The cars look sensational. The lighting is perfect including the observation car marker lights and drum head. The curtains and the blinds on the diner car are pleasantly unique. K-Line is great...I picked up the Red Cross Heavyweights they introduced after 911. Your keen eye and ingenuity can solve any problems. Thanks Dave 👍

You might have already done this. Most time the wire for the pickup hits or rubs on the center axle. It's a common problem W/ K line heavyweights. Pop off the plate (just snaps in) with little screwdriver. Between the wheels. Black tape usually does the trick to fix the problem

I had similar issues with a $20 Baggage car I got from Trainz as well. Two wheel sets had zinc rot and i was able to pry the axles out and put new in because they were on the ends of the truck(not the middle axle) . I dont know how to take these type of trucks apart, so if its the middle axle, i guess your out of luck. lol

Those are some nice-looking cars, Dave. Sorry you had to deal with the shorting issue to get them running. The center set of wheels might be a good candidate for the plastic wheels that I came to discover on some of my Lionel MPC hopper cars. I discovered the plastic wheels when I noticed that those cars weren't activating my isolated rail sections controlling my signals. It was giving my MOW crew fits until they figured it out. I always assumed that Lionel used metal wheels on all of their rolling stock. I discovered another good reason to always know the era before running on those loops. I almost had a situation at a crossing with a train wreck, and I don't have a hospital, ambulance, morgue, or cemetery on my layout yet, and Halloween is just around the corner.
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby 9 месяцев назад
I like em! Yeah I’ve seen some of those MPC cars with plastic wheels, I might even have one or two. I was actually considering just removing the center axles, they really aren’t necessary

I am a bargain hunter by nature. Retail O Gauge is too darn expensive, yet the secondary market is crazy cheap if you're patient. Especially if you still run conventional mode. I love Trainz for that very reason, I've found many great deals there. Between Trainz and eBay, there's no reason to not enjoy this hobby at a reasonable price. Congrats on the Heavyweights! I picked up a few pieces, including matched Santa Fe Alcos, because of the recent sale!

@dagryffynhobby another great thing about used trains: they're not typically pristine when you get them. Doesn't bother me as long as all the functions are there. I just consider them to be weathered. Because of that I don't stress if I too contribute a ding here or a scratch there, it blends in. But if I ding a piece I actually bought brand new at full retail, I get stressed lol.
@wayneantoniazzi2706
@wayneantoniazzi2706 9 месяцев назад
@@billintex001 Hey, if the trains are used with dings and paint flaws you can try what I've started to do, repaint them. It's no sin if they've got wear on them, in most cases only the "new-in-the-box" post-wars are bringing serious money now. It's not hard to do and you can make yourself something unique.

That K-Line NYC passenger set looks great, Dave! It has an impressive appearance on the rails and makes for a great consist. Too bad it had electrical issues to deal with. Glad you solved them, as you always do. I have a set of 15" Pacemaker passenger cars that I've never run, although I took two out of the boxes to be photographed to show them to a friend in the states, but he was looking for the 21" type. Unfortunately, my price would be more than you'd be happy about. My problem is I have nowhere to run them, since I have no layout and after a hip accident, I'm unable to move around easily. I guess I should check out Trainz to see if they're interested. Always look forward to what's gotten your attention.

Before I forget, I LOVED that thunderstorm at the end of the video! ( I hear you're getting a awful lot of rain up there this week, be careful on the road and don't get drownded!) Anyway, those K-Line cars look to be a very good deal, bugs notwithstanding, and they look fantastic behind those F units. Hey, they look just as good behind the Hudson! I've got my eye on something from trainz right now myself but I'm kind of "playing chicken" with the price. I won't say what it is but I've been watching the price drop for the past several weeks as there doesn't seem to be much interest in it. If it's still there Monday I'll pounce! If it's gone, no big deal, they've got lots of other good stuff. A fun video as usual Dave, and an informative one too with your short-circuit diagnosis. One last thing, I LOVE that light-up drumhead on the obs car! O-so-cool!

@rennethjarrett4580
@rennethjarrett4580 9 месяцев назад
Nice stuff, but when they have problems your heart drops..... With the K-line things I bought over the past few years, the problems of the cars not rolling well is due to the needle ends of the axles having a bit of a metal bur on them from the factory. I can only guess if you run them very long that way it will ream out the end of the plastic trucks that provide that needle point system that fast, and easy rolling system. I just sanded my off by and with some 400 sand paper. But you have to remove the wheel set to do that. Wobbly wheels sometimes is a bent axle or, a non center hole in the wheel, fine the best compromise by bending the axle just a bit. I don't have any of these passenger cars but I can bet if you remove the truck from the body you might find screws to allow you to dis-assemble the wheels from the truck. Another resolve for the shorting/sparking issue get out your dremel and dremel away with a light grinder bit the areas that are going to touch and short on that center plate...

Nice catch on these coaches Dave. I saw that sale but passes on it because Im saving up a bit for York. I have tried but have been unable to track down (pun partially intended) my first K Line passenger car purchase. I know the kids were small and I first saw them at a swap meet. They were NYC heavyweights in the two toned gray and I ran them with either my 60's 773 or perhaps my Lionel scale Mohawk. I was really impressed! I loved the detail and the fact they included a diner! The oldest of the kids is now just shy of 40 and has a PhD. The youngest is just shy of 34. Hard to believe it is that many years ago!

Great video and nice catch on the shorting issue. Unfortunately I didn't know about this until my Union Pacific heavyweights shorted and stopped the train popping the circuit breaker and melted all of the wiring in the cars. They have been sitting in a box ever since. The cool thing about this set is the cars are all named Glen something on the sides of the cars and one of them being Glen Gordon which is my name but I use 2 n's in my first name.

I agree cars are too long for curves, too much overhang. The old Lionel short passenger car might look nicer around curves. Cars bouncing/rocking don’t look right. Will shimming around the truck pivots fix it? I didn’t realize you had same cars w/different road names and shells. Did you just want these cause of nyc? Bad design trucks maybe remove metal bottom and replace with home fabricated plastic bottoms. Guarantee it will short again, everything is so close to shorting out. I gotta say still too $$$$ for rolling stock 30 x 4=120 even 30 x3=90 that is well into powered territory for me. Interesting about the metal shorting issue you shared.

I've only had two, their basic generic 4-6-2 Pacifics. Very good quality and good runners. The only negatives were headlights that were too dim and smoke units that didn't work. I think the smoke units are Seuthes but they're an oddball size. In a nutshell not super-high quality but great entry-level engines if you follow my reasoning. I don't have any experience with K-Line high-end engines so can't comment on them.
