Yeah, sorry but they still pay student finance abroad. If the government paid for there education, they should stay, but the government don't. The government charge them upwards of £80,000 which they end up paying, whether they go abroad or not. The government even adds on a high interest rate onto it, higher than that of a mortgage for profit. At least if they go abroad, they can earn enough to buy a house.

@@El.Cid17 Look again. Doctors salaries in the UK average £50,000. After tax and NI, that's about £30000. Not exactly thriving, but not to bad. But then they've also got additional expenses such as memberships to medical organisations (mandatory for doctors) which leaves them with about £27,000. If your living in London, it quickly becomes apparent the issue. And the UK housing market is terrible. Try getting a house on £27000 a year. After food and expenses, you'd be lucky to save £5000 a year. In New York, the average doctors salary is $350,000. After tax, there's still $275,000 left to play with. Try saving for a million dollar house on that. You could buy one outright in 4 or 5 years. The point is, the salaries we pay are funny compared with the rest of the world, and our housing prices are obscene compared with everywhere else.

@@thesupremepizza6893 in the USA they have to fund their own education and training.
@thesupremepizza6893
@thesupremepizza6893 Год назад
@@taffyterrier When you account for the total student loans in the UK, plus interest, the average doctor pays £160,000 in total. So, not much difference between US fees and the UK fee's in the long run. The UK's higher interest really builds up. The difference is that in cities in the US like New York, there paid on average $350,000 vs only £50,000 in the UK on average. How do you get a house in the UK today on that? Doctors are better off leaving to the US, or any other country for that matter where they could afford housing.
@thesupremepizza6893
@thesupremepizza6893 Год назад
@@taffyterrier If the UK wanted to retain them, they have two options. Increase salaries in line with the US. That would mean a 300% pay rise across the country, and a 700% pay rise for London which definitely isn't affordable. After you factor in the much higher taxes over here, even that isn't enough to match salaries with the US. Option two is student loan forgiveness. In exchange for serving the NHS on a much, much lower salary for several years, student loan is knocked down. This would be more affordable, as the government would not have to pay out of it's budget currently. The sad fact is, doctors salaries are set by the free market. It's basic economics. If a worker is offered more money to work at company A rather than company B, they'll go and work for Company A. Company A is the US, Company B is the UK. Now people at company B are crying that there salaries are having to be set by the free market, not the low levels they've paid for decades. Go change to communism if you don't like the free market. I should also point out that in the UK, medical students have to pay around 90% there education, and are hit with a catastrophically high tax rate. Germany have lower taxes and fully fund their peoples education.

On bank holidays and weekends doctors are often the worse paid employee on site (including lower pay then cooks, cleaners, porters etc).

Doctors are one of the last bastions of restrictive practices, wanting to ensure that the drawbridge is kept as narrow as possible, holding the government and population to ransom in a system which is absolutely as David S says a vast bureaucracy designed to prevent someone seeing a doctor. Junior doctors chart this erosion of pay to justify their ridiculous 35% demand back to 2008 - junior doctors are classified as those being under 8 years qualified, none of them would have even left school in 2008. So notwithstanding the whinge now, they all recognised what a great gig becoming a doctor is, otherwise they would have chosen a different career. They have a privileged life, with essentially a guaranteed well paid job their whole life, absolutely no risk of being unemployed, and the facility if they wish to be able to continue to earn well into their later years and at that stage to control the hours. They have fantastic pension arrangements, and an internationally recognised qualification which essentially gives them licence to ply their trade anywhere in the world and be amongst the better, well positioned and respected in that society. Voting to restrict further places for medical training is pure and simple wanting to control supply to try to justify their pay demands and perpetuate their power. They really just need to be told they can strike as much as they like but they are not even going to get half what they are demanding, negotiation involves starting at an ambitious but rational number, but even half of 35% is a huge increase. And expand doctor training - I’ll bet all the places get filled…..

Your residency system leads to a shorter overall training pathway for most specializations, pay is substantially higher, tax is substantially lower, even in Cali. Our doctors end up with 100k student debt; not insignificant at a 7% interest rate with the reduced earnings. Realistically, what are the government going to do, try to send bailiffs to Australia? That would cost more than they recover.

They still pay training costs back whether they go abroad or not though. Student finance have a whole system in place for this. The government even slaps a 10% interest rate onto student loans so they can make as much profit from it as possible. Better to go abroad with higher pay, to pay of the loans sooner, than to stay in the UK and never be able to get past that interest rate. Now if the government paid for there student loans, then they should be required to stay, but the government don't. They loan and then get that money back. Therefore, all the government is entitled to is getting the money paid back. They are not entitled to force people to work for them, as they do not financially contribute to them. I mean come on.

@@oldshiny3012 well go on then, tell me the full price. Because the interest rate slapped on the loan they take out from the government means that despite taking out £80,000, they end up paying back twice that amount on average. £40,000 tuition fee (another £40,000 is maintenance loan) , then £80,000 interest.
@oldshiny3012
@oldshiny3012 Год назад
@@thesupremepizza6893 The government ultimately pays less than £230,000 to put a doctor through medical school The £230,000 estimate can be broken down into approximately: £163,000 paid in grants that the government won’t get back. These either go directly to students, to healthcare providers to support clinical placements, or to universities to reflect the higher costs of delivering medical education. Another £64,300 comes in student loans. These are similar to loans for other kinds of university courses, covering tuition and living costs. Graduates have to repay their loans once they earn a certain amount, currently £21,000 for new students. That applies to all university graduates, whether or not they work for the NHS. The government expects to get back at least 75-80% of tuition fee and maintenance loans across all subjects, as a pessimistic estimate. Given that, we expect the final cost to “the taxpayer” is closer to £163,000 than £230,000. Including private funding, the total cost of training a doctor will be higher than £230,000 The Department of Health’s estimate doesn’t include any private funding that supports students through their degree, so it won’t tell you the full cost of training a doctor to both individuals and the government.

I think you’ve misunderstood the figures. Copied and pasted the below paragraph because it explains better then I could. ‘The BMA is asking for a 35 per cent pay rise. FactCheck understands that this figure was decided because 35 per cent is what would be needed to make up for what the BMA claims is a 26.1 per cent loss in earnings since 2009. You might be thinking: why do you need a 35 per cent rise to make up for a 26 per cent fall? The answer is best explained with an example. Imagine you have £100 in your bank account, and it’s reduced by 26.1 per cent. Now you’ve got £73.90. In order to return to £100, you need another £26.10, which is 35 per cent of £73.90.’
