As you stated, "This man is NOT lacking intelligence." That's exactly why he should have taken himself straight to the "libarry!" He absolutely has the wherewithal or capacity to do that simple task. Especially if he can travel, alone, through multiple counties to visit someone in a hospital. It's a disservice for people to make excuses for him in that regard, so the judge was on point in her decision, imho.

Sooooo many older attorneys in these courtrooms. You can quickly pick out the ones that should retire. I mean, if you're in your 70s, f'ing retire. You may have to work because of poor life choices, but don't hold a job where someone's freedom is on the line. Go be a law professor or practice some other form of law like probate, estate planning, or whatever. A burned out criminal defense attorney is at best, useless, and at worst enables miscarriages of justice that will echo for generations in many people's lives.
