Don't take mushrooms before you fly. That seems to be the lesson of the fire handle bandit on Alaska Horizon Air flight 2059, who pulled both fire handles in an attempt to shut down both engines, and then attempted to open a cabin door after he had been removed from the cockpit.

I think the fact that he’d have been at the controls of a large commercial aircraft in just days, hours (?) is even scarier than his antics from the jump seat. Maybe this was a cry for help that came just in time, because nobody ended up getting killed. That said, your insight and narration style are like nothing else aviation-wise on the platform! Never found anything so good with such a low sub count on RU-vid before. Simply excellent stuff, every post!

I flew with Joe a lot from around 2007-2012, and yes the hat in that photo is a Horizon Air First Officer hat (the Captain hats were different). First of all I didn’t even believe the first news reports because Joe is a great person, heck I love the guy. I would be more than willing to be a character witness for him during this dark time in his life. The news is absolutely shocking to me, hard to deal with. If the stories we are reading are true, I hope people can understand that what happened on that flight is something Joe would absolutely never do in his right mind.

If you read his statements, I'm inclined to believe what you're saying is true. Lack of sleep for 40 hours is enough to drive anyone mad

Do what you can to let him know how you feel, I’m sure he could use your help right now. This must be a nightmare for him and his family.

Everything your saying drifts with what I’ve read about him. Severe lack of sleep combined with psychedelics with maybe some depression. I feel for him and his family.

@@flyingformoney777 I don’t think he was on psychedelics during the flight. It doesn’t present that way. I think he had done them previously but well prior to the flight. He said two days prior. He was going through a rough time.

Depression is bad enough, add a job loss, legal problems and a likely end of career. I feel bad for this guy and his family. I hope he gets his life back together.

@@melxdan It’s a mental health issue. No motive. Plus, he’s a good looking, heterosexual, white male with a wife and two kids. Murder charges won’t stick. However, his life is going to suck for a long time.

Depression is off limits for discussion if you want to keep your medical certificate and your job. Self medication is a tempting option. The industry has made great strides in dealing with alcohol abuse, perhaps we’re ready to tackle depression.

I saw pictures of him from the past, and in my own opinion, he looked strange, just off, like a few screws loose.

I think 83 counts of attempted murder is a stretch, at least from the attempted pulling of the fire handles. Trying to open a door might be worse, but neither event would cause the plane to crash with any certainty. The plane was at 31,000 feet when the incident occurred. Surely, the pilots would have been able to restart the engines had he been successful in shutting them down. And even if they weren't able to, you'd think they could have glided to a safe landing at a nearby airport. He might have scared a few passengers to death, but there's no way what he did would have killed them all. It'll be interesting to see why he was so depressed. His house payment would be depressing enough. Perhaps there's another woman in his life.

My grain of salt, being a trained pilot himself, if he would really wanted to crash the airplane, he would have pulled those levers at Vr.

Do we have any information about the amount of psilocybin he ingested ? It is scientifically proven that micro-dosing can alleviate chronic pain and depression without any hallucinations. The fact that he was up for 40 hours is more alarming. Could mean he was on some other substances/medication that prevented him from sleeping. Lack of sleep can cause hallucinations, not only mushrooms.

My niece died on Alaska 261, due to lack of greasing the jackscrews. Alaska Air was trying to save money at the time. IMO her and everyone was murdered. Uncontrollable dive, then flying inverted for many minutes, then plunging into the Pacific Ocean.

Why ban jump seats when active cockpit crew members themselves have intentionally caused more suicide-by-pilot crashes?
