The song has a great melody, but even more interesting is that it is very honest in its criticism of small town life. It seems to be in fashion, especially recently, for country stars to idealize rural life as somehow morally superior to an urban existence. It is a breathe of fresh air to see such candor about how the cultural expectations of "country folk" can be stifling and oppressive.

I still don't understand how this wasnt a hit. This song deserves the same amount as Little Big Town's Girl Crush. The best song she's every written imo

I love the honesty in this song. This is what country music should be. Honest with heart. She is a terrific songwriter.

The wordplay in this song is incredible. The first Kacey Musgraves song I ever heard and instantly made me a fan.

Nice to hear someone sing about the reality of small town life. Everything now seems to paint this picture perfect country life of beer, lifted trucks, and cut off jeans. When in reality, this is often what really goes on in the smaller, middle and lower class places around. While it's not all doom and gloom in these places, it is still nice to hear someone sing about the more realistic aspects and just real life in general instead of making life just seem like a constant party.

Kacey, For a young 25 year old, its amazing how you can reflect on something that can touch the hearts of many Americans at every age. Outstanding quality in writing words with huge meanings. You deserve all wonderful things the music world has to offer. Great job as always!

I actually live in the town she grew up in and graduated from. So many people i've seen graduate have just gone the same path as their parents, the town is so unaccepting to diversity and differences, and has very little "economical" growth. Knowing small towns aren't all cute and fun is really something, but really understanding exactly where her thoughts are going to, the exact town and school, is very interesting.

“Just like dust we settle in this town” gets me EVERY TIME. Chills EVERY time.

Im so glad, I could quietly sit my 'you-know-what" down this evening and turned into CBS,[ givin' up on that boring ProBowl on NBC] only to discover this Beauty. Im not gonna lie, I did not know this kid till now, Soon as I heard Her singing "Follow your arrow" I rushed to wikipedia and youtube to find out more about her. I've just feel in love with her performance in this Grammy, her voice sweet yet strong, her musics..wow. Congratulations Kacey, You're as just adorable as talented.

She has a great gift for marrying appealing melody with very honest lyrics. Her songs draw you in and don't let go. Easily one of the most talented song writers of her generation.

My parents split up when I was 5, all but about 3 people from my graduating class are married engaged with a kid on the way or more than one already, everyone I know goes to church (almost) every week, I have friends who lived or currently live in trailer parks, and everyone who's even attempted to move away has come back around a year later and are now living the same as everyone else where I live, there are people hooked on drugs and overdosing, and there are ones who get drunk and end up as crosses on the highway - including someone in my class less than a year after graduating. I've watched all this stuff cycling around my whole life and I've always wanted to move away. Always. Then this song comes out and it just validates everything I've always known and it makes me cry because it's so true and even now it hits a chord way deep down in my wanderlust fueled soul that makes it scream to flee.

Coming back to this around 9 years after first hearing this. This hits so much harder now with me growing older and feeling like being the only person that left(or escaped) the rural nowheres, while most of the folks I knew seemed to stay and possibly repeat the cycle. Still sounds just as amazing as it did thr first time.

Thank God for all those Merry Go 'Round's all over America. There is nothing you don't have that you need, it's just an illusion. The further we have moved forward from this, the farther we are away from reality and the blessings bestowed upon us. We make mistakes, we learn and it is easy to criticize but the biggest mistake is forsaking how big your smallness is. It's evertything.

A sad song about a broken, dysfunctional family. Unfortunately, there are many families like that today. 😔

wow how did I not know about her before the Grammys?!? Her songs are so honest and beautiful. "if you aint got 2 kids by 21 you're probably gonna die alone, least that's what tradition told you"...so many young women from any background can identify with these lyrics.

People are never satisfied. Always want more. Whether it's money, fame, or even love. People leave a small town hoping to fill a void and find something different. When really It was never the place they lived but the need to always want more. Coming from a small town I know. Not until you get older that you realize people are people no matter where you go. And only God can ever fill that void.

I know a lot of people that commented on this video are probably a lot older than me, and they commented about 5, 6, or even 7 year ago and its insane! I know that this song was made in 2013, but I'm still young and trying to find the right music for me but this, this is my all time favorite song, I absolutely love it! I love all of your music so much! I was only 3 years old when this song came out, so I had never heard it before and I'm glad i did now. Keep up the great work and i hope you make many more songs! :)

I’m from small town Texas, and moving away from home let me see so many more experiences cultures and things that I never would’ve if I’d stayed. Her lyrics are insanely sensible. The intimate plucking on the banjo compels the heart and it doesn't hurt that she's eye candy with a sweet warm soul

Today is Friday, April 17th, 2020 and I only discovered Kasey Musgraves for the first time about an hour and a half ago. THIS is the very first song I heard which immediately led me to binge watching her EVERYTHING! And on this day, she got yet another HUGE FAN! I mean shes ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!

The first time I heard about her is on the Grammy when she won for best country album and now I'm hooked. She's now my favorite country singer.

Such a great song. If I'm not mistaken this is Kacey Musgraves first video. I respect how she let's the song stand on its own by keeping her appearance in the video very understated with the big sunglasses and hair tied back so that we have no idea how drop-dead gorgeous she really is so all we do is listen to the song which is as it should be.

Whenever I'm in a bad mood, I play this song, everything about it, the story and the beat of it just puts me at ease...Love you Kacey!!

Favorite lyric--"It don't matter if don't believe, come Sunday morning, you best be there in the first row, like you're supposed to". Oh, man, can I relate to that lyric being a non-believer in gods. I like how inclusive to all she is in her lyrics. It's like she's got empathy for your every problem.

Obviously the lyricism is top-tier, but what really makes the song is the tiredness in her voice, the weary acceptance of a bleak life.

Not sure why I hadn't run across this til now. Very old school, most before my time and I'm over 50 (not by much.) Still, totally reminds me of my childhood and the expectations and experiences I carried forward from that. Both good and bad. We learn, we grow, we live, and we love. Somewhere in the middle I hope you and I find peace.

I think Kacey's Follow your Arrow is a marvelous, sensitive and insightful song which needs to be listened to over and over along with her other song Merry Go-round. Truly a talent who sings of life experiences instead of every boyfriend she's dated and broke up with.

I once lived in a town like this. Friday night football is the best thing that anyone in town waits for. Got everyone divided up into their designated groups, if you weren't born and raised there then you'll be one of them, no movie theater but they have a roller rink... where everyone went to hookup and get pregnant... I've been away from there for a few years went back last night and I thought... 'Wow... I'm so.... glad I left this shithole of a town.'

Kacey writes perceptive and powerful songs--her music has a message--great voice, lyrics, and melody--great TX artist--she doesn't play TX often---maybe 1-2 times a year, she looks great and wish her great success

Kaceys music brings me back to my childhood. My moms a huge fan. So when I was little my mom, sisters and I would always drive around and listen to her album. This was one of my favorite songs. It really makes me sad because it was around the time my parents split and my mom moved out. Her music will always have a special place in my heart. 💗

I know she's singing about hypocrisy in people's lives, mom's obsessed with beauty, brother's on drugs, dad's having an affair. I get that. But what is so wrong with traditional small-town values? Sometimes the best things can be marrying your first love, and having kids, and going to church. Those small-town values are what this country was built on and I think too many people today disregard those values when life and society might be better if they had those values!

I just watched the cutest young women singing this song on The Voice 2019. I had never heard the song before and did not Know who Kacy Musgraves was. Not only did the young women (Elliemae) nail it she truly touched my heart and at the same time turned me on to a musician I've have never heard of. But now that I have I can say with absolute certainty I love and I cannot wait to hear more from both. I'm also excited to follow Elliemae's journey on the voice so glad Blake turned.

Let's be fair to the 50's generation. They lived thru a hellish Great Depression and a World War. So to them a house with refrigeration and a car with paved highways was probably pure heaven. Nonetheless, this song is a breath of fresh air.

This will probably go down as one of the best country songs of all time. Beautifully heartbreaking and so relatable with just genuine, raw lyrics. It's really a complex song if you think about it but she pulls it off with such simplicity which is so hard to do. Everyone can relate to this song in some way. We either know people who are afraid to leave their comfort zones and just get stuck and then they look at us as if we're crazy for leaving. Or we ourselves are stuck in that rut and just content with settling and we can't find a way out. Most country songs just glorify small town life but she speaks to the reality of what it can actually be like and it's not always pretty for some, and you have to really respect her for that. Most definitely among the best songwriters of this generation of any genre. She's what makes me still love country music so much even though the genre has drastically changed. She's just herself and that's something that's so hard to find in artists today. Proves country isn't just all about partying, tailgates, and trucks.

Similarly found this song after her grammy win, but I actually quite like it! Having grown up in a little country town, it really hit home to me - she's sad and cynical about the life which most of us are taught to want growing up - she wants something more, but taught to expect less so she goes along going 'round and 'round.

Heard this song for the first time, yesterday, while driving from Dallas to Phoenix. I'm not a huge country fan and was about to change the station, but the lyrics made me listen. One of the best I've ever heard. We had to listen to it again, right away. ❤

After living in a big city for a while, I couldn’t wait to live in a town again. The peace and quiet was very appealing. I guess it’s a simple case of the grass being greener on the other side.

totally reminds me of my husband's hometown; everyone is depressed on drugs or cheating- unless they got the heck out. i was in the military so when we got married we went to germany for a year then settled in San Francisco. His mom was soooo pissed. she seemed to love the "merry go round" life of her small town because it was at least something she could control/something she could watch over.

Love this song. Most of my family lives in the south and I can already see them repeating the same patterns. My cousins have never been anywhere, seen anything. Engaged at 17. It's what they know but I just want to shake them and ask "Don't you want something more from your life than to have a kid at 20?!" Live your life before settling down and make sure it's with the right person, not the first one.
