Fairing on 2017 K1600GT was loose and moving around. How to remove front body panels to access and tighten fairing mounting screws. Video was recorded with a 25 year old Sony DCR-SR40 Handycam, so resolution is very low.
I have a 2013GT with 100,000 kms (60,000 miles) on it and just had had exactly the same problem develop. I never would have attempted the repair if I hadn’t had your video to guide me. Thank you Tony. When I got into it, three out of the six bolts had fallen out. With numerous people experiencing similar issues I suspect it is a design or assembly problem not any particular mechanics fault. When re-assembling I made sure to use thread lock on the bolts and hopefully will never have to deal with this again.
Wow!! I am glad it helped inspire you to take on the task. We all get a real sense of pride doing our own repairs. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Thanks for sharing, Tony. My bike has been to two different shops in Southern California and I must say they have been excellent crafters. It is very frustrating to see what you showed us. All the best.
Useful video. All faired bikes are similar imo when it comes to getting access to stuff. What l like about the K1600 is it appears to be mostly held together by mechanical fasteners. My VFR 1200 uses a lot of hidden clips and pushpin type fasteners. Might look “better” and save a bit of weight but it makes removing the fairings much more difficult.
Hi friend, sometimes i hear something loose in the front fairing, now i see you video give me an idea of what can be. My bike is 2012 so i think it has many years loose
Hi Tony Thanks for sharing your videos with us. I am repairing an accident-damaged 2019 BMW K1600B Grand America. In fact, I bought a 2018 model in 2022, which had major frame damage but I was able to swop the engines between the two bikes. So now the 2018 model engine is in the 2019 model bike. Mind you, the 2018 model bike was first registered for licensing in 2021, which means that I am having a "newer" engine after the swop. The engine swop was done by a BMW dealership. I now have to figure out how to assemble the fairings on the bike, which is where I will be relying on your videos. Looking forward to enjoy the bike once all the fairings are assembled. Safe riding Marc (Cape Town, South Africa)
Wow that sounds like a great project. I know you will be proud of it when done. I am having issues with my auxiliary driveing lights and reverse module, so a vedio on those may be coming. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Interesting video Tony, I have a K1600 myself and am no stranger to removing all the tupperware to get to do anything underneath. I think I have it down to a fine art now! I was shocked to see just how loose your fairing was, totally unacceptable whether it was the factory or the dealership. I would not have been a happy bunny if that had been my bike. Makes you worry just what else they’ve not done properly. Anyway, keep up the videos and greetings from the UK 🇬🇧🙂
Thanks for the comment. This is not the 1st time I have questioned this dealership about service performed on my bike, however they are the only facility within 50 miles. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Tony. I have a 2015 K1600 GTL with only 15K miles. It has the same error only for the #4 coil. Looks like a winter project for me. I love the bike but might sell it when I have it fixed. I just want something that is not as near complicated. I don't want to have to disassemble the whole bike just to change a spark plug.
I understand. I can only offer this. There are few world class touring mounts that don't come with a degree of maintenance complexity. The best machine once covered with body work, to enhance rider protection and comfort or aerodynamics, become service nightmares. Machines will always malfunction, It is the nature of technology. I actually enjoy the adventure of fault isolation and repair, but understand that everyone doesn't fell this way. Ride what brings you pleasure, not just what's easy to maintain. Just my personal opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great work, love to have that fancy camera you have. BMW cost enough. I'm doing my own valve check and plug replacement and the fairing doesn't have to come off. Lots of parts. I'm Mike and I fix things. Cheers
One of my factory flood lamps is in need of replacement due to water Intrusion. If I cant find a spair for less than $479.00, BMW price, I may have to go aftermarket. Rest assured if that happens a vedio will follow.
I'm pretty sure during the service those bolts were never tightened back up. Question about your top speed (134).. Did you have the top speed limiter removed with a tune or flash? Great video.
Great Job Tony. Don't you just love fixing things due to nothing other than mechanics incompetence/laziness/negligence?? Especially when you are paying them? Similar to you I got to be pretty good at doing this on my K1200RS.
Agreed. If I can DIY I I always go that way. Still can not say it was definitely mechanic error, but I know it's fixed now. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Correct. I used a thread locker compound on them when I was doing another repair. Still didnt have torque specs but havent had any issues since. Thanks for watching.
I had the gun dialed down to its lowest of three settings. The trigger is also variable speed and I can feel the torque as the fasteners tighten. It looks much more violent and uncontrolled than it is. Thanks for watching.

@@tonycarthan6425 I am looking at a 2018 B model with just over 9000 miles on it. I'm really thinking I'm going to go ahead and buy it. I read somewhere that they were speed limited to a 111 mph. That is the ones with the footboards.
Dont think so. The Grand America has the same engine but more suspension modes than the GT. I wouldn't think BMW would limit this dragon to 111 mph. Dont think you will be disappointed with the smoothness and torque of the 6 at any speed.
@@tonycarthan6425 Seems pretty stupid to me to limit a 160 horsepower to 111 mph because of footboards. I just checked The web. according to Google it is limited. 🤣 This will not be the first time the internet was wrong.
