Join me for a cosy video where I share what I've gotten up to this month with my knitting, sewing, natural dyeing and allotment.
My natural dye garden and allotment have been loving the mix of rain and warm sun this month, and I've been making the most of it by dyeing up a new 100% wool yarn base. I've also finished my Bifurca Vest, a skirt, a quick summer dress, and our Francli Daypacks! It's been lovely seeing projects come together 𖤓
I hope you enjoy it!

Hello. Really enjoyed this month’s video. We’re on holiday in France but cut and dried or froze lots of plants before we left for dyeing. Have today found some 100% wool yarn grown in this area and naturally dyed with local plants. Might buy some to make a bifurca vest as yours is so lovely. Best wishes, Laura

Ooh you have some lovely projects planned!! Yes it does frustrate me about narrow size ranges- the whole point of making clothes is to give you freedom and have things that feel great and fit to whatever bodily quirks we all have :) if you ever do fancy a retreat we had a couple who flew in last time and made a longer Cotswold holiday out of it 🥰

What a lovely selection of really successful finished projects! As you were talking, a couple of recommendations came to mind. First, your briar shawl and hedgerow chat made me wonder if you have encountered the music of Sam Lee? He’s an amazing folksinger and nature lover and on his recent album there’s a song called Bushes and Briars that you might enjoy. Second, have you watched the (wonderful) Green Bean podcast before? Katie is having to take a break at the moment but they made a swimsuit recently and suggested some interesting patterns, including for gymnastics leotards that can be made as swimwear with a wider range of shapes to choose from. And lastly, I was just looking at the Pelica vest recently and deciding that I’d like to make it soon too. I might decide to spin some yarn especially for it which will delay my casting on somewhat, but I think it could be a really useful garment.
@threadandyarn

Thank you so much for the recommendations, I'm really looking forward to watching the podcast. I hadn't listened to Sam Lee, but his music is right up my street - the bushes and briars song is perfect. I just finished dyeing my yarn for the Pelica - I think it'll be so useful, like you say. Beautiful that you're considering spinning yours, I'd love to learn to spin. I'm sure it'll be absolutely worth it when you've finished!

Also love the more rustic yarns. May I ask where you generally purchase your knitting wool? Being in Cheltenham, there is sadly not too much to choose from. Hope I am not intruding and really enjoying your channel! S.
@threadandyarn
@threadandyarn 18 дней назад
Hello Susan, not at all ☺️ I'm using a lot of my own wool at the moment which is spun in Yorkshire and Cornwall that I dye here, but when I buy there are a few places I like to go. I visit friends in London a couple of times a year, so sometimes I will treat myself to something from Loop London or Beautiful Knitters. I also find things in charity shops in Stroud, or at In Stitches Haberdashery. I was lucky enough to buy some very good quality yarn from a destash that will keep me going for a while, but I have been meaning to visit String in Cheltenham - have you been before?
@susanvanzyl4007
@susanvanzyl4007 18 дней назад
Oh my, how generous of you to share such useful information, many thanks! Yes, String is now much more accessible, being in town. I really need to get to Stroud for a good look around, I wish you had an ‘outlet’ there, but can fully understand the benefits of an online platform. I am also ‘surviving’ on lovely bits that I have salvaged and saved over years…to be honest there is only so much of stripes and fair isle you can stomach before yearning for a good old cabled, hard core, rustic jumper 😂😂. Hoping I haven’t bored you to tears, and thank you again, Sue.

Natural dying, love your colors. So you used walnut leaves? How did you get your green? Did you do indigo over something else?Yay on the skirt tutorial! Thanks!I. I had a number of people over for a natural dye day, and we had lots of fun: madder, logwood, osage orange (a local tree) and cochineal. Some fun colors. Love your videos, thank you!

I’m really loving your videos! Thank you for sharing all your makes with us! I see and knit as well. You share many different small pattern companies that I am not aware of and I like what I’m seeing. I am aware of some indie designers but as I see, there are many more. Is there one place on the internet to see everything that’s out there? How do you come across all these cute sewing pattern? Thanks!!! 😊
@threadandyarn
@threadandyarn 2 месяца назад
Thanks so much ☺️ I think I find most patterns on Instagram. It can be hard to know what to look for at first, but it's a good place to see what other makers are trying out, and gives you ideas to start researching. There are some pattern companies that I often go back to, but I have mostly just built up a little library over time. I love patterns by Merchant and Mills, Friday Pattern Company, Anna Allen, Paper Theory, and I'm sure lots more :) an app is currently in testing called Threadloop, which aims to be a pattern library where people can share reviews, thoughts and makes- I think it'll be really useful!

I wonna knit something from Tati as well - the construction is so unusually and fun but is it difficult with all the colorwork (never done)?
@threadandyarn
@threadandyarn 2 месяца назад
It is a very unusual construction! I think it worked really well though. I have done a good amount of colourwork, but I don't think this was particularly challenging - I tend to catch my floats if I'm knitting in one colour for more than 5/6 stitches, which I think makes it more manageable. I'd have a look at how to do that if it's not something you're familiar with ☺️
