I've had lots of great relationships that last 1-2 years, but from where I stand on the neuroticism spectrum, most all women make mountains of molehills too often, and as they feel more free over time to share more and more of their tumultuous emotional worldviews, the stress of being required to empathize with it all takes too much joy out of my life. If I ever find a very low neuroticism woman who's fundamentally happy and secure deep down, and is attractive to me in a few other significant ways, I'll have met my match.

Re: feminine men and masculine women: You must look into the 4 types of energy by Carol Tuttle. She’s a bit progressive but the main current of her program is enlightening. She takes the 4 energies (wind, water, fire, earth) and talks about how every person is dominant in one of them, and it shows in not only temperament, but on their faces and many other aspects of their looks, movement, and habits. I could have guessed that Tammy was on the more masculine side because I know she’s a type 3 (fire), and that you were on the more feminine side because you’re a type 2 (water), and that’s how they usually roll, regardless of gender. I first got into the program because different colors look and feel better on different types of people, and knowing all that helped me feel better inside and out. When I wear the wrong colors, my skin literally hurts because I’m extremely sensitive to energy. Just a fun fact, 1 (wind) and 4 (earth) are opposites, as are 2 and 3, and opposites almost always end up marrying each other. So I guessed Tammy was a type 3 before I even laid eyes on her because you are so obviously a type 2! Just like me 😊 I love your courage and kindness. Thank you for showing us such a great example of a power couple.

I think the chemical thing might be a natural evolution thing of protecting the woman so you have to engage potential danger which is scary and dangerous and stressful but you're making the woman safe so she bonds better 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm curious if women don't bond as strong as men during tough two a day work outs for sports. Men certainly bond over shared suffering. Two a days at football camp in the summer. Military deployments and even training ops that are state side have these effects. Seems like it would work for both sexes.

My spouse & I have a similar situation where the expected sex-normal inclinations are flipped. I can’t say I have a particular issue with either sex or any gender, but I’ve had ADHD & cPTSD since childhood, so I rub others the wrong way. Meanwhile, my spouse is highly neurotic & OCD, but just seems to soar.

Question for Dr. Peterson: Is neuroticism more correlated with body size than sex? This is a hypothesis I'd like to see tested. I predict smaller men would have similar levels of neuroticism as the average woman as he would have to be more threat sensitive.

I saw some clip recently saying smaller men are more sociopathy prone on average. Guess why...

If true I'd wonder if it's relative to the average size of the community. I imagine neuroticism might come from losing physical encounters as a child.

@ShmoeBoe
@ShmoeBoe 17 дней назад
@@123asdasdasd-jh1iy I believe so. Sports are good for building confidence which is inversely related to neuroticism. I'm not sure if you'd be able to completely do a 180 though, your past would always have some effect on your psyche. It's something to think about for sure.

My husband is super polite, and low in humor. So, I'm the one that makes the "dad" jokes in our marriage. It works to laugh at my constant faux pas in social situations, since I'm so rude (I really don't mean to be).

I scored 99% in neuroticism (I genuinely answered honestly) and 98th percentile in trait openess. I guess it is accurate because I am a song writer and my songs are particularly weird and moody.
