Just a chicken update for you today.
People seem to have really been enjoying the chicken updates lately, so I'm going to try to make some extra chicken content between the longer sewing video projects. Between the birds and lawn mowers, the audio is trash in this one, fair warning. Happy Saturday.

Wrapping the teen nursery in metal cloth over the chicken wire will ensure raccoons don't reach in and grab the babies and just eat their heads and breast meat. We learned a hard lesson and our kids are the ones that found them before school one day.

Love your chick starter. We found that hanging the feeders from the "ceiling" of the coop, for the chicks, and chickens kept them from scratching the food out and wasting it, also I don't know if you have ever used it, but for water, once we found, the "Little Giant King Size Automatic Poultry Fount" and set a couple up at different levels, it was a game changer. Because we have a well, that is not always working, we hooked ours up to a 55 gallon rain barrel with a lid and we never had to worry about dirty water, or running out again, so long as we top it off.

My mom converted an old garden shed to a coop and fenced in a whole area for her babies! The older ones get pretty much free range during the day. She only has two roosters and three hens old enough right now, so it hasn't impacted our tick population yet😅

You are literally living my husband and I's dream 😭 this is amazing. You're such a great chicken mom! We're doing something similar with our fence around our property and not gonna lie, you made me nervous about it 😅 but yours looks great! I hope mine looks even half as good ❤

Loving your chicken content!! My garden is approximately the size you're mapping out, and every year I end up scrambling with where to plant the last seedlings, I always overdo it when I start my seeds (yearly reminders on my phone for what seeds to plant when has been a game changer), so I often end up with the sprawly stuff like zucchini and squash around the outside so they can go explore into the lawn... had one cherry tomato do that one year too, went up and down its cage, up and down the next tomato's cage, then off into the lawn, I think it was fifteen feet long by the time I pulled up the plants in fall! I hope the garden brings you joy, and lots of fresh veggies! The friends who own the land I garden on also had chickens and I had to keep them out of the tomatoes or they'd peck every single fruit once. Just once... so I keep a roll of the plastic fencing around for protecting the stuff they were interested in.. I also use discarded carpeting I've saved from jobsites over the years to mulch my garden, I roll it out in 4' wide strips across most of the area in early spring once the snow's off, and it keeps the weeds down and keeps the soil moist before I plant. Then I've got more of it cut into 1', 2' and 3' strips to go between rows of [most things/peppers and potatoes/tomatoes] . It also makes a great barrier for things that keep trying to spread (looking at you, raspberries) and around other perennials like asparagus. Because my garden is a 20 min drive from home I often don't get out there more than once a week so I'm installing weeping hoses under the carpeting next to the more water-needing stuff so I can just text my friends to turn on the faucet at the house if we have a dry week and I've got connectors all over so I can swap what's getting water while I'm out there. I've got thistles trying to take over one side of the garden so I'm carpeting a large area for at least a year so everything under the carpet dies, and I'm planting the potatoes near that side so I can dig up anything that decides to be persistent. Good luck with your garden!

I found your channel a few months ago. I came for the sewing and I’m staying for the chicken/homesteading content. I am envious of your chicken breed collection and love watching your flock.

I just found your channel and between your sewing and your turkeys and chickens, your life is almost identical to mine. Its kinda comforting in a creppy doppleganger kinda way. LMAO I'm a site bit older than you with a few kids in tow is the main difference, but thank you for sharing your cheepies! You are inspiring me to get back to videoing and I might even post some of them after I am done editing for once. lmao! hope you are having a wonderful week!

Loved watching your “ chicken channel”! We had chickens for about 14 years, they are such entertaining creatures. I used to love watching them take a dirt bath & listen to the chicken equivalent of a purr when they were wiggling around in the dirt & sunshine!

only 2:20 in, not hearing the guinea fowl...I love the chickens. I can not even have a laying flock in my locality. I will keep petitioning....until I move to where I can have chickens. Your guinea fowl is not obnoxiously loud...when I had them in Texas, my flock was like an alarm system. But an alarm system that ate ticks. Which was why I got them in the first place.

Mariah, congratulations on your wedding. What a nice surprise for your viewers, and happy that you found the love of your life. You had mentioned in one of your previous videos that you might do videos on your home renovation, life in general, other than sewing. I think that is a wonderful idea…this keeps your channel interesting.

I know in one of your previous videos you said that you had a dog get to one of your chickens, and I was wondering if you’ve ever considered getting a livestock guardian who would protect the flock. I know popular breeds are Anatolian Shepherds, Great Pyrenees and Maremma Sheepdogs. I think the latter two might be better as they’re more acclimated to winter climates.

I didn't know anything about chicken before watching your videos and now I am actually catching myself learning everything I can whenever you share something about it, so I was actually excited to watch this video. My jaw dropped when I understood what you meant by "your garden". Self sufficiency - THE DREAM for me. All this is very inspiring. Love from concrete Brooklyn, NY.

Have you considered getting another guinea? They're happier in multiples. I had a 25 acre farm with chickens and guineas and sheep. The guineas are excellent watch birds, excellent mothers, and a lot of fun.
