I was adopted in 1974 in El Salvador by two very wonderful Caucasian people and brought to the United States. From a very early age I was told that I was of Mayan decent. I recently took a DNA test, and it revealed that I am in fact 99.9% Mayan. I am ver proud of my ancestry, and want to learn as much as possible. In all of my 48 years alive, I’ve only met one other Mayan in my life.
@Little_tormenta
@Little_tormenta Год назад
Do you mind my asking what DNA test you did to reveal that? I am wanting to connect to my ancestral roots and have been looking for an extensive test that would break down what exactly I am. I just know most of my family are from Mexico and Texas when it was still Mexico. But one of my grandpas changed his whole identity when he came to the US so I can’t trace my ancestry with him

Most indigenous people in El Salvador are Nahua or Lenca, not Maya though. And of the ones that are Maya they speak Chorti or Pokomchi, not Yucatec Maya. That's a nice story though, good luck learning about your roots.
@alexh7146
@alexh7146 Год назад
@@connormurphy683 would you know if this is the same for Hondurans as well? Being nahua or lenca?
@connormurphy683
@connormurphy683 Год назад
@@alexh7146 Yes most Honduran indigenous would be Lenca. There are also small communities of Chorti Maya, nahua, Miskito, Sumu, and Tol/Jicaque. Depends on the region. I would guess that Maya and Tol would also be important in ancestry of mestizo Hondurans. Mayas only inhabited a small part of western Honduras but that did include Copan which was a big city by Mesoamerican standards.

Go to Yucatan in Mexico. You will meet a lot of Mayans there. Plus it's a beautiful area. For instance: stay in Playa del Carmen and travel to chichen itza and visit a Maya village

It's enlightening for us Americans to learn about languages like this. We tend to think Mexico = Spanish and only Spanish.

@@jorgeetalplease enlighten us Mexico to mayan/Aztec. Why do people that are Mexican say I am not Mexican, I am Mayan? It's like being a Mexican is a disease. If we are Mexican, aren't we a Aztec or Mayan but our heritage was stolen from us after the SPANISH (european) conquest?

the history of human inhabitance of the americas goes back thousands (sometimes ten + thousand) of years, but Spanish imperialism only made significant inroads onto the continent in the last 500 years. Think of the continent of Africa today, which, though still significantly shaped by European colonialism, is made up of hundreds of ethnic groups with their own languages, cultural practices and belief systems. The Americas are still like that today - a multiethnic and multi linguistic continent - but this largely exists beneath the surface of dominant Spanish/Euro culture that was imposed on the continent in the 1500s.

Thank you for making these videos... I really want to learn Maya as a third language. My first language is Spanish and my second language is English. My ancestors are Mayan and I would really like to learn our native language. I really enjoy learning about other cultures and their language. I am taking an anthropology class and it made me realize the importance of learning different languages. I am aiming to become a polyglot one day.

I am Filipino but I spent some time with the local Yucatán Mayan Villages in Mexico. It was the most amazing experience of my life. Both of our peoples came from indigenous tribes colonized by Spain. Most interestingly, I found that despite being half a world away, some Filipino dialects can translate into Yucatán Maya. The people there saw me as one of them and funnily enough, when I first met them and told them I was from a different country far from north and South America they just thought I was from the other village down the road from them. I shared with them my peoples’ culture and history and they shared with me theirs.

I've been trying to learn Maya atan. My great grandma was Yucatec Maya. My great great grandparents were from Merida. While talking to my family in Mexico, I've been motivated to learn Maya. My abuelita didn't teach my mom and tíos, also the fact that they all went to Catholic school. Now with my kids I am determined to learn and teach them to keep our family heritage alive.

Thank you so much, Jorge. I am blessed to have retired here from the US between Tulum and Coba. Many of my friends and workers here are Yucatec Mayan. Many are Mexicano. I speak enough Spanish to survive but I am much more interested in learning everything I can about Mayan history, culture, language, artifacts, art, greetings, farewells, or specific compliments. for me to learn and practice. Beliefs about health and healing are also fascinating to me as a retired nurse. I have been to Bolivia on a medical mission yrs ago and blessed to spend time among the Quechua Mayans. Please keep teaching as you are a natural and your deep respect and love for your heritage is beautiful! ❤
