Very rare Priest recording from the 1977 "SIN AFTER SIN" Tour!!! SETLIST: Intro Let Us Prey/ Call For The Priest Victim Of Changes Diamonds And Rust The Ripper Sinner Genocide Starbreaker
Damn…opening with Let Us Prey/Call For The Priest. Just imaging seeing this opening band you know nothing about in 1977 and having them first hit you over the head with THAT.
@@ferrreira I said he played on the Sin after Sin album. Not that he became a member of Judas Priest and toured with them. I always knew that. Starbreaker is my favourite Judas Priest song from when I first heard it before a Peter Gabriel concert of all concerts. It's Phillips' drumming on that song. He created it. Read this comment carefully before you try to correct me again.
Judas Priest, Def Leppard and the Scorpions live in Boston. Judas Priest British Steele, Def Leppard On Through the Night and Scorpions Animal Magnatism........ran out an bought a guitar that following weekend. 3rd Row Balcony.......seems like yesterday. Just came off of Rush Hemisphers at the Orpheum a few weeks earlier.
It was about 130 degrees in The Orpheum that night...brutal...I must say that Exciter not being played was a bummer...but as I came to know Dave Holland's shortcomings I understood in hindsight :-)
It was DL Scorps and Nugent in St Louis. Judas played the superjam at Busch stadium that summer with Shooting star April Wine Journey and Hagar .Would have rather seen your show with Judas inside instead of Ted
Even though 86 Turbo was not best era, Priest were very memorable they did bring so many hot chicks If I have a choice I would go to Fuel For Life Tour.
Halford sang this quality all the way through the 80,s too. Every tour! Impecable! But after Ram It Down I noticed his vocals slowly starting to change. I know, because I saw every tour live. From Screaming - Painkiller.
seeing zeppelin must have been nice. i was 13 in 1977 my first concert was kiss.i have seen about 200 concerts, but u can't see them all when your young. i bought unleashed in the east in the used bin at my local record shop, that was the first priest album i bought. then sin after sin and stained class right after. i saw ozzy in 1981, der leppard opened up! saw metallica in 1983 at a small club with 100 people there, raven opened up. those days will never be back. i saw almost everyone. 80s!!!
@@markbiedermann7467 Your a lucky guy, if i had a older cousin maybe i could have seen a few shows i was to young to see, but i didn't, oh well, i made up for it.
🎸💁♀️💖WOW! No wonder why Judas Priest has always been my favorite band ever since that day a friend played a cassette for me. I said “I LOVE THAT! WHO IS THAT?” He said “JUDAS PRIEST! I then moved to cities closest to my mountain town to find other musicians who played what I craved to play. After a few yrs of hard work, I earned a recording contract but let it go to take care of Grandma. Now I’m still in the mountains of PA doing solo gigs. 🤩Thx for posting this! I’d never heard this concert!
That's right... first tour. We caught this at the Palladium in nyc. A friend heard they were opening for Starz/REO, but we had no way to confirm that and took the gamble... it paid off big. Les on skins that night, as he was the following year there - Exciter opening that second show. Year after that. ... Holland would be there drumming - Delivering The Goods opening. .. We saw Dave's debut just prior at JB Scotts in Albany. ... A friggin bar. Attendance that night... 10 of us at a table against the stage and a few locals at the bar.
Wow! I lived in San Antonio from 77 til 82 but I missed this show and the Staned Class tour. Finally saw JP on the Hellbent tour when they opened for UFO. 70's Priest is the best! And thanks to the Godfather Joe Anthony for all the great music!
I would've left after Priest walked off the stage. I had plans to go to the ill fated Ozzy show at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando. they were the band playing before Foreigner who was the headliner, so I was going to see Ozzy and Randy and leave after they played. unfortunately I didn't get to see them.
What a gem for any Priest or heavy metal fan...too bad Glenn's distortion kept cutting out but even so, this is getting saved in a playlist. Thanks for posting.
+Romulan Rancorthat may be true, but heavy metal was'nt a term yet when sabbath's first album came out. judas priest was the first true metal band;but i do agree that maybe sad wings was before SAS i just think SAS is heavier, actually rock a rolla was first;but they were kind of experimenting musically then;but yes, black sabbath birthed heavy metal.
kennatiousc SAS was quite a diverse album really, but the heavier moments on SAS were probably heavier than that of SWOD. You've got songs like Dissident Aggressor and songs like Last Rose Of Summer. It's a great album.
They opened a tour with UFO a block from my house in late winter or spring 1978. At the YVC gymn in Yakima, WA, we were priveleged to witness a shift in Heavy music and over the top bombastic performance. It was loud enough for the Seattle Colliseum and tight enough for a local bar! KK Downing came out looking like Elric of Melnibone (an albino fantasy character). He was throwing his flying V into the air and making noises we hadn't heard before. The band just rocked. We were so wrung out we could not even appreciate a great UFO set fully. I had barely ever heard of either band at the time but have loved them both ever since!
+Michael Maxwell I saw the same "Hell bent for Leather" tour here in Boise Idaho and when KK threw his axe 20 feet in the air and spun around to catch it, he missed and it splintered-out as it hit the stage. It was so awesome to see that happen. I was only 14 yrs old at the time, and all these years later it's still one of my favorite concerts. UFO had those white lights in front of the stage shining up as they played "Light's Out"! I was sooo' high that night, but I remember it like it was yesterday! We were so lucky to experience that period in rock, because we will never see so many great bands live like that again for only $7.00!
2Zero8discipline Great to hear of your experience a day or two earlier. I was 14 also, maybe 15. I smuggled a bong in and everybody wanted to share with me that night. I had barely started to pick up a bass guitar but that night made me and my best friend life long metal players!
I've just finished listening up to the end of Victim of Changes. After Call For the Priest and THIS, I can already safely say this is the best fucking Priest live recording I have ever heard ever. God damn. Rob was at his very best!!
I still have a spot in my heart for the "Screaming in Memphis" concert which was from the *Screaming for Vengeance* tour, that was released on Media Home Video. Bought my copy for $2 at a pawn shop... Got my money's worth...
They all sound great!Especially Rob.Playing the songs at the right tempo and not way too fast! Guitar tones sound excellent. I saw them in '79 while Les Binks was still with them and I thought they were great, but this recording sounds even better.
This is awesome!!!!!!!!! Thank you Joe Anthony (and Lou Roney) of KMAC AM (and later KISS FM) for introducing San Antonio to real rock music back in the early mid-70's!! NO City in the USA rocked like S.A. during the 70's and 80's, thanks to "The Godfather".
Rene Lagunas Cool. I lived in S.A. from 83-90. Remember KISS FM well. I graduated from Madison H.S. in 85, and went to John Wood middle school. Not in that order.Lol What school did you attend?
Try having your mother uproot you and your sister from the El Paso area, and being able to listen to an FM Radio station playing Hard Rock and moving to Schulemburg Tx, in 1972-'73 . Joe Anthony and Lou Roney saved me (at 15) from 'Hicksville'. I have NEVER FORGOTTEN the musical education in Hard Rock and Metal that the Godfather and KMAC-AM Radio brought to my life (and when we moved to Corpus Christi in '75, the concerts. Joe Anthony's love for Rock benefited Corpus, too!)
Thanks Rock 'n Metal Concerts. we all appreciate it. RIGHT ? RIGHT !!!!!!!!! I saw Priest in Nov. 2014 in Glendale Az. and they did 4 encores and Rob said the Priest Will Be Back
One of the golden years! Wish I could travel back in time to witness this! Rob’s range in pitch is just insane. The widest range in the world though?? I wouldn’t be surprised
This concert was the 1st time I heard them..was completing AIT in San Antonio at the time...damn a long time ago..I was a instant fan & love Priest to this day!
It's true. Priest was a last minute addition to a Bill Graham Day on the Green concert in Oakland headlined by Zeppelin and also featuring Rick Derringer. Priest replaced the disbanded UFO. Famously, John Bonham and Zep's manager Peter Grant got into a fight with Bill Graham's people and charges were filed. Zeppelin never played America again, When Plant heard UFO wasn't going to play, he told Graham to go get those Brummies (Priest).
doesn't get better than this. This is one of the few live shows even available from the Sin after Sin tour! I'm almost tempted to attempt my skills to remaster the audio!
My ticket for the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park, NJ 1979 was $7.00... AWEOME show. Hell Bent for Leather... They played with Twisted Sister a local act at thew time we used to see them every Thursday at the Fountain Casino in NJ...
Scorpions did matched and surpassed them in those yrs, compare the set lists at the time no fanatism. Judas Priest is my favorite metal band Scorpions are my fav band , both were really heavy at the time
Still have my Sin After Sin - nothing touched this (short) LP...except Sad Wings of Destiny I suppose. This was the sonic transition from a space-metal thing to hell bent for leather. More plexi than the JCM to come...see KK's metal panel stacks ? and..what a Voice.
This was amazing. I wish I were there too. You folks have impressive memories. I have to say that this version of Victim Of Changes has to be the closest to the album version that I've ever heard them play live. It's one of my favorites by them, but in later years they always seemed to play it faster almost like they had to rush through it or something. This version was life changing for me!
YEAH!! The "British Steel" tour was my first concert, too! Def Leppard "on through the night" and Scorpions "animal magnetism" rounded out the bill...SICK SHOW...remember it like yesterday!
Was at the 1983 US Festival too in San Bernadino, Cali. Glen Helen Park over 500,000 people those tix were only $20.00 a day for dozens of killer bands including Priest, Bowie, VH, Scorps, too many to mention. I still have my stubs for that. All 3 daze, the best trip of my life still. I lived in Miami at the time.
From about 76 - 79 (Sin after Sin, Stained Class) Priest had such a great, great sound. With all due respect to the Dave Holland years, this stuff was much better in my opinion. And there are many who just don't know THIS Judas Priest. Can't help but wonder how the band would've fared had Les Binks stayed on.
RockaRollaSadWingsSinner Top3 First 3 done. We all know it... Stain Class and Hell Bent for Leather were fucking right also ... Then the Cash on Sell out for money happened to all the Bands or most of them. Thanks for the early stuff in the 70's we didn't have to listen to the crap they tried to deliver to radio. Haha
Nah quite the contrary, there's a shitload of fans who feel the same, I myself included, and in all fairness, the last great Priest album was British Steel, but even then it don't come close to their 70's material.
It was at the Municipal, I was there. Very unusual look and style. Tipton had a Marshall blow, lost his temper backstage. Kicked over a bunch of chairs. Next time was Joe Freeman, I recorded it. Wanted this one more, pre-Exciter.......THANK YOU
Yeah, they looked like a low rent version of Queen with that look, geez Tipton lost it, yikes sounds like a guy I wouldn't wanna be around, still one of my favorite guitarists though.
All thanks to THE GODFATHER JOE ANTHONY!,I was all the shows @ Municipal Auditorium! This is the greatest thing about being in the. 70's. We could do many ,,things& getaway with it \m/
Kat Toudouze-I just found this video and posted the comment that I WONDERED if The Godfather brought them. I knew that I first saw Judas Priest in Corpus Christi around 76-'77(at 62, I remember the bands that I saw, but not the exact year for the concert). Thanks for confirming about Joe Anthony's influence. KMAC-AM Radio, with Joe and Lou Roney, was THE greatest thing I ever heard on AM radio!
12:07 здесь Роб поёт просто космически! Низкий баритон очень ему идёт, надо было в студийной версии Жертвы Перемен в таком стиле петь эту часть песни! Было бы очень мощно!
I am SO happy with this post. I saw Judas Priest in Corpus Christi at least twice and 1977 has to be the first time. Corpus Christi benefited from the groups that came to San Antonio and made the trip to Corpus. Joe'The Godfather'Anthony was responsible for putting South Texas on the Hard Rock and Metal highway Thanks for posting this. I remember all the groups that I saw, but didn't keep all the ticket stubs and am always trying to figure out the EXACT year. At 62, the best years of my life, musically,(1970's)blur on exactly what year I saw a certain group(and 1975-1980 had alot of tours going). Some I can nail, but dated videos like this one are great.
Thank you metalinvader888!! It's a blast from the past to hear Joe Anthony, the DJ at 99.5 KISS, introducing the band at the San Antonio Convention Center Arena. Once I called him at the station and requested him to play anything off side 2 of Sin after Sin - He ended up playing the whole thing!
I think back then in US discovering Judas Priest was like discovering extreme metal haha There's another live where they play dissident agressor haha .. Imagine
I saw day 2 of Day On the Green ....JUDAS PRIEST ....DERRINGER and LED ZEPPELIN! Unbelievable! Judas Priest hooked me right away seeing as Halford could scream like Ian Gillan in his normal singing voice and Two roaring guitars with pounding bass and drums! What a show!
By the cymballs sound i think is Simon Phillips, one of his few shows... Analising the Sin After Sin songs arrangments... Les Binks changed it a little.
According to Downing's autobiography, Binks quit over a money dispute with the label. He wanted to get paid, they were like, "You're just the drummer," and he fucked off and left the band hanging just before the tour promoting Unleashed in the East.
Yeah, thanks for that man. I live in San Antonio and I couldn't think of any open air stadiums in SA back then... answered a question of mine, so thanks.
Anyone know if any of these old Judas Priest shows ('77, '78, or even earlier) have ever had soundboard renditions released, either officially or as boots? I SO appreciate the posting of this and am simply curious if some higher quality versions are available.
Look at this line up lists, note the the 2nd acts! Holy Shit. www.stonecityattractions.com/rockplanet/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=71&Itemid=71
Serge Blake Too bad there aren't many full setlist live recordings from this era. Stained Class (their masterpiece) unjustly falls into the same category as Turbo, Ram it Down, and the Owens albums as one of the most ignored releases during live shows. For christ sake their first live album "Unleashed in The East" only features one fucking song from it and it was their second most recent album they had out at the time. Hell it was only roughly a year old at the time Unleashed came out and already 99% of the songs off it had been shelved from live shows.
Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple and ....Judas Priest. What do they have in common? They're my favorites, all of them performing best live in concert.
That picture was taken at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Saturday , July 9th., 1977 from SuperJam '77 . The lineup was co-headlined by REO Speedwagon & Ted Nugent , Head East , Gypsy, Judas Priest opened the festivities . Attendance was 45,000 .
