It’s probably because of the light. When the audience can see eachother they become self aware, and won’t laugh very often, which generally reduces the “room temperature”. Really bad planning by the organizers.

Omg the tiny plane thing had me rolling. Was on a 12 seater with my family one vacation over the Grand Canyon and that sucker was scaryyyy. We all lost the color in our faces and were white-knuckled gripping the arms of the chairs. You could feel every gust of wind and it was terrifying! We still laugh about it to this day!
