DEET works for a while….citronella candles helps a bit….a flame thrower is better…a electric tennis racket makes it fun…but….that face mask net is almost the best solution….better is to disguise yourself as a mosquito…that works every time 😁 Maybe a pipe blend with citronella would be something 💨💨💨🤔😉 Nice pipes you showed my’ol mate 😊👍👍 That rope twist tobacco…looks…like…Tutankhamun’s arm…aged over thousands of years…should be a good smoke 😆💨💨💨
You pretty much covered the available options. Citronella works more on me then it does the mosquitoes. That stuff makes me gag and feel light-headed. So I'll not be trying that as a flavor. Flame throwers work very well, but the forest fire danger it too high for that solution at the moment. A Bic lighter taped to the top of a wd-40 spray can is my version. Tutankhamun's arm? 😂😂 that's a good one. I have no real idea how a mummy would taste, but I expect it would have lost most of its flavor. Thanks for dropping by and for the laughs.
It doesn’t matter to me how long your vids are because they never seem long enough to me. You are one interesting guy and I thoroughly enjoy each and every one you make. Just not enough of them!
TD...I thoroughly enjoyed this vid. Make more this length! I know I've mentioned before my best friend that has moved back home from Texas to where he's from in Spooner. When I get around to coming up there to see him, I hope to get to meet you. I have some stuff I'd like to gift you! Keep being you my friend!
Well, I'm certainly not apposed to a meet up. Spooner is over a 3 hours drive from here. Not far by Texas standards, I know 😀. I live on the property of my good friends who are not at all involved in the ytpc or really the internet at all, and don't want to be. So I dont invite people to my home that I don't already know in person. It is possible we could meet half way but that depends on a number of factors impossible to calculate at this time. So let me know when you get closer to taking the trip and we'll see if we can work something out.
Hey, TD, nothing better than hearing you talk about pipe smoking stuff 👍It never seems too long, too short, yes, but never too long. The long evening into nighttime pipe shared with a good book is truly well-spent time and something that got left behind with my bachelor days. Still, a long afternoon pipe and book on the patio is a reasonable substitute. Those mosquitos are a bloodthirsty hoard. Although pesky here, they are no where near as thick as that. Congratulations on scoring the rum twist - great to see that you were able to lay in a good stock of it. That was an ingenuous fix for the clay pipe. You have quite an ambitious tobacco plan mapped out - all the best as you work your way through it. Be well and keep it awesome - peace
I would probably trade in the long nights of smoking and reading and various other bachelor behaviors for the right woman but haven't met her yet. So I'll keep it up for the time being. Thanks for stopping by
These are kind of videos I like the best. Good to see you. I’ve been waiting since the October video when you were going to paint your shed. I saw your other videos but I enjoy these the most. Thanks
I knew there was somebody out there waiting for the conclusion. I could feel it 😂. Wish I hadn't miss placed that Bombay court. Oh well. Glad you enjoyed the video.
A fine old fashioned pipe and tobacco video. The kind of video that brought most of us to RU-vid. Haven’t tried any of those tobaccos, very informative. I do have a jar of the Black XX twist. Literally had to take a lay down before a fall down after that one. If I can remember, I will bring it for a visit some time. More time on my hands and would be great to see you old friend. Next smoke and my clay is on deck. Haven’t pulled it out in a long time. Loved the retro head net, damn skeeters. I am blessed to have sour blood, no mosquitoes or ticks seem to bother me. Always good to see you. Be well, Stephen
I'd definitely enjoy seeing you again, though I can't offer a place to stay at the moment. Due to ongoing construction and procrastination, my little house is entirely full of books, axes, dry goods, antiques, pipe tobacco, firearms, and various other tools. Barely room for me in there. And I sleep in a chair. Hopefully later this summer I'll be clearing things out to work on the inside of the house. There is some chance I'll be traveling through your area before autumn. We'll see how it goes.
I'm a first time visitor to your channel and a new pipe smoker. I enjoyed everything about this video, mosquitos 🦟 and all! Thanks for sharing your clay pipe collection; I got one from Germany the other day, and it's become my favorite smoker. And finally, has anyone ever said that you sound a lot like Tom T. Hall (of Wolf Creek Pass)? 10-4 Good Buddy! 🚛
Welcome. Clays are an interesting smoke. This is the first time I can recall being compared to Tom t. Hall. I can't hear the similarity so I'll have to take your word for it😄. Thanks for stopping by
Dry for sure. Not many mosquitoes here, but damn the ticks haven't stopped. Literally, scores and hundreds getting picked up on every outing. Good to hear a tobacco talk. Happy summer.
Glad you enjoyed the talk. The mosquitoes have tapered off but are still present. Now we enter the cycle of hatches rather than the constant clouds of tiny hungry darts. The ticks are pretty bad but there have been days I haven't seen a single one. Other days I might as well scrape them off my pants legs with a pocket knife rather than trying to remove them individually. Oh well lol. Summer has plenty of less annoying aspects as well. Thanks for stopping by
Great video I like the square tin they fit nicely in a shirt pocket. Never had a problem with the seal and I've had some for 20 years. Thanks for a real pipe smokers video.
Great video buddy. Really enjoyed this chat, especially how you spoke about filling up a bowl and reading the night away. It doesn’t happen often with me now that I have children but when it does happen it is just how you described it. Congrats of finding some rum twist, have been looking for that stuff for years. I guess I should join that email list also. Absolutely fantastic video. Best of luck with the mosquitoes 😂 Regards Mark
Great video! Pesky Mosquito season! I enjoy Orion's Arrow and I really enjoyed Robert Lewis Tree mixture. Being a Burley guy never had , Capstan, or HH Full Virginia Flake.
Thanks! Yes pesky biting insects indeed. I'm looking forward to trying that 8 state burley. I haven't been smoking enough burley for several months now.
Timberdrifter, Hello' sir' ! It is with a good measure of appreciation to your efforts in video channel content here on You Tube that I wish to relate that upon viewing here I remember how excited I was back at the time I started my own You Tube channel all those years ago. I did so, in the spirit of exploring individual creativity and hoping to find a audience for there of. You allow your sense of creativity to be made evident and also by doing so you promote good will by reaching out . You show a great measure of professionalism in pursuit of remaining to thy self be true, and I thank you for it kind sir'! May you live long , as long as your quest for living in pursuit of those things that motivate you live on! Good tidings and have a happy warm weather period there in the great north woods! TheFlameTop
Thank you for the kind words. I started this channel to communicate with other people who enjoy pipes but it has become a bit of a hobby just for what it is. I enjoy making videos and talking about whatever I'm upto. Since there isn't any money involved it's just fun. I wouldn't do it if it wasn't. Take care
Good Morning. Back in the '80's, I worked in Alaska. Those nets sure helped! Worse than the mosquitos, was the "no see 'ems" tiny black gnats that attack your eyes, ears and nose. We smoked a lot of cigars to try to keep them away. A pipe would have tasted better than those things I bet. I remember fishing in a boat where the bugs got so bad, you couldn't do it! Fire up the motor, and make a big circle to outrun them, and come back again, fish until they got too bad, and do it again. Sure took the fun out of things! The fishing was good, so we enjoyed it even with those demon bugs!
That all sounds very familiar to me😂. The mosquitoes have tapered off some but now the black flies, deer flies and horse flies are out during the day. The noseeums are out in the early evening and at night. I have to remember to close the windows at night if I'm going to have any lights on because they fly right through the screens. All these annoying insects is why most of the tourists and even the locals stay out of the woods right around here in the boggy areas. Works for me. I'd rather have the bugs than the people crawling all over everything 😂.
Halfway through my first ever tin of hh pure Virginia. While I enjoy it I prefer both capstans over it. My favorite meer and one of my yellow bole briars both had the stems snapped off in separate incidents of stupidity on my part. Both are long stories. Gonna send them off to be repaired. I also picked up a tin of macbaren va flake. It's good. I've been on a Virginia kick for a few months now. Glad to see another video from you. I missed that version of sun bear but did get several tins of mt. Flower last year. Good stuff. Will gladly send you a sample if you are interested. Take care TD.
Whenever you get around to sending them off, let me know if you are satisfied with the stem replacement or repairs and who you used. I have a handful of pipes with broken stems that I've been meaning to have fixed for years.
Thanks for the video!! I'd watch for an hour if you posted one.😂 Now I'm intrigued... I've been wanting to try Revor Plug. Maybe I can substitute with Robert McConnell. That clay fix was genius. I'm glad you were able to save it. I've not tried a clay yet. Hell, I haven't tried a meerschaum yet either.😊 Have a great weekend. 👍
It's not an exact match for revor but the flavor is pretty close. It's worth a try. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Man I don't know if I could come up with something to talk about for a hour. I usually don't go much past 20 minutes because that's about how long I can typically go without getting distracted and forget what words I'm trying to say while I'm talking. I just can't hold it together that long man lol
Ive been among those before. Ive had to mow lawns day after day in something like that. Smh Never again! It's ALL YOUR channel, talk about what YOU want to talk about! Id like to hear some history on timber drifting, but if not thats ok too, im still watching! 😊😊
I mentioned my subject because I've recently had a number of people subscribe to the channel that have no interest in pipe smoking. They know me from other parts of utube, not the ytpc. Figured I'd let folks know right away so they don't hang out, expecting me to talk about foraging or prepping/ survival or guns, etc. I usually do the same if I'm not going to talk about pipesmoking. I typically talk about what I want to😉. The history of timber drifting? Well I've been wandering around in the woods since I was a kid 😆 that's pretty much it.
I don't have any other channels currently that I put content on. People know me from my comments on other peoples videos that concern the subjects i mentioned. They don't expect to find a pipe channel when they get here😂
That big Canadian you show is probably a Charatan product. They produced a lot of pipes in that size back in the day. I am not surprised that it is a great smoker, Charatan was one of the premium brands from the 1970s and earlier. As far as the tendency of the tins to lose their vacuum, as a retailer I have found that the smaller square shapes like Capstan or the Macbaren HH flakes are very stable. However the Gawith and Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith tins because of the way they crimp the corners is not nearly as tight and their latest tin releases and they have actually starting applying tape around the circumference of the sealed top which is also rather unstable and tends to lose the seal. You are wise to order what you can from them in bulk so as to avoid the seal issue.
That pipe certainly could be a charatan. The old man that gave me that pipe had mostly sasieni, charatan, Dunhill and barling pipes on his racks. If I remember correctly. I should have mentioned the gawith square tins being a potential problem but I never think of everything I mean to say while I'm saying it on video. I do have several of their older or at least pre pandemic tins in the cellar that are holding seal. I was specifically responding to several fellas that I had been having a private conversation with concerning cellaring tins. They are of the opinion that tins must be kept at a stable temperature or they open up. Not saying it couldn't happen. Just that it hasn't happened to me. Thanks for stopping by.
@@timberdrifter8225 Had a customer years ago that moved from the flatlands of the midwest to the high moutain country of Arizona, He had a bunch of Gawith tins he had cellared and the lack of air pressure popped every one of his Squadron Leader tins, He didn't discover the problem for months after he settled in so he lost a bunch of fine blends, tried to rehydrate but that never works very well. Thanks for the reply, always enjoy your presentations. Keep puffin
The first pipe I ever smoked back in the 1970's was a cob. The second was a clay. I still have a clay somewhere around here. When I finally got a brier for Christmas back in 1975, that kind of converted me, but this makes me want to do some searching for my remaining clay.
I enjoyed the jabbering. Rum twist is very hard to get. I do like the flake. You're not the first to say the latakia flake is like Revor. Now that's in my cart and I'm trying desperately to be good😂 Hope you have a great week brother
My cart was full of a number of blends for my spring order when I got the email about rum twist. I dumped my entire spring order for that. Now the cart is full again but I have to behave myself and not order for a couple months. Hopefully there will be some deals going at that time. I'll be curious to hear what you think of latakia flake.
@@timberdrifter8225 I've been there. But it's better than dropping the day after you place an order. I've been trying to hold out for the Macbaren Rustica drop. They told me it would be this summer but not exactly when. I may break down and buy the latakia flake. I keep forgetting to get it when I order. I will definitely make a video if I get some. If it's half as enjoyable as Revor it's worth a try
I'm trying to figure out why the mosquitos haven't shown up in the backyard yet this year. It's been raining form time to time, so there should be enough water in whatever holes in which those things lay eggs. Oh well, I'm not going to complain! The only problem now is that it's getting up into the 90s or 100s. Ah, the joys of summer. I like that clay pipe mod. The first pipe that I ever smoked (before I was ever much of a pipe guy) was a clay pipe that I bought up at an old Hudson's Bay post in Manitoba. I wish that I still had that pipe, but I probably did something stupid like tossing it after I smoked it up a little bit 🙄
I certainly wouldn't complain about not having mosquitos but like you, I would wonder why they hadn't shown up. Despite my annoyance with them, they are a food source for a number of critters I do like. There are several pipes that I have no memory of what happened to them or why I don't have them now. Oh well, there are plenty of pipes outthere to be had. Take care
Hiyas TD, I thoroughly enjoyed this video, a great catch up of piping goodness. Those G & H ropes are really fine tobaccos, after dinner smokes for me, in a smallish bowl. Nice save on the clay pipe, I just went back to clays after a 30 year absence; my first smoke in it told me right quick, that I was smoking too aggressively, I coulda branded cattle with that pipe. If you can maintain temp on a clay bowl that's not too hot to hold, you're the master of cadence and restraint. Just enough rope Gary
I certainly didn't mean to portray myself as any kind of master. I rarely smoke clays all the way down while holding onto the bowl these days. Every so often I will, just to remind myself. Hell, I've gotten briars so hot it would almost burn ya. But that only happens if I'm really into something that requires all of my attention. Like driving in heavy traffic or running rapids in a canoe. I hope you are finding the clays interesting. They require a different attitude or sensibility than other pipes and I think that turns off a lot of pipe smokers. Imagine if everyone started on clays then moved on to other types of pipes once they had become proficient in not only smoking but enjoying clays. I think there wouldn't be very many videos on how to smoke a pipe. Probably wouldn't be many pipe smokers either 😂.
Really enjoyed the video. Glad you kept with it and made it. Not had a lot of the blends you mentioned at first. I have found most all Latakia blends that are pressed give a flavor that I’m not a fan of. No idea why. I can’t smoke clay pipes as they aren’t filtered, but I wish I could. Though I am certain I’d break it. I really enjoy the Virginia’s you showed. Not had any issues with square tins yet either. Hope you have a great week my friend. Happy smokes!
Great video…always love your content…I’ve not tried a clay or meerschaum but now you’ve sparked my interest…same for Orion’s Arrow and that Rum Twist. Great to see you again. Thanks🙏👍😊
I watched this on the big screen the other night and forgot to comment the next day. If you were talking for an hour it would suit me just fine. I really enjoy your video's and find them so relaxing. Thanks TD
I need to get me one of those big bowled pipes for the same reason you mentioned! You also have me curious to look into a clay pipe and that Orions Arrow. Good video! Take care.
Got lucky here and had some chilly weather come through and knocked them down pretty good. It was 45 degrees when I got up this morning. Only had about a dozen of them around me in the garden. It was nice
Wow, clay notches in your teeth? I had no idea this was a phenomenon! I want to break (and later modify) a clay too! Great stuff! Definitely getting one
The pictures of those skulls with pipe notches in their teeth are pretty strange to see. It was common enough that i wonder if it might have been a fashionable look to pursue at the time.
Great to see you TD! All great blends. I am gonna tell you I love tree mix now after I saw you trying it a long time ago. Also 8 state burley is good stuff also! Yeah some of those blends from G and H literally nail you to the chair!
I'm glad you like the tree mix. With so many English blends out there that taste pretty similar to each other, it's nice to find one that stands out from the rest. I'm looking forward to trying the 8 state.
Hang in there man! It was way worse for me making the video then for you just to hear them and not actually be buzzed and bitten. But seriously, I do understand. That constant buzz is a little unnerving. Maybe more then a little.
@@timberdrifter8225 This is a very good lesson for those of us who don’t live with 1 million lakes around us. But amazing means that you didn’t hardly flinch with all of them biting on you. Even northern midwesterners are a different breed. I find your videos enjoyable. Thank you for taking the time to produce them and send them on. Greg
Well I had a feeling the mosquitoes invaded the compound....🤠🦟🌲great to see you today my friend...those are some fantastic blends...all on my list as well....Well send me a text message so I know I have the number 😂😂be well my friend hope to hear from you soon
That would be a fun video to make, and some people would no doubt find it interesting, but I don't want to go showing off all my hardware on the internet. I don't mind talking about a few of my guns, but the rest of what I have is nobody's business but mine. I'm not going to tell everyone how much ammo or pipe tobacco or money I have either. Folks just dont need to know.
Great to see you TD. As always I enjoyed this video. Glad you got some rum twist. I guess it was a good "bump in the night" when you were notified of the drop. I have many of those tins in my cellar and never had a seal pop. Enjoy and stay safe!
The blend that always puts me on my arse is C&D - Burley Flake…#1 I think. I am usually fine with pretty much anything but that one gets me every time. Which is a shame because it’s really quite tasty. But I get the nicotine hiccups and it’s all downhill from there
Do I really need to even break it up before loading my pipe or can I just simply tear a piece off and stuff it in my cob pipe and light up? Seems to me it would help burn slower as well...reason I ask is I've only smoked ribbon so far.
A couple people mentioned the sound so I went back and listened with my best ear buds in. There is not nearly as much mosquitoe noise in the audio as I was actually hearing while I was making the video😂. You get used to it. Kinda. It was fun to hear the dragonfly snatching mosquitoes right off the phone.
Right. When I made that video, I had been having a conversation with a couple guys who were telling me that those square tins have to be stored in a climate controlled environment or the seal won't hold. We were specifically talking about mac baren square tins. So that is what I was addressing. I have several of the bigger square tins from gawith hogarth that are more than five years old and are fine. I haven't bought any since then, so I haven't experienced the newer tins being unsealed but ive seen people making videos about it.
@@timberdrifter8225 There are different periods of Gawith tins. I won’t go into details so I won’t bore you with, but some are pretty bad. Many people had troubles. Me included. 10% of my Gawith tins I found opened and dry. Even the company recommends to move the tobacco in jars. They always state their tobacco is not for aging. They don’t use glycol ,humectants or chemicals like all the others.
I’m going to have to try Orion’s arrow as much as you talk about it. Black Mallory is on my list but I’ll tell you Robert McConnell’s Latakia Mixture is my absolute favorite! Have you tried it? Love your videos!
I was Actually being swarmed by mosquitoes while I made the video 😂. I'm kidding, they weren't too bad at that time. Mosquitoes buzzing and various other bugs are the sound of the forest here right now. My other option to make a video and not get bitten hundreds of times would have been to wait for a very windy day and then no one would have heard me over the wind noise.
