Welcome to my food tour in Juifen, Taiwan! We drove down from Taipei to Juifen and toured this Spirited Away Town for the day. We arrived early enough around 10 am where there weren't huge crowds of tourists yet. But it got extremely busy starting lunchtime.
I ate tons of snacks and definitely started looking like the taro ball I ate. I started off with a classic Taiwanese rice sausage. It's basically a hot dog bun made of rice wrapped around a Taiwanese sausage. Next, I took a few bites out of a mochi ball containing savory pork and potato filling. It was a good start to the morning. Next up, I ate fried king oyster mushrooms with plum powder! I'd got to say that this was one of the top snacks I ate that day. The plum powder really gave it a light sweet tang to cut the grease.
The main attraction of this day was Amei Teahouse. We walked in without a reservation and surprisingly got a table on the balcony's corner with a fantastic ocean view. The waitress came by to show us how to make oolong tea traditionally and left us to it to make the rest of our humongous batch of tea. We didn't finish and even took a baggy of tea home. I really enjoyed this experience and would highly recommend stopping here to even take a light break + enjoy high-quality tea.
After the tea break, I headed over to a taro ball stand, which really reminded me of Meet Fresh. Maybe it's because they're similar presentations with a few assorted beans in there over ice. And lastly, my ultimate favorite stop was at a Taiwanese meatball shop. I loved the chewy texture and BBQ pork inside. It was delicious!
