GREAT solution for the flailing leg problem. Similar to what the Air Force faced when ejection seats were being installed in supersonic jets. Read up on that stuff--they came up with some radical solutions that work pretty well. Heat a 3" piece of sheet metal to cherry red with a torch (hold it with a Vise Grip plier), and use that to slice through the cut end of your nylon seat belt webbing to keep it from fraying.
I know this is an old video , but installing a window net above the leg part of the buggy will stop your legs from coming out and in the event you are (hope not) unconscious , then help or a rescue team could get you out quickly without looking for the little straps .. Just a thought ..
i was just gonna mention having a metal mesh over top. ive rented out dune buggies before and that entire area over the legs was 100% mesh. fun machines. really fun.
Nice buggy, would definitely do the leg restraint. Also, get a heavy duty rain barrel and cut it up and use it for fenders. Last way longer then the ones you have. The ones you have will crack quickly, but the rain barrel is flexible and heavy enough that they won't crack. Just a suggestion.
the straps are a good idea but if you have to get out in a hurry, being upside down, panicked and hurried i dont know if you'd be able to slide you legs around like you can. great videos awesome buggy
Mesh over legs = racing window net. You can probably even find a red one. Build a light weight hoop support for it and your good. Very nice job on the buggy, you should do a video on all aspects of the build. What rack and pinion is that and what is it out of? Some day I would like to build one. Keeping an eye out for a snow machine engine. I want IRS rear suspension and I know exactly how to build it. Hit me up if you want to know.
you should wrap the interior supports and trusses for the steering assembly with a foam piece in addition, I think that the machine is safe for rolling longitudinally, but you could easily have femur damage from a lateral impact or rollover. Not trying to sound like an overprotective mother, but it is something that can help the safety while keeping it comfortable
Yep, gotta keep all body parts inside the vehicle at all times, esp during the crash. If my knee had gotten that hyper extended, I would not have been walking (well) for a week. I think a simple, light weight chain across the frame over the shins with a plastic cover. Like you would lock a bicycle up with would do the trick, maybe add a little padding on it.
Leg, neck, arm... oh heck, how about a padded capsule! lol Seriously though, good idea on the shin restraint. It's no fun to get hurt when you should be having fun.
wonder if that's not why they quit making the odyssey. rather than put in another leg restraint why not just put another bar across the lower point of the cabin? like a bar that will help keep your legs in and not add too much to the frame work. that way you have your leg restraints still and not too much extra stuff in the way to make it that much harder to get in and out yet just put a padded bar across the lower part of the cabin simple!
id mount the second belt just like you have the first one. just have it about where your ankles are. that should be more then enough and not something that you would need to do and undo every time you get out
With all these straps and buckles I'm starting to wonder if there's a fetish coming out here ... Fetishes aside, I think the mesh would be a better way to go as the straps 'round the ankles do look a little restrictive. Wouldn't take much of a bender to end up trapped. The mesh would still keep you in but allow more movement of your feet and legs, good in a bind or a hurry :)
Well thats a good question, I have the machine all apart right now to do a major suspension upgrade, check out long travel susp. build on my channel, so its not anything like what you see here
@daddytech problem with that would be that youre toes and probably your feet wil stick out again if ure leg hits the bar. So its better to have a restraint thats lower so youre feet will not go sticking out at all. But if you weld another bar real low you wil get youre legs hurt becaus you hit it all the time, and because it won't move at all you can't get in and out so easy
that buggy is still kickass. Too bad i don't have time to build 1, i still have to replace 2 headgaskets on cars of mine, and then i want to buil a more powerful engine in another car of mine, so i'm busy for the next year or 2 i think
what if your peddles had loops over them that your feel slid in then your feet and legs would never come out.I have them in my fiat incase the peddles stick to the floor i can pull them back.just my two cents.
Why not a simple box to cover your feet, with a slight lip that puts a little resistance on pulling your feet out? Putting a strap across your thighs makes me cringe at the thought of getting your legs ripped off at the knees. Either that or you could just roll yourself up in a carpet and have someone lower you into the buggy. That would protect your arms and teeth too. Steer by blinking, like Stephen Hawkins.
@peeteey Wow, I hope you were just kidding about the fetish thing as its fairly obvious as to what Iam trying to achieve here. Yes a mesh may happen yet, for now the strap will be tested as I now have it installed.
just a personal opinion here your a race car guy dont you have an old window net laying around? if you attach that across the top over your feet it will keep you feet from coming out and any big debris from coming in just a thought
I like that steering column and the remove steering wheel man you have some good ideas and good tips on say no to broken legs thanks for I could put some of those tips to use on my buggy: )
Ya I guess you have to think safety when your flipping upside down! Good call with the restrance! Hey if you PM me your address I'll send you something to hang in you garage that I made for all my youtube friends!
