Steve sounds so soulful and bluesy in the beginning of the song. This was also when he could sing so angelic to . I love Steve Perry then and I still love him in 2021. You are right Steve it's gonna be alright 💋💋 you are still the man 😘😘.
I love the harmonies and the shared songs that Steve and Gregg did together and I think they did too. They seem to enjoy singing together. Can't help but notice when Gregg is out front and he and Steve are sharing the microphone, just how little Steve is. Such a big voice coming out of that compact (but beautifully put together) person. He may be physcally on the small side but his stage presence and voice are ENORMOUS!!!
@@maryradloff3594 Steve is 5'7 not was .As of this day 8-11-2020. He is alive and I pray he will be for many more years to come. He still handsome and sounding good today.
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 does anybody know Greg's height? Googled it but it didnt say . I would guess about 5'11 or 6'ft. He has massive shoulders.
Steve clearly made Journey Great. You can hear the old style of Journeys playing in this song and others. Without Steve i dont think the original Journey would not of made it. That's why the current Journey is still around, because they still play Steves songs, he co-wrote with the other members, and found a copy cat who tries to sound like Steve. With Steve, Journey's sound changed - for the better. Great job Steve!
As I've read the comments, I get the same vibe as most. Gregg was not a good frontman, but Steve had a natural attraction and of course ability that surpassed all.
Gregg looked awkward and sounded even worse. It does look like they were having a great time though. I didn't know Rolie was such a huge guy, I felt scared if Rolie bumped Steve, he might hurt him.
Actually, ara572, Smith was a well established Jazz session player who was from what I heard, classically trained. Aynsley Dunbar was and is one of the all-time great session players as well. It's irrelevant which one someone thinks is better. They both made their contribution. If you check a lot of Jazz liner notes, you will find Smith there, and for a lot of big name, cross-genre artists.
I watched it that night!! That was the first time I ever laid eyes on him! I loved Gregg, too, but Perry was IT for me, and still is! I wonder if Gregg is still in the business, or did he retire?
Nope, I beg to differ my ftiend, JOHN BONHAM from Led Zeppelin was and still reigns supreme being!!! His son is as good as he was, but he still in his daddy's shadow, but daddy taught him very well. It was said that John Bonham had his son on the drums learning his craft at 5 year's old. Jimmy Page said, that they'd be practicing and he thought it was John Bonham playing whenever they were practicing. He said, I turned around and it was John's 5 year old son playing and never missing a beat. He also said, that he couldn't ever tell who was playjng unless he looked around because they played just like each other. That's a very AWESOME accolades coming from a LIVING LEGEND!!!!♊❤💋🎵🎼🎶
love the early journey Greg and Steve excellent together but this is from 1978, when Perry joined did the great Infinity album the great Dunsbar left in late1978 anyways love it ty
Infinity was released on Jan 20, 1978. I think this was in Chicago. I probably know someone that was there or knows who was for a fact. I intend to find out for certain. It would make sense to have an album to support. But everyone is right, Steve was a great front man. He talked about playing Chicago at the Aragon Ballroom (it's also mentioned in a Twilight Zone from the 1960s, where the guy had a radio that only got old broadcasts) and coming back at Soldier Field.
after the NEXT album, there was sooo much anticipation for the #4....then ..BAM what the fuck happened to the music that was light years ahead of it's time...STILL...thank you original 4
"Before Steve Perry joined Gregg was both Keyboardist & Lead Vocalist, but chose to become Keyboardist with occasional Lead Vocals from time to time, as being a Lead Vocalist is more."-📻🌐..
@tinkerbelle2630 Yeah our boy Greg filled out those pants WELL.He would have given a horse a run for his money. LOL !! But I agree, Greg's a cute guy, very talented but so not front man material.
@@corazonyee7717 after hearing and seeing this ,I have come to the realization That Rolie should keep hiding behind his piano. He sounds terrible, looks awkward and much older than Steve Perry.
Gregg didn’t want Steve in the band. Journey’s manager did, down deep I think Gregg new he up staged him. Not saying he didn’t have his own talent just didn’t match anywhere close to Steve as a vocalist.
@@akirasolo57 Well, they would have been a “ niche “ band. Not big - having their own small group of fans. Maybe that’s what they wanted. Maybe they didn’t want fame and fortune, because I would never have listened to the original 4. Gregg’s voice was awful. Neil basically wanted an instrumental band. They were all extremely talented musicians, without a doubt. But without a good lead vocalist, how big will your audience be?
@@akirasolo57 Well, Neil Schon had been in Santana. He basically wanted that type of sound. Interesting that he stayed when Steve Perry was hired by Journey’s manager Herbie Herbert ( and definitely not by Neil or Gregg - who were opposed to his joining the group ) And after Steve Perry left, Neil kept on with Journey and the songs that had made them famous, including the ones with Steve’s voice and songwriting. And stayed with Journey even to the point of hiring a perfect “ sound alike “ singer to Steve Perry’s voice. You may have preferred the original Journey of 4, but apparently Neil Schon did not mind sticking with an expanded group that brought him fame and fortune.
I was hoping that this song would be over soon. They were not as cohesively prepared until Steve was the only one singing as frontman. I must admit, this song had absolutely no rhythm to it, it had not yet became JOURNEY until after Greg Rolie stepoed away. I'm thinking there were some serious jealousies in the works, because Steve Perry is the very reason that JOURNEY, didn't fall through the cracks. Their label was on the verge of dropping them before Steve Perry came in there and history was being made baby. Steve Perry, I'm yours FOREVER, FAITHFULLY!!!♊❤💋🎵🎼🎶🎹🎻🎸🤘🎸✌🎹
Yeah, but I've heard Cain try to sing lead at Our Lady of Angels fire memorial (he was there, but not in any danger that I ever heard, big building) and if you didn't know he's a rock star, you sure wouldn't know by his voice as a lead. I wonder if they don't use Auto-tune on it, because it's bad. Also heard him on some religious show (it came up here) and it didn't get any better.
oh and how can one prove that? it is personal opinion, dude. Never said Steve Smith wasnt good, I just personally like Aynsley alot better. I think he had and has way more style
Better late than never, but you can ask a guy that's been playing 50+ years as a drummer. I did, guy I learned from. He said Aynsley was great in his day, but Smith took it further and is great now. I'm personally not into showing off and speed/flash. I'd go more for Phil Collins, Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) or Bernard Purdie. Jmo
Hearing Steve back then makes me sad since this is 40-some years ago...a few more years and they're going to start dying. I have photos from when they were a daytime band at Soldier Field... I wish the sound quality wasn't so awful.
Rolie was clumsy and cringy on stage but he's a good keyboard player-He just needs to stay behind the piano because he is embarrassing to watch out front
I was afraid for Steve's safety with Huge Gregg up there running around and kicking like a bull. He looked like he kicked right in Steve's direction at one point. Thankfully Steve didn't have to share the stage with him for too long, I sure at some point and time ,He would have knocked poor Steve clear off the stage with his clumsiness
I wouldnt listen to any of this if Steve Perry and his pretty self wasn't on the stage. Neal sounds good but not good enough without Steve Perry. Greg sounds awful and looks like he could be dangerous to Steve with his clumsy awkward antics on stage.
@@slamecatzwell5544 Lol - awkward is the word! Neil Shon is incredibly talented, but they were still going to be dropped by their label until Herbie Herbert insisted on having Steve Perry. Even Eric Clapton was in a band that became famous before he was famous on his own, and could pick and choose with whom he would play.
Gregg Rolie runs circles around Perry. (and I love Perry) Rolie is the parent and Perry is the child. Rolie's overall musicianship is in a different league than Perry.
You never would have heard of them without Steve. Just saying. I can sing. Rolie's voice is very limited. You might get barely an octave out if it on a good day. Perry's at least two full octaves. Probably more in his heyday. I go into that on my channel.
Rolie is no singer. Grew up in the Sixties - great singers. I couldn’t finish listening to this. Stick to your talent - keyboard, where you are awesome!
this comment about Greg "losing" to Steve is idiotic. Journey co-founders Greg & Neil HIRED Steve Perry, after hiring and firing another lead singer, Robert Fleischman. Clearly any real fan knows he was not competing with Perry for the lead vocals job.
@@seraidaserad8650 People do not seem to know that Greg and Neil did not want Steve Perry as their lead singer. Herbie Herbert signed him - whether they liked it or not. He was the group’s manager.
