Hitting is ridiculously hard because it’s not enough to just hack at the ball and make contact You have to make the right KIND of contact, you have to launch the ball at a good angle with the right amount of exit velocity to actually get hits/not groundout or pop up/fly out

@@sneersh9107 its why pitchers have to be 100% careful with every move they make on the mound so they don't tip their pitches because hitters, especially Soto, are always looking for tells on what pitch is coming by examining the pitcher the entire game.

Urías absolutely dropped dick to close out the Braves in Game 7 of the 2020 NLCS as well. I believe he was perfect in the multi inning saves to close out both series.

It's hard to consistently hit your spot if you change your mechanics too much.

Sometimes it's not just arm angle, you can also sometimes read what a pitch might be just by how open/closed their glove looks when they're getting set. Strasburg was tipping pitches that way when they were on their World Series run a few years back.

I feel like it’d be very noticeable as a batter getting different arm angle releases. Because it’s not only changing where he releases the ball but the angle the ball is traveling. As a batter tracking the ball from release to the plate your going to notice 2 completely different angles. Not taking away from them being pros they’re great.

it's their job. i bet you could recognize arm angles and stuff after a week of professional batting practice where you have all sorts of data and analytics on opposing pitchers. your reaction speed would be the limiting factor, not your eyesight.

Gotta respect Urias' skill. A lot of pitchers can't change arm angle at will like that without the rest of their mechanics going to hell. They're lucky enough if they don't hurt themselves, never mind throwing a strike. Pitching is probably the toughest part of baseball. Hats off to Urias for putting on a clinic here.

Baseball is “boring” in the same way that chess is “boring.” The most interesting parts of the game aren’t obvious to the casual observer; you have to have some knowledge before you can truly appreciate it.

He's right, but that's also *why* teams stress keeping the consistent arm slot. Very few pitchers are capable of throwing more than three good pitches, so it comes down to whether or not you want your guys to focus really hard on being able to repeat the three good pitches they have really well, or throw more pitches less well. I think 100% of pitching coaches in the major and minor leagues would prefer to have their guys focus on quality over quantity in their repertoires, but there will always be some freaks for whom the normal rules don't apply.
