Thank you so much. I'm downsizing and was seriously considering passing my jewellery supplies on to another crafter. I'm more into paint & clay, plus I've only taken 2 casual lessons in jewellery years ago which didn't go much into the basics. Having watched several of your videos I feel motivated to create with beads & wire and, most importantly, better skills based on your videos.
Thank you for the information on how to open and close the jump rings❤I know now why some of my old rings didn’t work too well! I didn’t know how to do them properly!😻
@@jacquelinelowe4439 Yes - I find any music, especially fast music beats very distracting when I am trying to concentrate to learn a new skill or understand concepts being presented
Hi Carol.❤ I just watched your video on jump rings. Needless to say, I was doing it all wrong. No wonder I was struggling so much! It was taking an inordinate amount of time for me to attach a couple of jump rings! I still need to practice. Thankfully, I understand how it’s done now. I hope this becomes easier now that you’ve shown me how to do this. I’ll probably watch the video again. Thank you so much, Carol!💐
Thanks so much for the explanation and all of your videos / tutorials Is there a video to make the necklace / earrings you are wearing in this video ??
Thank you so much, Joni. The necklace is a vintage one of my mothers. I recreated it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JDxEW1Y6Fyg.html The earrings are part of the 5 minute series. You can see those here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c6wJXAXzh-w.html I usually put the links to the jewellery I'm wearing in the description box below the video.
Hi Jaima, yes, most jump rings do stay closed as long as they are appropriate size/weight for the project. For example, if you have a lot of heavy beads, you would choose a heavier weight jump ring. If you're really unsure, you can also use two jump rings together and make that a design feature. The only time I've ever had jump rings fail on me is when they haven't been properly closed.
Hi Donna, thank you for your question. It really depends on the gauge of the wire that the chain and jump rings are made of. You will need to measure the gap in the centre of the link and then work out what gauge wire will fit through. As I don't know what gauge the chain is, I can't tell you how large the hole in the centre of the link is and therefore can't tell you what gauge jump ring you will need. You might find this chart useful to work out the gauge. rings-things.com/blog/wire-jewelry-101. I hope that helps.
Hi Joanne, did you mean the most common gauge of jump ring? It's hard to say as different gauges are used fro different things. I would say probably a 20-22 gauge is most common, but that also depends on the size as smaller jump rings often use a smaller size wire. I hope that helps.
I have learned to not trust jumprings to remain closed, from my experience wearing jewelry with them in the make up. I'm I terest3d in the hearing or feeling the ring closed. Is there any way to secure it closed, glue or soldering?
Hi Wendy, I used to feel the same way, and have the same problem. There are two reasons that jump rings fail - the first is that the jump ring isn't closed properly and the second is that the gauge of wire used for the jump ring is too light. Often when you close the jump ring, you can feel it close correctly as it kind of pops into place with a bit of a grating feel. I hope that makes sense. If you hold the jump ring up to the light and look at it from all angles, you shouldn't be able to see any light through the gap. Long ago I switched to a heavier gauge of jump ring. The gauge depends on the size - for example, a 10mm jump ring in a smaller gauge wire is less sturdy than a 6mm jump ring in the same gauge wire. Therefore, the larger the jump ring, the heavier gauge you should choose. You can purchase already soldered jump rings, or you could solder them yourself if you are still unsure. I hope that helps. I talk about closing jump rings in all the videos where I used them so hopefully, if you watch more, you can get to the bottom of the problem. Let me know how you go and if there's anything else I can do to help. You can always email me at carol@affordablejewellerysupplies.co.nz if you need specific help.
@@The_Stylish_Maker thank you for the reply. I'll look into heavier Guage, I'm brand spankin' new to this and only because I "inherited" my stash from a family move!!!
Keep at it - it takes time to learn and lots of practice. It took me literally years to make a good loop and even now, they don't always turn out how I want. Same thing with jump rings. Let me know how it goes.
Thank you. Sorry you don't like the music. This is a very old video and I like to think I've perfected my video making skills so maybe check out a newer one.
I really wanted to watch your video and it seemed like you were going to have a lot of good information, but the music was incredibly annoying and far too loud! Too much for me! I had to bail out before I got half way thru.
Thank you for the feedback, Shelley. We live and learn and I've made sure the music is lower now. I hope this doesn't put you off watching other tutorials of mine.
