I'm old enough to know his last name is cieque but he thought people would have a hard time remembering or pronouncing that so he abbreviates it as C.K.
@@matthewjamison having said that it's great hearing Louis talk for this long at once, he has been improving pretty damn steadily. I'm shocked by his earlier stuff, it's pretty fucking terrible when he was young haha
@@rockyevans1584 I know man. They say most stand-ups are dog shit for the first 5+ years. In Joe's case, 20+ years lol. I'd love to see his earlier stuff, just to cringe.
I was writing this same comment then I noticed yours. Rogan is a disgrace as an interviewer. Imagine giving a great answer like he did and find out he wasn't even fucking listening.
The reason why Louie is so good is because he works damn hard at it. Some folk think it just falls out of the sky and maybe one or two jokes do but most of it comes from hours of writing, hours of bombing and years of nervous exhaustion. The Beatles are the pinnacle of how hard work can payoff.
Yep and you can see it over time. You watch his early stuff and he wasnt very good. You see him on podcasts or talk shows and he's not that naturally funny. But his stand up had gotten better and better over time. He's figured it out. He is the best stand up comedian of all time in my opinion.
@@Boristheborat yeah I think CK is a comedic genius, along with Norm McDonald The most naturally funny comedians IMO are Patrice O'Neal, Dave Chappelle, and Bill Burr. It's obviously subjective and everybody has their own opinions but that's how I see it. Some comedians are just naturally hilarious out the gate like Chappelle, others like CK had to do a ton of work to figure out why they killed and why they bombed. In no order my top comedians are CK, Chappelle, O'Neal. McDonald, Carlin. Pryor. And Murphy. I'd like to include more but these guys are just a league above everybody else IMO.
Right.. Beatles killed themselves in the early days! 8 hour sets on speed in Germany.. things like that.. by the time Beatlemania hit.. they already put in so much work, gets overlooked bc of how big they got overnight once in the US
This is such powerful wisdom, so much bigger than just writing. You have to step outside your comfort zone in life and embrace the lessons from failure!
I saw Louis at the Hollywood Improv (must have been right before his HBO special), because he had his solid hour, there was no working on material that night. He absolutely killed, and I had tears of laughter and scream laughing. Best comedy show I've ever been to.
There’s a great TED Talk with Sir Ken Robinson “How Schools Kill Creativity” and in it he talks about kids and how even if they don’t know the answer, they’ll have a go at it. That as an adult, while you can’t be wrong all the time in your job, if you don’t sometimes risk being wrong, that nothing new would ever be discovered.
I've always wondered where Louis CK got his ideas from. I wonder if they're from the same place where Super Dave got his ideas. Which of course was in the meat section of Ralphs on Beverly Drive.
I've been asked about screenwriting (I wrote sketches in Philly and then wrote a few feature length screenplays) and some people would say, "I just don't want it to suck," so I'd say, "Of course it's going to suck, that's why it's called a first draft." I always say write for yourself, edit for your audience.
I bombed for literally 2-3 years without ever having a good set and now I’m getting 20-30 minute spots booked monthly sometimes bi weekly and I don’t think that’s too bad for a hobbyist- you gotta start by doing it all wrong haha but just keep doing it until you’re actually good at it. Youre going to suck really bad but it’s ok
Louis did Sorry which was him at his best, in the range of a lesser Carlin as far as taking it as far as possible. He is amongst of the last of honest comedians who dare be offensive.
Really? There's so many comedians who push the offensive button, just Louis does in a way where you feel he understand the suffering of a human being to be able to make fun of it. Have you seen Stewart Lee? UK's finest stand up comedian!
If you consider yourself some sort of artist you should watch that Beatles program Louis was talking about. You will see their genius but also a lot of play time and hard work.
In my experience as a standup the hardest part of this strategy is being willing to bomb in front of other comics. Because there's nothing comedians love more than talking shit about how so and so and this and that did badly the other night. But of course, once you start actually breaking through and making waves then they all suddenly fawn over you (or at least continue talking shit, but not to your face). So yeah, it takes guts but it's worth it.
The Chris Rock comment bothered me. None of these guys, including Rogan's circle of comic friends, would help a struggling comic develop a joke or set of jokes. They would all say, in one way or another, "Screw you. No one helped me. Figure it out or get out of the business". Comics don't help each other in that way unless they're paid to do so. Even then, the comic performing the written material loses respect because they had to rely on someone else's material. The only time it is acceptable to do this is for awards shows. Every host, comic or not, uses writers, and everyone wants Chris Rock or whomever to perform their joke at the Oscars.
I appreciate these stories, hearing only success stories as an open mic comic is hard, especially when you've been banned locally and don't have space to practice in.
@@BhoopeshBhola01 i made an off stage joke and gave out Official White Privilege Cards to comics of color and said shit like "If you get pulled over hand this over." Or "If you need a loan but don't have a cosigner, just give them this and tell them I sent you." The host there said I was handing out racist reading material and banned me, that same host does the hosting for all three local mics.
@@happybaals Man there are people like these in every Godamnnnnnn scene.I will be very honest,if you want to be the in the game. You gotta be willing to even shift to a new place to do your thing. If you trust your gut feeling,or you know you got love for this artform,do something or the other, who knows you might be the next one to make it big.
It really astounds me that early Louis stand up material from his 20s was mediocre at best, and today he is literally the funniest human being on the planet earth.
Thats what deciding to just keep grinding like the terminator gets you. You just keep getting better and better and eventually pass genetic freaks like Eddie Murphy. It happens in all vocations
Comedians always say that rule number 1 of comedy is to not play to the back of the room. I'm not a professional but I disagree with that. The real first rule, as Gilbert Gottfried taught me, is to not be afraid to bomb. Which is why he likely did the best telling of a joke in human history. It's too bad that we only have snippets of video and audio of it. If you're curious as to the joke just look up the documentary The Aristocrats.
Writing isn't easy, pros like Louie CK, work hard to pull jokes out of thin air, they pull and pull, constanting jerking jokes until it all comes together. He could even be in his apartment with guests over, when the urge strikes the man will just go to town writing comedy, pulling and pulling for the love of the game. Legend!
Never realized he smoked.. did he smoke in the Louie show!?? Really can't remember him smoking then either... cool that he likes talking about shit that I'm really into too.. Beatles... Kubrick.. great influences from my favorite things in life.. cinema and music
I have a bit about when I was on meth, I sound like a tweaker but you gotta remember I NEVER LEFT THAT PEEPHOLE, I didn’t miss anything. There’s more to it😂 that’s the base of it, my family hates it, I was calling them telling them the police were comin to get me, they were🤣🤣 I didn’t get bits a pieces from the peephole, I was glued to that mf for 3 days without sitting down, I could tell who was watching my motel room.
Everyone in Joe’s audiences go to see him once cuz of the podcast, or cuz their girlfriends bought them tickets for their birthday. Not because Joe is funny.
It's interesting that he says not everybody understands English in the European crowds. I mean why would you go the Louis CK show if you didn't understand what he's talking about?
lol. I guess he doesn't mean they have no clue what he is saying, but some subtleties. Also sometimes, you understand the word, but not the joke, because cultural issues. These can happen a little, yet overall still enjoy the show, still wanna get the ticket
It’s bc jokes rely really heavily on tonal expression and timing. And all comedy comes from a place of either irony or hyperbole (the contrasting of events or opinions against societal norms - or the exaggeration of events or opinions in contrast to societal norms). And irony and hyperbole are really hard to catch if English isn’t your first language because your conscious brain wants to translate the words literally. So the European crowds are probably a bit weird because some of the crowd are gonna have punchlines go over their heads or maybe miss some of the subtleties in the punchlines and it would throw off his rhythm for applause breaks and shit like that. I think that’s probably what he meant.
@@bennetcatchpole Yep, you are probably right. However I as a Hungarian would like to go to one is shows exactly because I watched all of his videos and (I think) I understand those subtleties that you're talking about. Maybe those shared Hungarian genes help a bit :). The point is, I wouldn't want to see him live if I didn't find him a genius based on his videos. Anyway, you get my point. Thanks for your answer.
The Beatles did DMT (or at least Paul did, so in a way Paul really did die), I know it's played out at this point but I feel like that would be on Joe's radar for good reason.
@@newusernamehere4772 Paul did DMT once but took LSD fewer than the other 3. He was actually the last one of them to take it. Almost a year after John and George had first taken it. Paul even decided to not take it the day Ringo first took it with John, George, Crosby, McGuinn and Peter Fonda. John took hundreds of trips as did George even though he stopped taking it forever after two years. John was still taking mushrooms and peyote in the when he was in his late 30’s, obviously before he was murdered after just turning 40.
Joe Rogan showing his lack of connectedness to the broader community but not knowing about the "Get Back" doco on the Beatles......JR you sit with some of the most informed individuals in current culture and you demonstrate time again that you're such a wanna be.
It sounds honorable, but what about the crowd. 20 minutes of great material and then just not using it because people would enjoy it too much? Imagine making a great meal and choosing to stop serving it because it's too good.
It's like a chef trying to create the perfect three course meal and nailing the starter and instead of trying out mains just keeps serving the starter because they know the diners will enjoy it.
I absolutely love this mentality! And, at the same time, this is why I don’t go see comedy live. I don’t want to pay money to watch someone I’m excited about … make material for some other crowd 6 months from now.
Hear that but you never know how the unpolished version might hit you - could still have a powerful impact. And I think it’s pretty cool to see a show that won’t ever be totally replicated. Just like seeing a band working out new songs on stage that haven’t been polished in the studio yet.
@@resoundingsource6595 yeah, I’d rather hear it when it’s done. That’s MY evening. My hard earned money. I’m not putting it up so a comedian can experiment with some material. I want the stuff they already know is good! I want to be at the taping of the comedy special being put on dvd. Not at the dozens and dozens and dozens of shows where they’re tightening up the material. I’m happy to let them do their thing. Eventually they record it and put it online. That’s when I’ll watch it. When it’s done. When it’s “right”.
