The only Albanians that had anything to fo with the Romans were the inhabitants of Alba Longa who were Latins and had nothing to do with you Skiptarians. The Skiptarians came to the lands of Roman State in the 14th century, when they arrived in Greece (some in Peloponnese) and were very disloyal and bad subjects, so the Romans had to kill many of them during a rebelion of theirs.

@Christopher_TG
@Christopher_TG 3 года назад
As much as Justinian's reconquests capture the imaginations of Byzantophiles, the reality is that it may have cast the dye for the loss of Syria, Judea, Egypt, and North Africa to the later Arab invasions. He simply expended too much of the Empire's treasury and overstretched the Empire's resources all to regain territories that, in the end, weren't all that much value.
@iDeathMaximuMII
@iDeathMaximuMII 2 года назад
Africa was losing it's worth as a desired territory. It used to be able to deliver grain in the same rate as Egypt, but possible climax change put Africa into a worthless position not long after Justinian's Reign. Italy was still prosperous until the Wars destroyed it & maybe had the War ended after Belisarius's first conquest of Rome & Ravenna, it could've given time to rebuild, but he was recalled to Constantinople on the glimpse of victory by Justinian either due to jealousy or the Persians By the time the Romans reconquered Italy, the gains became worthless with how war torn Italy became & only 3 years after Justinian's death did the Empire lose most of their conquest with Justin II trying to separate himself from his uncle & "be his own man" by siding with the wrong people & angering the Lombards that Justinian had made peace with

As italian, when I was studying the fall of the Western Roman Empire, during high school at 16, I cryed when the Eastern Roman Empire tried to rebuild its Western part, there is really a connection between romans/italians and greeks... They tried to help us at all costs against the barbaric tribes. Also I wrote in the chapter of the fall of the empire a quote "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." LOL The Gothic wars ruined the italian peninsula, I wonder if the Eastern Roman Empire would never tried to reconquer the West, Italy would have achieved a national identity before its unification in 19th century?! As an Italian you really shouldn't consider the Gothic War as "help against the barbaric tribes". Italy was actually doing really well under the Ostrogoths (especially under Theoderic the Great) and the Roman culture of the penninsula was thriving. The Gothic War ruined that, and the penninsula would take over 1000 years to fully recover again.

@montecuccoli mental midget? You are a moron, did you and marvelfannumber1 read what I wrote or don't you understand English?! I said that the Gothic wars ruined the italian peninsula, that's undeniable, but in a view of the byzantines, they tried to regain the glory of the former western Roman Empire, and such spirit was nice and touching to me, but in the end the italian peninsula became just a province of the eastern Roman Empire, and that wasn't so remarkable. Also I said, what if the Ostroghots or the Lombards unified Italy during middle age?! Italy would have been an empire like the UK, France or Spain during the 17th and 18th centuries. I love the Roman Empire, but I never said that I despise the Ostroghots or the Lombards, and to be honest I would have preferred that the Franks never invaded Italy to conquer the Lombards, no hundreds of little micro-states and city-states would have ruled the italian peninsula for the next 1000 years, but a big single nation. Also what about the Pope and the Papacy, a very large part of the fault is to be attributed to them.

@@TheHunterOfYharnam I hope that greek-italian wars will never happen again in the future, but let me say that italians and Mussolini himself, weren't racist against Greeks. He just wanted to recreate a modern Roman Empire conquering all the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, nothing personal against Greece or Greeks, you were on the way, it was just a dream of a provincial man ended badly, period. He also spoke to defend Italians, Greeks and Spaniards against Hitler when he said that Germanic and Nordic europeans were better than Greek and Latin europeans, so he or us had nothing personal against you.

Justinian chose the wrong Justin to succeed him. The son of Germanus should've been the one. Maybe the Lombards wouldn't have invaded Italy like they did when Justin II betrayed them & maybe could've even been Romanized like the Ostrogoths had become prior to the Wars as they could've integrated into Society. Hell before the Wars. Ostrogtohic Italy was friendly to the Eastern Romans & maybe if the cards were played right, a Unification of Ostrogothic Italy & Eastern Rome could've happened

Kostas anagno but anyway it’s definite that the Roman invasion of Italy caused massive demographic damage, killing 4 to 5 million of Italy’s 7 million people, and laying the groundwork for the Lombard invasion that caused Italy to be fractured for the next thousand and several hundred years. Their conquests introduced justinians plague to Western Europe which caused further damage to France and Spain, and it overextended the Byzantine empire which allowed it to be nearly crushed by the Sassanids and then by the Arabs some decades later. It is also well attested that gothic king theoderic the great was a great patron of culture and the arts in post Roman Italy as well.
