Had the same thing happen to me. Drove for probably 5-10 minutes and it started overheating bad. I was about 5 miles away and spent the next hour and half driving less than a mile, each time shutting off to cool down and rolling it back before finally getting home. What a nightmare of a situation but a it was a breeze to fix the thermostat, and luckily didn't blow headgaskets or studs

I have a 2000 e39 528i. Had lots of issues due to poor maintenance by previous owner and a 10 year no drive period. I love it tho. Recently I've had issues with overheating which was solved by a new coolant tank and thermostat.

That's a nice Makita you got there. I have one just like it. I bought one after I saw you use it to make quick work of those transmission pan bolts like a year ago. I made the wife buy me the big 1/2" drive Makita impact as payment for me fixing her head gasket. Good times

One of the most annoying things is to keep having to change coolant parts. Eventually I just put a new water punk and radiator hoses on it. Should of changed the thermostat eh.. I’ll do that soon with a behr

We have two m52s in the family a Z3 and an E39. These have been overheated about 3 times each. In all cases the head has stayed full of coolant and the cars were turned off in the red or the start of the red. No gasket or bolt damage. I think the bolt pulling problem only occurs when the coolant is pushed out and the temperatures go sky high.

Exactly the same thing happened to me with a new WHALLER thermostat, changed it for OEM part.
@pyxone

the opening and closing of the thermostat is controlled by 12 volts (the plug on the thermostat housing), if there is a problem with it, just measure it with a multimeter. If you have the thermostat loose then you could also put 12 volts on the pins of the thermostat and see if it opens (it will take a min). Finally, it is a simple heating element that moves the spring up and down.
@SharpieEasternn
@SharpieEasternn 4 года назад
That's not completely true. The thermostat works like any old fashion thermostat but also has an electrical heating element to help open up the thermostat earlier so the car can warm up faster
@andrewgarcia3136
@andrewgarcia3136 Год назад
@@SharpieEasternn this is the correct explanation. The heating element is only there to get the thermostat to open earlier if the ECU wants

I had a similar problem with my 1995 E36 318i saloon (sedan). It wouldn't get up to temperature. A new thermostat fixed the problem and it sits just over halfway on the temp gauge. Can you return the faulty thermostat for a refund or exchange?

I am a layman, all I remember about the thermostats of say the 70s is that you could check them in hot water before installing. I assume such a 'pre-check' is impossible with those new thermostats?

I have a whaler, less than a year old, and red stuff is coming out of the middle. Seems like where the electric part connects to the inside of the thermostat. It's weird. Looks like red grease. Temps reading ok though. Was glad you tried to show how your new part failed.

I think I'm encountering the same or similar problem here. I bought a new thermostat two years ago. Had it lying in my garage the whole time and the temperature in the garage is quite how (35-41C) Just had it replaced a week ago and now the temperature rises to 110. Going to have it replaced again tomorrow. Is there any way to test if the plug connecting to thermostat housing is still working? The plug is a part of the harness. Because I had a mechanic replaced the thermostat and I'm not sure if they messed up the wiring of the plug in any way.

So if I'm getting nothing from that bleed screw hole, does that mean a bad thermostat? Coolant temp was suddenly at all time high today.

i have a question i replaced an engine and trans in a 06 bmw 325 i i got it running everything is fine except the 6 speed transmission, the problem is it feels like its going into all the gears but when i let the clutch out its holding back like the e-brake is applied and when i put it in neutral and let the clutch out it will move like its in gear i can actually drive the car out of the garage in neutral has anyone ever experienced something like this

Nathan, why not an e39 540 as a project car? Immediately contrast the V8 (M62b44) maintenance issues to the L6 (M52/54).

The first, the 92 325i. The 318ti has a totally different semi-trailing arm rear suspension.

Thanks for sharing.....What Brand Thermostat was it that failed? My e39 525i '03 has 90k on it. I know the original failed at 53k per the dealer (I inquired when the airbag was replaced under I recall. - I stay away from that place). I have stuck open thermostat now on it runs cool, white mark to the left center when it is cold outside. It will run at center when it hot outside. I purchased a Mahle Behr Thermostat. From all the reading on forums, it seems that none of these themostats last worth a darn.

MrCuckoobox my 530i is on its 3rd thermostat in the last 18months! The first two were Febi and waller. The last one I went to the dealer and ordered a behr/mahle. I think the problem is the chinese fake everything including Febi etc so you never know what your buying.

30 min is a long drive. Damn you make me get scared to drive my e39 from NC to Atl. Thats about 400miles. My wife refuses to drive my car because she scared it will leave her stranded. She would rather drive my 300k mile 22 year old avalon...but am ok with it. I get to enjoy my e39 all the time...ssssshhhhh
