Video on inner child: • My First Ayahuasca Exp...
Jordan Peterson has hundreds of hours of interviews and lectures on RU-vid but with so much volume it can be tough to distill the essence of his life philosophy. And to make things even more difficult, he sometimes uses abstract language like this. It's within the individual that redemption can be... manifested, let's say. And even in so far as the state is concerned because the state's proper functioning is dependent on the proper functioning of the individual rather than the reverse, most fundamentally.
That is actually the most concise explanation of his life philosophy that I've heard but what does it mean concretely? Well, today we're going to break down the three things that you should and should not in order to live an exceptional life according to Dr. Peterson. And I'm going to simplify as best as I can in order to keep this simple to understand; forgive me for that Dr. Peterson. Also, at the end, I'm going to get some concrete actions to you that you can take today in order to move forward on each point.

@@tyskbulle not to knock your MJ quote here, this is more for the "you can't help others until you've helped yourself" crowd, which i appreciate isn't directly implied by starting with the man in the mirror. my point is that this train of thought can lead people to total egoism; a selfishness that puts the focus on your own individuality rather than the way we interact and create a community. in a sentence what i mean is, *"dont feel like you have to stay in front of the mirror until you're perfect before you go out and try and help the world"*, because if we do that, we'll create a world of narcissists, staring at our own reflections waiting for perfection while the world burns. Even if we were to "perfect ourselves" first, it may have been so long since our initial struggle we may not be able to relate to it any more, making us worse at helping others. this is a common problem for professors teaching undergrad classes; it's been so long they don't understand how anyone could be struggling with such simple ABC level stuff, making them, in that scenario, poor educators. alternatively, it's often "broken" people who can help each other the best, because they relate the most, like the comments sections of self-help videos, or in other similar forums, such as support groups.

The problem with the way this claim is made, whether it is by Peterson or by other ultra-conservatives, is that it's always strongly tied to the subjective opinions of the person making it. "Tidy your room" might seem like an acceptable standard, ethically benign and good advice. Yet appearances are often deceiving. The way it is used to imply that a person's ability to impose order on his surroundings is directly tied to his worth and intelligence is a standard that is not only ethically bankrupt, but also divorced from reality. Even putting aside the numerous studies that suggest a correlation between a chaotic mind and intellectual potential, simply by looking at the examples of history anyone would realize that this standard would lead a society to dismiss Einstein (which the fascist Nazi regime that valued obedience and absolute order did, losing one of their most valuable assets), Isaac Newton (arguably the greatest mind in recorded history) and many more other great artists, scientists and even politicians. Again I have to stress that this is not really about whether we should judge someone by his willingness to tidy his personal space, but about the dangers of idealizing order and structure to the point that one places it above the ideals of liberty and justice, something that I have regularly observed Peterson doing. Behind his neo-conservative rhetoric there is a darker shade of the colors he sports. He often references freedom of speech and yet his rhetoric routinely strays to denunciation of attempts to change society be means of conversation and a great willingness to dismiss people rather than their opinions. Another point one will notice on closer inspection is that he overuses "arguments from authority", or arguments that do not mainly rely on logical consistency but rather the arbitration of a particular individual or institution. Not to say that he does not have a certain mastery of logical arguments, but rather, that he seems to, perhaps without full awareness, dispense with that critical pattern of thought when asserting certain values (e.g. every single damn time he uses the term "traditional"). All these points combine to the rather chilling suggestion, that beyond conservationism, the ideals he champions are deeply authoritarian. That is not to say that he is necessarily unintelligent, or incapable, or that all his suggestions are invalid. The real problem is that besides these qualities his dogmatic point of view and attachment to the ideas he has been raised with seem to undermine those values and drive him to a severely harmful political movement. [Based on his opinions on child rearing and his references to his family and early life; he probably had a strict childhood that effectively indoctrinated him into his core ideas, those being religious, political and even rational.]
@willnash7907
@willnash7907 6 лет назад
At this point I would like to add that the idea of people not deserving to voice political concerns until they conform with a societal norm is founded on the base ideology of fascism, particularly that of the '30's and Hirohito Japan.

This video helped me a lot to think about my mother. What could I do to help her around the house and I thought about three things. A, I can put away the clean dishes to help her for a start, B put the cans that were on the table put them in the recycle bag, C put the trash into the trash-bag. I did those three things and stopped myself, while I was watching this video. I find it funny how JP went into the public sphere of debate looking to be as impartial and brutally honest as possible....and now finds it extremely hard to not be brandished a "right wing bigot nazi!!!!!". He is the epitome of the notion "an uncomfortable truth is better than a comfortable lie". He speaks of holding yourself accountable for your actions, putting in a good work ethic, holding yourself to the same standards you preach at others online, and the value of freedom of expression and speech and will not yield to government mandated speak. Extremely tame views that most people would consider reasonable...yet still gets character assassinated as a "Nazi". It speaks volumes how scared of personal responsibility those people are more than Jordan Peterson could have ever put into words.

In my early adulthood I made it a conscious point to practise this: _do not emulate the undesirable actions/behaviours of other people_ So, much of my accumulated wisdom today is not so much about what's the correct thing to do, but recognising the observed mistakes I should not be doing. To put it as another phrase, "Those who do not remember and learn from history are doomed to repeat it." The result is I've forged relationships and reputation that hardly makes me appear like an enemy to others. Based on the feedback people give me, I can sincerely believe this is a direction I can continue ahead.

I tell the truth about how I think and feel to people all the time. It's really hard, especially when it is telling the truth about your opinion on things to a friend that disagrees with you. I lost one friend and gained another. I realized how manipulative, vulnerable and how much of a big two faced liar the friend that I lost is. But the friend that stayed with me even after realizing that we don't always agree taught me how to look at the world more positively and how important being open to new ideas is. I am very grateful to JP for opening my eyes on the importance of truth and I really wish more people would learn from him to.
@KingOath
@KingOath 3 года назад
One of the hardest things is learning how to tell the truth tactfully, constructivly and with emotional restraint. Nobody ever taught me how to do that. I was only taught how to be polite, how to blend in and not stir the pot. I think there is way too much emphasis on politeness and being “nice” these days and not enough on actually standing up for your beliefs or telling it how it is. I grew up believing that being nice was a key priority in life, only to realise that it’s basically useless for any real purpose and one is much better off being a little bit arrogant, disagreeable and selfish in the right measure and at the right time. Because once people figure out that you won’t bite back, they will just trample you for their own benefit until there’s nothing left of you.

As a young adult, I was in that place of keeping my mouth shut. It was a constant struggle attempting to be polite but knowing I was weak. Jordan Peterson is a car salesman, he's slick. He's repackaging and reselling a bunch of already proven concepts from other self help people. As for his "activism" for free speech and fighting bill c-16 he's acting as if this was the tipping point, that the next day people would be arrested for accidentally misgendering people. Even thought his Provence had this rule on the books for over 5 years. And this was it just being passed Federally in Canada. See, the law is just to add "intentional misgendering" into the language of hate speech, so if you employ someone who is trans, and they say "please refer to me as female" and they are seeing a therapist, and having to live for a few years as the gender before they can start talking about surgery. And you as their employer say "nope, I'm going to call you by your born name, and I'm going to call you butch and manly and mr big-cock" in an effort to bully the person out of their job, to make this as illegal as firing someone because you found out that they were gay. What JP paints is a situation where someone is working in a store and someone walks in looking androgynous, and because you didn't refer to them as Zim when you first introduced yourself to them, that you'd going to be taken in handcuffs to a Gulag. That is just not what the bill, or the existing legislation in his region dictated. It is specifically for situations where someone is being harassed using their old name and gender. The same thing happens with landlords that want to get rid of their trans-tenants, they start bombarding them with letters in their birth name. It's about expanding the existing protections that already exist to cover another group of people. The only people who should ever be worried about this law, are bigots who want to bully and harass trans folk. And while I can be intellectually honest enough to say that I actually believe that people who hate trans people, should still have the right to free speech. Mine is purely a consequential reasoning, because the bigots opening their mouths and being harassers and bullies put a target on themselves. The rest of the good people society won't have anything to do with them, they will boycott their businesses and refuse to rent from them. Society shouldn't need the intervention of the state. That the best disinfectant is daylight, and by making a law to force bigots underground you push them into quiet corners where they can pas as regular good people of society. But even that I doubt from time to time, as I'm reminded how powerful segregation was, that it certainly required intervention to bring in the civil rights act. Is the civil rights movement enough or does it need further legislation like bill c-16 to keep the tide moving towards a more inclusive society?

I found that trying to be truthful does not work in your favour with narcissistic people, but against you during my life, but I have noticed that people who do know me are trusting me more. I would argue that narcissists do work on chipping away at your self esteem, and it is hard to defend yourself when attacked.

The only way to deal with a narcissist is to go away from them. Long term. Even professionals say that. They don’t want help or to change, so take care of yourself.

David Goggins- inspiring people like no other - in many ways the actualization of much of what Jordan Peterson says. I don't need to hear about him as I've listened to everything he's said but many in your audience haven't. Talk about David Goggins!

If you opt to go to podcast you'll want to pay attention to how much of your content is 'audio' or 'audio/visual' based. I mention this as the main time I listen to my podcasts is either when I'm driving or cooking; both of which my eyes and hands are doing something other than looking at my phone. Not a deal breaker by any means; just something to keep in mind on how people will consume the content.

Hahaha telling the truth is different than having no filter, but I feel you on that. Sometimes it’s better to wait until a different moment to tell the truth, or to figure out how to say it the best way. It’s important to do it, but it’s important to get timing and delivery as good as you can too -not just blurt things out all the time. Lol

Sycsa, “Since you obviously want to improve your English.” is not a grammatically correct sentence. Sword. Live. Die. (Also, “practise” is an acceptable verb form in British English.)

To live the truth is to be able to overcome fear and the desire to control. Subtle forms of control is enabling. Enablers are the hidden liars of the world in contrast to the narcissists that are the liars that are easily visible. Enabling is lying within yourself and makes you a prisoner to your lies. Praise I AM, Michael Idarecis
