I love and adore this knife. Its light enough I can justify it on backpacking trips, it cleans game and fish nicely, food prep is a breeze, it processes fire wood and fiber (up to where I would actualy want an axe, which is what I need in a knife to do), it pairs amazingly with a silky or bacho at well under 1lb. Although, I filed 1" to a 90 degree on the spine next to the scales. Its wasn't designed for ferro rods, but works great after that. Its ultra utilitarian and replaced any other knife I had
love the skinning and meal preparation you do with the knives you review, shows me performance of the knife doing things that i will actually do. thank you!
I love this knife! Would love to have one to gift to my dad. (I got mine a few weeks ago.) FWIW $2.00 in 1906 would represent just over $55 today...then again, the original wasn't 1095CroVan steel, backed by Becker K&T/Ka-Bar and the scales were pinned not easily adjustable/changeable.
I own a lot of kabars. However....THIS is now my MOST favorite knife. The balance, the weight, the feel in the hand.....perfect. The blade is awesome for multi-uses and as an EDC on the belt. I couldn't be happier.
We love SMKW here in Tennessee. I'm glad that they're helping support your channel. I recently found an Old Hickory knife in my grandmother's kitchen supplies. It looks more like this knife than a kitchen knife.
It looks like the belt knife my grandfather had when I was a wee lad. If you were to honor me with this blade, it would be a constant reminder of the great days in the woods with him. Keep up the good work and looking forward to a variety of knife reviews in the future.
Wow great looking knife ! I definitely want to win . I will trade you my wife for it ! Please take my wife :) I'm definitely sleeping on the couch tonight!
I was just thinking I needed a new P B & J sandwich knife and here you two are showing me what I need. To be clearer, I would very much like this knife. Thank you for your time :)
I love mine, and use it constantly. I'm glad I picked one up early on. I paid $106. They are much more expensive these days. This and the Mark 1 are two of my favorites. I stripped the coating off the Mark 1. Now it looks like an old school hunting knife. The 1095 CroVan is a dream to sharpen, and it performs beautifully.
Hey Chris, thanks for the first impressions review. I’m in for the BK62 Kephart giveaway. I like that the knife comes with a decent sheath and handles and the un-coated finish. Best of luck to you and Will and both channels.
I would buy a a kephart outfit to wear while in the Bush with that blade! (If I won that is) Happy you have the new sponsor Chris, growth is always a positive thing. You two contrast very well in your opinions, so I always feel comfortable with the blade. Thanks man!
Look at all that snow, thanks for the fun review, good to see you out together, now run along,it must be cold there. I live on the edge of a desert, but would love to win and put good use to that knife, in my work I would keep it on my belt for at least 50% of time. And camping with the kids, classic knife. Have a great weekend to all.
Just got home from a gig at 2 a.m. , sat down to have a beer and chill with some RU-vid. I saw this video and was so glad to see a review on this knife! Cheers!🤘🏼 & yes I want it!😂
Good one on a very nice knife. Thank you. I know many people go to the SMKW website, but if you want to chew up about 7 hours of knifeish wonderland, go through their physical store there in Seiverville. It just goes on and on.
It's super cool that the first review with SMKW as your new sponsor is a recreated/reimagined Kephart. Horace spent most of of (adult) life in and around the Smoky Mountains. It's like karma! And that knife would ride super well on my belt...
Way to go kabar ! such attention to detail, I love the taper in both the handle and blade I can only imagine the balance on that thing would be incredible Thanks for the opportunity to participate in the giveaway.
Nice GAW, Chris. I wasn't super excited about this model Becker, but seeing it in use, I kind of like it. And good for Will dropping pounds like that. He's doing great!
It’s fitting that I just came back from a little vacation in the Smokies, your sponsor is SMKW and Kephart loved and lived in the Smokies. I think it’s a sign. Lol. Thanx for the vid, keep it up!
When I was young my grandfather took me into the blue ridge mountains to hunt deer he gave me that first night a Kephart design belt knife for the journey. That was my first deer! We used every part of the deer I kept the straps I kept the lungs and I even Kephart! Lol Love the the vids guys keep the reviews coming.
I've been looking at the kephart for a few weeks now, and it really feels like it will be our new family camp knife. Log some years and memories, and pass it down to the grandkids. Would be awesome to win one, I'm in!
Hey,Chris and Will.Once again a great review. Just shows how an old time cutting tool can still be relevant today. I would love to add this to my collection of knives. I am quite a fan of KABAR knives. Especially the BK-16. Hope you guys have a great new year.
👍 Interestingly, as I understand it Mr. Kephart created this knife to be an all-around woodsman’s knife (hunting, fishing, food prep, camp chores), but most reviews I see people demonstrate this knife doing tasks Mr. Kephart would probably used his hatchet for. Although the Junkyard Fox channel did show it being used to clean fish. We need more videos showing this knife field dressing small game (or, big game), cleaning fish, and food prep. But having said that, good view of this excellent historically correct knife.
Cool knife. Fun video. This could be a good starter knife for kids getting into camping, hunting, fishing, the outdoors in general!! If I win the GAW I think I will give it to my nephew who is just starting to enjoy the outdoors.
Kephart used it to process fish and game of all sorts and sizes as well as vegetables. Processed food and ferro rods weren't a thing yet. He would have used matches or maybe a zippo. Have fun and may God bless and keep you.
Mine came shaving sharp and was quickly put to use. For those of us who have an appreciation of history and historic pieces, this is well worth it. While it isn't the steel of a Bark River, it is more authentic and is the closest replica that's out there. Pick it up and you go back to Horace's camp, without the whisky, but that can be fixed, also. Good review.
I am new to knife genre. Your review of this Kephart design was interesting. I really enjoy hearing about the different knife designs. Keep up sharing your knowledge of knife designs. Thanks
How do you think this performs against the Jessmuk? Very different, one very flat and one being all belly so I'm curious if you have a pro's/con's of the in comparison. I will say, I think the LT Wright bushcrafter Mark II is a little nicer but it's also a lot more expensive.
$2 in 1904 (when the knife first came out) is $56.46 in 2019 dollars. Looks like the cost of materials (or desire for profit margins) have escalated beyond the inflation rate. Thanks for the video. Love the history behind the knife.
I have the Pathfinder Knife Shop (Dave Canterbury's shop) Kephart designed knife. It is a very serviceable knife. This Becker design is better (IMO) in that the blade is about an inch and a half longer. Creating a knife that can accomplish more tasks. Thanks for the review guys. I'm in on this one.
Is the walnut stabilized or just a natural appearing finish? Besides that, the 1095crovan should make this a great utility knife suitable for any mountain man.
I have always liked Kepharts, and their history. As judged by the Sears ad, they have been part of bushcraft for many years. The wood handle keeps the original style. I would love one, great video!
Hey thanks for doing the video that definitely looks like an awesome life I would love to be the one you give to thanks for doing what you do teaching me a lot can't wait to watch the next video
Good to see you and Will out getting some quality knife time. I'm glad to see SMKW as a sponsor. While I do try to stay informed about newer knife offerings (especially makers of quality, reputation, design, and honorable warranty)... here in Alaska this stuff does not grow out of the tundra or easy to hold in hand in local stores. This is one of the big reasons I am subscribed to PM101. I like how Will expressed some of the lineage of the Kephart essentially being modified from available butcher/skinner/kitchen knives of the era and as an all arounder field carry. Will realistically did not praise it or hype it up as something that is the latest/greatest or a selection ideal based on what's available nowadays. The BK line from KABAR is dependable quality... I'm certain this could make an awesome peanut butter and jelly on toasted buttered Sourdough ;-) in the middle of wilderness winter!!!
Funny how I was just looking at this out of curiosity and bam a few hours later you post a video on the exact same knife. Since you're looking for a new home for this, I'd be willing to provide one for it(GAW ).
I have been waiting for you to do this review since you said you receives the knife from smkw. I like it even more now, definitely going to have to get one.
Yeah it reminds me of my old hickory knife which I have several of them. It's a good looking basic knife that you could use for everything just that simple! Would love to have one so if fortunate enough to win it I would cherish it just that simple!
Congrats on new sponsor....Purchased a few items from SMKW over the years from their paper catalogs.(Paper catalog? What's that?)....Looks like a nice knife...IF I win it I would add liners as it appears to have the bolt on scales like other Becker knives...> Agreed...Be a wise decision for Kabar to offer the other Becker knives without the coating...
It is kind of you and SMKW to offer this knife up. I've wanted a "real" kephart for years, and now someone finally made it. It would be nice to win, but there can be only one.
