Until there’s a toilet and a space to wash oneself, it’s not a home. It’s a glamping tent. Also, set this up in any place that gets cold and you’d freeze. This is a sea level, tropical zone solution.

He kind of glossed over the frame portion and how different kinds of coverings could be used. But yeah I struggle to see how the value of the flat pack design could be retained with walls that could survive an actual winter. Also the fabric walls mean a less efficient use of space because users will have to supplement wall thickness with distance, so fewer units per square feet. Boxabl still seems like the best best in a turn key, off grid, portable home.

@Bleh obviously but you're missing the point, that canvas is hardly going to insulate anything, which means you need that heat source to be significantly stronger, with good insulation you could heat a space that small with a few candles, and im not kidding, but as is it would take a good amount of energy to heat up that space, and you stop it for 10 minutes and you will lose most of it
@kiyosenl.3889

Agreed, its hardly even the best glamping tent, and they kinda gloss over any real details about buying one, the cost, and what that partnership thing is all about, like what is the benefit of me allowing these people to set up 6 or more of these things on my property? Is it just that i get a free one of these? Cause that sucks, or do i get a portion of what they are renting them for, cause if i can have $100 from each of these and their tenants aren't obnoxious or anything, well thats a pretty sizable income if you have 6 set up in a corner of the property you don't care about and it's free

Amazing how someone can be smart enough to make all that money, but not smart enough to know that forests/bush are always at risk of fire. If you want to build a house amongst the fire wood build a semi-underground earth covered house. Meanwhile many of my neighbours lost so much and many need to rebuild.

My grandparents, my great grandparents and my father and his 3 siblings all lived in a home smaller than my garage (single vehicle). You obviously dont know what you're talking about, because my own father lived through that "peasant" time period, which didnt end til the 1960s. Only after hard work and good investments were my Grandfather and Great Grandfather able to build a larger home, adequate for a family of our size. My father even lived in a shared housing in Tokyo that had 5 grown men in a room the size of the average living room. You are the one who seems to be riding the smarter than thou high horse. Japanese living spaces nowadays are tiny. Basic apartments are no bigger than 600 sq ft for a family of 3, a half kitchen, toilet and living room they sleep in. That's all.

Especially like the home on 20 acres, if the 'tent' part can keep insulation going in extreme climates outside of California, and still be quick to pack down, if a fire does come through again, they can just round up some friends to help them pack down & hire a truck to move the bases out until it's safe to come back. that story about his house burning down was a bizarre justification all around. 1) you can build houses that are fire resistant 2) you shouldn't build in fire-prone areas to begin with 3) how are these glorified tents a replacement for a home? even if you were to install a water tank and AC (like he suggests at the end of the video), it's not enough space to actually fit a single person's real needs. e.g. where's the shower? not to mention that thin fabric is definitely not going to survive high winds. Costs of these, once mass produced, would also be a lot less... Even now, the present deal of basically free if you are willing to place them on your land and just share income from renting them out puts them at a very different cost perspective than RV's... Modular design also makes them easier to maintain, repair, and even replace... Along with ways you can customize them... No, that isn't accurate... Tents don't include a platform so you can sleep off the ground or have built in storage, furniture, etc, for example and a Jackery is a very basic system that isn't scalable or have the capacity this one can with batteries, charge controller, etc. all separate and upgrade-able. I think the most efficient concept for permanently housing a group of people is a centralized bathing and toilet facility and a separate dwelling and sleeping unit for each individual or family. These can be built to different degrees of permanence. The small units can be easily removed and transported and the centralized unit can be more permanent. In a climate with cold weather the central unit can include a large heated space for easier and cheaper heating. This would also serve as a refuge in severe weather. Think of a campground with a central lodge and shower building. The "tents" could be easily taken down and stored in a basic shed. The units in the video look too heavy and clumsy to move, requiring trucks, forklifts, etc. If the goal is minimum adequate housing for people who currently do not have this, this would be the way to go. People could either cook and eat separately or in a communal kitchen in that central space.

Oh my dear. God bless you I bet you went through a grieving point. My mother had a really rough life. Many of times she would pick up and leave everything behind. One time she had a breakdown over it. I said Mom, for me I pretend like everything burned in a fire. We owe nothing on this world truly. Because we can't take it with us. Things in this physical world besides people, truly can fall Waverly away from us. As long as we have each other. We can do anything we set our minds to. A house doesn't matter we matter. And throughout my whole adult life. The little things that I hold in treasure I know one day. Will either be somebody else's treasure, or gone like the wind. Lost or destroyed. We live on through the echoes of each other. I carry in my heart the good parts of my mom. And the good parts of our life. And that's what I build my foundation off of. My heart sank when I saw the house. I'm sure yours did too. I even shed a few tears for you. Such a lovely home. Given back To nature. I know this to be fact we will need each other more now than we ever have in our own lifetime. We're in for it, these next 10 years are going to be so difficult. Worldwide. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone.

And I applaud his concept to help solve the problem. I myself advertised a piece of land for someone to put their “tiny house” or RV as long as they met the conditions of self containment. And thought of offering another piece of land when watching this video. But Mr. Wilson wants a minimum of 8 units to be placed. I have not the space for eight units. Of note, I ask of no financial gain for those who use the property, I know they are not in a good place to not have a home. I ask that they help me maintain the property.

It was not a natural fire but a act of war against Americans, to take over the land, prevented them from rebuilding. Not natural the number an the melting of iron and rock, the heat so intense, but from lasers from military's jets, bured like the bombs dropped in Japan. A forest fire would not have burned in such a manner. To compare it to a forest fire is just pure ignorance. I saw the initial videos' that were taken down that showed blue straight light flashes directed at the houses. No pieces of people left except small pieces of bone and small pieces of teeth. Not the same as in a house fire from the forest, The heat was too intense.

You can make a Uhaul truck into a better shelter than this and you can just drive it away if there is a risk a any kind. This is a stupid, expensive, tent for rich people to feel like they're camping in their back yards. Give me a break. If you want your home to be able to survive a fire, then make it a dome home encased in concrete. Sorry for the loss of your beautiful home, but these "tents" are ridiculous!

Dome home encased in concrete underground with a southern facade a set of metal doors with fire retardant both in and outside of the south facade. A secondary escape out the top if need be. Which can be a skylight for extra interior lighting on those dim days.

Uh, a bit of reality check is a truck conversion would cost a lot more than this does and you couldn't transports the trucks as easily as these can be inside shipping containers, with three stacks in each 40' container for about 15 per load. These take up a lot less space when being transported and can be modular to scale to even bigger than you could get with a truck. Sure, it won't work everywhere but it can definitely serve a percentage of the population and a larger percentage than truck conversions could unless you expect people to essentially live in parking lots and have all the fuel and chemicals from vehicles constantly in the same living environment and multiply the cost of maintaining the vehicle to each and every person living in the area. It's easy to find flaws in other people's ideas, problem is they all have flaws... At some point just let people choose and stop second guessing what other people do... Otherwise we'll have no solutions for anyone because nothing will ever be good enough regardless of whether they actually work for anyone...

Cover that frame fabric with latexcrete or maglatexcrete and you would have a sturdy permanent shelter. But I will be using a starplate dome frame and adding my own solar.

I like his concept ideas but this just looks like something people would buy for glamping properties. There are several things about it that make it not very compatible with anything other than short term use. He's right though that the current "tiny house" movement is designed for the already well-off. You can buy a real full sized house for less than a tiny house in many parts of the country.

This guy just gets it. Great system he designed. And what a story, that family in that valley... that handsome man in that black on black overalls just as black as the burnt tree bark and the 'tents'. My goodness some people are just so cool. It's like he became one with the forest. Its the right time, more and more people are understanding how things work in forests... in nature. This is where I wished I was more poetically inclined to describe what I'm thinking of. Wow.

This is more like glamming, some nice features,,,but give me a dug out on on a south facing with some solar and earth berms to keep me warm thermally,,,,take a lesson from the cliff dwelling ancestors when it comes to living in the forest.

I feel bad for this guy his house was beautiful. Still though there area is amazing! He put his finger on it when he said he’s embracing impermanence: Prefabricated structures seem like caravans, like impermanent stop-overs, like anything but a home which requires a sense of permanence to impart a sense of security (It’s ultimately a non-truth but that sense probably does a lot psychologically). I applaud his attitude though 👌

I have horse property in Maricopa County, AZ (Scottsdale border). Evading permitting issues sounds nice BUT, 1. Monsoon storms would rip it to shreds 2. The sun would burn through the fabric (as it does with EVERYTHING) in under a year’s time 3. Rattle snakes would have a whole den going under it 4. Did I mention it gets up to 122 degrees in the summer, and near freezing at night in the winter. 5. The dirt and dust blown in would be exhausting to combat. Plus it has to have a bathroom. I just don’t see the practicality of it.
