This is remarkable. I am a Christian and I have a deep contending relationship with God. I have never heard someone explain exactly what my inner emotions are. This was spot on. Belief in God is not quite the point. Your relationship with him in fact, is.

So, what you are saying is that you have a deep "contending" relationship with an unspecified God, right? You do know there is more than one God, right? What if you had deep "contending" relationship with Allah, would that make a difference in your life? If you can't explain your own inner emotions, then you have some serious exploring within yourself to do.

@@kennyw871 You are focusing on dogma and not belief. The worst part of all religions is not the belief but what influential "believers" say it means to believe. The great irony between the 3 great monotheist religions of the world is they believe in the same diety, share some of the same stories and believe many of the same ideas. God in the Christian religion is the same God in Judaism and Allah in Islam. It's the dogma that is put upon them that divides us, the arbitrary rules put upon us by other humans not the mere revelation of the Divine. It's the conflicts between Catholics and Prodestants, Sunni and Shia, Jewish pograms throughout history.. Strip away the dogma and that would solve a great many conflicts between people on this earth when they understand that they all share a belief in the divine and that devine isn't so diametrically different that blood should be shed over it..

Faith is what moves us humans to accomplish and conquer things in life, without it, we're nothing. We can achieve as many things as we want, we'll still feel empty deep down inside though, and that's because we're lacking faith and spiritual guidance. I'm only 15 and would've taken my life if it weren't by my faith in Christ and my own willpower. God is not simply going to make your life better, you've got to battle for it.

@ Gustavo, You're only 15. It wasn't "God" that did those things, it were your actions with a bit of luck. Luck is like a series of bets. Unlucky people just are going through losing streaks of simply doing the wrong things at the wrong time, all the time. lucky ones are just going through winning streaks or doing the right thing most of the time. If you believe in "God" as the biblical god with exact words and commands, then that requires more extraordinary proof than saying I believe there may be a creator for life in this world. Same thing for any religion that alludes to knowing God personally who gave an instruction book.

You and your thinking are the proof of evil, and if we can prove true evil in the world, goodness must exist for there to be a balance. How is it that you can believe in climate change, with zero physical experience, to prove it (meaning, it has not directly affected you on a catastrophic level)? Because you, I would assume, have no expertise in the matter, but believe what others have told you regarding it. Just watch An Inconvenient Truth (2006), just to give you an example of what the so called "experts" go so outrageously wrong, regarding Global Warming. It does not mean we lose the right to say that, because knowing is in the intellect. Action is spurred by the will and to say our will ALWAYS acts in union with our beliefs is not the case...the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. The BlackWolf I don’t know that intellectuals have no place for the unknown, just not a claim of knowledge of what has only been hypothesized. Most People who say they believe in god mean they have faith that he exists. They have faith he exists, they think it is the most logical conclusion to reach, but god is not a reality, rather a hope. To believe is not the same as to know. We never say we believe in what we know beyond a doubt. I know it’s a joke 🤣 but if we may take it seriously for a second; if someone is asking you that you ought to ask why they are asking that, especially if you know you do love them- the subtext suggests you did something wrong and they’re cutting to the conclusion that you may not love them at all as a result of what you did or have been doing. Not a simple question at all, in fact, a loaded question... or it could be a wall of insecurity constructed by their life experiences with “love” I suppose 🤔

In my faith, I've found that it has not been those who necessarily agreed with me who have helped me grow, but rather, those who have challenged me and asked deep, honest questions from a place of critical curiosity, questions I have had to search our myself. It is in seeking the hard answers to the questions of my critics that I have grown in my own faith. Mr. Peterson raises a valid point - belief implies moral obligation. I think if most Christians are honest, they're honest about how often we fall short of our own ideals. And it's one thing to acknowledge God's grace, to know that we are forgiven for however many times we fail. But it's another to strive for the best, to desire to follow Jesus' example to the full. Frankly, I don't think we can do that without acknowledging grace; otherwise, our tendency would be to give up completely the first time we fail. Grace motivates us, in that we want to please this great God who is willing to overlook our shortcomings and empower us to succeed. Mr. Peterson, my hope is that you know the grace of God.

Not only is he one of the greatest thinkers and intellectuals of our times, but he's also one of the most courageous, humble, and decent. As Peterson has said in other contexts, a person should recognize his/her capacity for evil. I agree. The quote from Mark chapter 10, verse 18 is: "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone." I can see how one might on a quick reading assume that it means "Only God is good, so I (Jesus) am not good." However, many biblical scholars think, based on what follows and from other verses in the Gospels, that by replying in this manner Jesus is leading the man to a truer knowledge of who he is; that is, he is God and not just a "good teacher" as the man had just addressed him. So it seems that Jordan doesn't use this quote accurately here. In the bigger picture, I think Jordan is just hung up on what "I believe" means. A lot of Christians probably think deep down: "I can't be 100% sure of anything metaphysical, but I will live and act as if God, and Jesus, do exist."

Much respect to hear an educated thinker describe the complexity of the question, Do you believe in God? Much of the western world who grew intellectually stopped growing spiritually. Their view of God remains a white haired man with a beard, drawn with crayons sitting on a cloud. Some people grew and are growing spiritually as they are growing intellectually for their whole lives. These two ways of knowing compliment each other like the mind and the heart. Who will I be if I am my complete and full authentic self if I seek to find with my full human ability? Is that not what God would expect of me? What constraints or rules will I live between? With a rich understanding of the histories of spiritual and intellectual philosophy and psychology growth our expectations can become exceptionally high and seemingly out of reach. We are not gods, we are human. Jordan Peterson speaks of the difficulty of trying to seek the fullest understanding the deeply profound life changing belief in God. He speaks of stepping into the world each day physically and intellectually with the full weight of all the thinkers that came before him. It could feel like feeling unworthy, and still crawling through mud. For me, I cannot live life under that weight. I choose to believe in goodness and love, and in my own little humble corner of the world that is God to me. It is enough to push me to the best version of me i the world where I live, and encourages me when I fail. Yes, it seems simple yet it is not, and I cannot face each day feeling paralyzed.

I love seeing Peterson wrestle with God as he's talking about how the people of God are those who wrestle with God. And I completely agree with Peterson that an "integrated" person, an honest person, will act out their beliefs so that they follow through with what they say they believe. But that being said, with all of his study of the Bible (which is really extensive), he still somehow missed the main point of the whole thing. In John chapter 1:14 it says, "for those who believed in his (Jesus') name, he gave them the right to be children of God." And then a few chapters later in the same book John introduces Jesus as "the sacrificial lamb of God." And then at the end of the book, when Jesus is hanging on the cross looking down at the people who nailed him there, he prayed to God and said, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do." The whole of scripture is telling us that if we seek to EARN the right to be a child of God before we simple put our faith in how good he is, then we will never actually get there. Peterson said multiple times, "I don't feel like I have the right to say I believe in God!" But this idea of putting your faith in God, faith even the size of a mustard seed that's so small but will grow into a huge tree, is enough for you to gain the RIGHT to become a child of God. It isn't that we earn anything good. The bible also says "for what we earn is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Being a child of God is a gift from him, and this gift of incredible sacrifice on his part should actually motivate us through gratitude to seek to do good in the world. If it is used as an excuse to continue practicing evil then it is simply an insult to the cross and shows that the person doesn't understand how truly serious and excruciating Jesus' sacrifice was. So, I love a lot of what Peterson said here, but if he could just grasp the idea that he doesn't have to "do good" to earn the right to be a believer in God, he simply has to recognize that he isn't good but Jesus paid the price for his lack of goodness, then he will experience a freedom to do good without the weight of guilt on his shoulders. "All who confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart that God raised him from the dead will be saved." This is what it means to believe in God. Admit that Jesus is Lord of all to yourself and others and believe that Jesus historically raised from the grave through the power of God.

I think you missed the point my friend. Thats precisely is JP point in referencing the hypocrisy of those who say they believe in God and dont act that way. His example in the beginning was the Catholic Church. This too is where classical Judaism differs greatly from this type of Christian theology. Judaism believes in a redeemer and messiah and an atonement through this godly emissary. However free choice granted to us bears full responsibility of out actions done unto God or unto another human, or animal etc...So to just believe in Jesus and be serial killer or baby killing Nazi is exactly the Christian concept he is "wrestling with"..... I hate myself for continually falling short of Yahovah's glory and perfection! I hate that I can't do it on my own! People get tired of me cause I'm always talking about Yahovah. Just 1 word mentioned in a conversation will cause me to think of him! I've always been like this too! In 7the grade the buddies I talked to about it called me preacher Dave. My wife can't stand it neither but, I understand now that that's me! It's just who i am. I believe we are all here for His glory, and that we are created with purpose. No I'm not a "good man"! If I claimed that I was, I'd be a liar! Sometimes fear is our friend. If you pay attention to scripture, you'll begin to see His character, and glory, and notice that He takes a thing like fear, and rightfully use it to his advantage, and for our benefit! He told us that He did not give us a heart of fear, yet He tells us "blessed is he who fears Yahovah"! That's my point anyway! Fear is unholy! But when used by The Holy one, it is righteous because who he is! Remember, "there are none like Him'! I should fear Him more! I truly love Him, but my actions aren't serving others enough! I'm always some kinda addict! Weather it's football games, beer, cigarettes, marijuana, prescription drugs cause, I dont think there's any difference in His eyes between weed and what the law allows to be prescribed! It's ignorant to think they're ok. But I'm Guilty! It seems unfair too. We didn't even ask to be here! But look at creation for heaven sakes! It has love written all over it! I'm so thankful that he willed me and all of y'all to be here too! But he is a righteous judge of men! And when he returns, it's not gonna be good! Daddy's upset with his mischievous children! And when he's mad people die! Which is why his coming is restrained! But the prophecies are being fulfilled, that lead to that great and terrible day! But YES, I BELIEVE! Yahovah's blessings

Jesus said that unless a man is born again he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. In order to be born again (and start the path of salvation) you must surrender your whole life to Jesus and *repent* from all sin. Jesus also said that if you don’t pick up your cross everyday you’re not worthy of Him, and that’s what we’re called to do! What a wonderful lecture. I learned viewpoints I've never even thought of. The only thing I might add; "We all fall short of the glory of God". Proclaiming you believe in God is, like he said, a very heavy statement to make. We're held at those standards and work towards them, but inherently we will never live up to them because we're human. That's where grace is so important. And you can't fully break down religion into logic because of faith. Inherently religion requires you to have faith because you'll never have any evidence that proves it. But going back to my original thought, what a wonderful talk.

After having listened to the entirety of this video clip, I'm struck with how fascile of a question, "do you believe in God?", Really is, and how much more it says about the questioner? The thoughtfulness with which Peterson answers or attempt to answer his reluctance with this question should totally shame his detractors who seize on this question as a weakness in his arguments. In my mind, both the curiosity and the implication that it is highly probable that Jordan Peterson is right now the best and most honest advocate for Christianity as a moral framework in the modern world, are astounding and compelling. I am truly at a loss as to whether this says more about the state of Christianity itself or the impressiveness of Jordan Peterson. I'll be pondering on this for quite a while.

It took a little while but I'm finally used to Jordan's style. It's simple, he thinks aloud. He doesn't always have pat answers. He doesn't make believe he knows if he doesn't. He has thoughts on these various subjects, and is constantly refining these thoughts. Right here he eviscerated himself to explain why he's not worthy to claim belief in God. To me it's obvious he does. He has such respect for his personal image of God, and what God's requirements are, moral behavior and such, that for him to create and hold such an image, the energy and thought he's put into it is evidence he believes. I have no problem saying I believe in God. It comes naturally. But after listening to Jordan speak on the subject, I believe in God still, but I'm questioning my commitment to God. So far in my life, God has fit my schedule. But I've lived simply and been lucky in many ways so that I've not had to go against my principles to get through a day, or week to survive. There is nothing I needed from the material world so bad that I've debased myself to get it. The most extreme example I can give of the condition of debasement is what an addict is capable of doing to get another hit of crack. But like I said, I'm lucky. And that luck, the good fortune to not get in a situation where I become so distorted in being that I offend my own principles comes from a general idea early in life that there is a God with requirements. So, God has requirements. If we look to religion to know what those requirements are we might find them colliding with our nature. In Islam killing infidels pleases God. I wouldn't kill someone for a trillion dollars. What I'm getting at is I have formulated my own idea of what God desires from me. Desires is a key word. I'm thinking out loud. My thoughts have wandered beyond my ability to maintain them. 'Desires' is a key word, but I can't explain why. I'll bury myself in nonsense if I try. I don't know what God desires of me. Hopefully it's simple, something like, 'Keep doing what you're doing.' That fits my schedule.

Mide Falegan made a comment 1 month ago that may help us here - he wrote: "Belief" modifies "Behavior". I take this to mean that "Faith" comes before "Works" (of faith). He who calls upon the name of the Most High must first of all believe that He exists. Hebrews 6 lays that out very nicely. But our desires, uncovenanted, separated and unanchored in, through, and to Him by our fall into sin through our first parents Adam and Eve, have set us adrift and put us at odds with embracing this much needed faith. Our hearts, adrift, are now deceitful, beyond all measure (Read Jeremiah 17:9). All sorts of desires lurk there now and lure us away from being re-anchored in the Living Logos. Read Matthew 15:15-20, James 1:5ff, and James 4:1-17. We are reunited, born again, and reentered into a new covenantal relationship with the Living Logos when, by His Word and Spirit, He comes along side us with His eternal truth, and that truth is this: that eternal life only exists in, with, and through Him, and apart from Him we can do no good (saving, enduring, pure) thing. This is because, apart from Him, our untethered desires, often cloaked and in disguise, lead us around by our noses to do their bidding. Hence the apostle Paul's soulful lament and cry, followed by the claim of victory in the grace of Christ Jesus (read Romans 7 and 8).

a better hope is "keep trying to do what you're doing" because we all fall short of the ideal. there's always room for betterment. as for schedules, belief shouldn't rely on any schedule. you LIVE a belief, at least hopefully you do, and not just mouth platitudes...so if you believe, you should act as if you believe, that's far more important to other people then just spouting "i believe"...because most peoples' belief does NOT reflect in their actions. if you claim to be christain and step over the homeless to get to church, then you're not a christain, you're a conformist.

@@god6927 @Carl Wheezer I received a notification for a reply that is NOT hear from you Carl. I don't why not but is not here. Even if you can see it. Here is what I got in the Email --- Carl Wheezer Ethelred Hardrede I’m sorry you’ve been told that you’re going to hell, if I had to guess the main two reasons evangelicals say that is due to either non-belief or homosexuality, and just know not all Christians think that, I REDACTED IN CASE THIS WAS THE REASON THE POST IS NOT HERE and have had my fair share of doubt, and it’s honestly sad to see my own people ruin such a fantastic idea for brotherhood and peace. But on your comment about that the Bible implicitly states that people are burning in hell you gotta remember that a lot of the Bible speaks in metaphors. Plus, there are verses and stories that state no one is burning but simply a prisoner. Look at the story of Jesus’s descent into hell, it’s stated that after Jesus died he immediately marched down to the gates of hell, and when he threw them open it’s stated that everyone from the Old Testament was there, but they weren’t burning but rather were in shackles awaiting judgement, until Jesus released them and as a group all of them marched up to Heaven. To add more upon the idea that no one is burning but awaiting judgement look at 2 Peter 2:4 “For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgement.” So the Bible actually says no one is burning but being held prisoner until Judgement day when Christ returns. As for the term Hell not being in the Bible, that’s true. The term I was referring to when I said Hell is Gehenna. But the Bible implies that only when Christ returns and a person’s name is not in the Book of Life will they be sent to Gehenna. ----- " if I had to guess the main two reasons evangelicals say that is due to either non-belief or homosexuality," For going reality and evidence. Which results in not believing. " just know not all Christians think that" In denial of the Bible at least in regards to non belief. "my fair share of doubt, " Well start going on evidence instead of an unwarranted belief. "But on your comment about that the Bible implicitly states that people are burning in hell you gotta remember that a lot of the Bible speaks in metaphors" When believers find it convenient clear statements that are not treated as metaphor in the Bible, become metaphors or allegories. Despite the parables being clearly labeled. "Plus, there are verses and stories that state no one is burning but simply a prisoner." The Bible has many contradictory claims. Not my doing. " Look at the story of Jesus’s descent into hell, it’s stated that after Jesus died he immediately marched down to the gates of hell," Where did you find that? Its not in the Bible. Just checked. Its not. Its a story made up much later. " To add more upon the idea that no one is burning but awaiting judgement look at 2 Peter 2:4 “" Are you aware that most Biblical scholars are pretty darn sure that Peter 2 was made up by someone else later? "So the Bible actually says no one is burning" It can interpreted otherwise. The Bible has many contradictions. The most parsimonious interpretation of the Bible is that was written by men. Many men, none of them with any special knowledge. Just like any other book. Ethelred Hardrede

If it were physical places yes. They are human conception of a state of being, war is hell, bad relationships that go on and on, can be hell, perfect health can be heaven, perfect peace also. What it really is. It is all Divine, animals, grass, water people trees sky. Omnipresence. It's now.

Reminds me of when someone said(can’t remember who), “There’s no one in Hell who doesn’t want to be there”

That’s why we are all sinners saved by grace, for we have all fallen short of the glory of God, but we have the right to believe because Jesus earned it

0:24 Personally, I don't like the question (partucularly when it is directed at me by people I don't really know) because I assume that the intent behind it is to pigeonhole me into group A or group B, one of which the person considers "friend" and the other of which the person considers "enemy". So when Peterson says "It's none of your damn business" I don't think of that answer as a cop-out. The privacy issue is justified to me because of the possibility that the question is being asked in bad faith.

i agree, people can choose to answer or not answer any question posed. there can be unforeseen consequences (good or bad) in any route. confidentiality is what any decent psychologist would practice in regards to themselves or others.

Does believing in God mean one has to be perfect; without fault? God teaches the opposite. To me, believing in God recognizes that we are imperfect and become humble enough to ask for His help.

I agree with much of what he said. I think though that you cannot leave out God’s grace, mercy, and forgiveness. I think instead of saying “I’m a believer”...we should say “I’m a work in progress”.

If you truly believe in God and what he says is truly ethical and correct, you have to implement those rules in your everyday life or you will be a hypocrite is what he says

Hey there :) Jesus said if you sin you are a slave to sin, but if the Son sets you free you shall be free indeed! Jesus nailed sin/addictions on the cross and we can be totally freed through His sacrifice and by the cleansing of His Holy Spirit !! Are you born again of the Holy Spirit? Jesus said that unless a man is born again he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. In order to be born again (and start the path of salvation) you must surrender your whole life to Jesus and repent from all sin. Jesus also said that if you don’t pick up your cross everyday you’re not worthy of Him, and that’s what we’re called to do! The Bible says that without holiness no one will see the Lord, we must stop practicing sin in order to truly build a relationship with God. Bless you! ☺️🙏🏻
