The song has a great melody, but even more interesting is that it is very honest in its criticism of small town life. It seems to be in fashion, especially recently, for country stars to idealize rural life as somehow morally superior to an urban existence. It is a breathe of fresh air to see such candor about how the cultural expectations of "country folk" can be stifling and oppressive.

Everyone thinks small towns habe this amazinf charm. Some do. Most (actual,small town of maybe a couple,hundred) are on meth, alcoholics. Just shitty life on trash. Hence trailer park trash. And cows. Lots if cows.

I still don't understand how this wasnt a hit. This song deserves the same amount as Little Big Town's Girl Crush. The best song she's every written imo

It gained some traction on country radio, I remember hearing it shortly after it was released and that's how I found out about Kacey, fell in love with her after that first listen! And it did receive repeated airplay for a while. But it is a disappointment how it wasn't a smash hit or even a blip on the radar beyond country radio. Kacey deserves huge success. She is an amazing artist.

It's all about the cookie cutter bullshit in the any multi million dollar industry. Either you conform to what the people who sit in chairs say... or you can take your ass somewhere else... but we fans may like it doesn't mean they'll play it on the radio... the companies have a specific image they want

the media didn't make a big deal about it because it's too inspiring and the message is very good. what they want is to stupify the masses with some lil Wayne and some Miley Cyrus.

no it isn't about being a lesbian it's about a woman in love with a man watching him with his lover who isn't her. She's saying she wants to be more like his partner because that way she would be with the man who she's in love with. The idea being that the singer wishes she would have more of the other woman's qualities so the man would find her more appealing and pick her instead. Its seriously a beautiful heartbreaking song about unrequited heterosexual love.

Nice to hear someone sing about the reality of small town life. Everything now seems to paint this picture perfect country life of beer, lifted trucks, and cut off jeans. When in reality, this is often what really goes on in the smaller, middle and lower class places around. While it's not all doom and gloom in these places, it is still nice to hear someone sing about the more realistic aspects and just real life in general instead of making life just seem like a constant party.

I actually live in the town she grew up in and graduated from. So many people i've seen graduate have just gone the same path as their parents, the town is so unaccepting to diversity and differences, and has very little "economical" growth. Knowing small towns aren't all cute and fun is really something, but really understanding exactly where her thoughts are going to, the exact town and school, is very interesting.

ephemerity It’s kind of funny but also sad how almost every state has that one small town that is absolutely toxic... but no one really realizes just how bad it is until you’re practically grown. I remember hearing this song when it first came out and immediately thinking about my home town and home situation as a child (especially the bit with Dad being hooked on Mary two doors down 😕). Shoutout to those of us that refused to fall in line and broke the cycle for themselves at least!

My parents split up when I was 5, all but about 3 people from my graduating class are married engaged with a kid on the way or more than one already, everyone I know goes to church (almost) every week, I have friends who lived or currently live in trailer parks, and everyone who's even attempted to move away has come back around a year later and are now living the same as everyone else where I live, there are people hooked on drugs and overdosing, and there are ones who get drunk and end up as crosses on the highway - including someone in my class less than a year after graduating. I've watched all this stuff cycling around my whole life and I've always wanted to move away. Always. Then this song comes out and it just validates everything I've always known and it makes me cry because it's so true and even now it hits a chord way deep down in my wanderlust fueled soul that makes it scream to flee.

Coming back to this around 9 years after first hearing this. This hits so much harder now with me growing older and feeling like being the only person that left(or escaped) the rural nowheres, while most of the folks I knew seemed to stay and possibly repeat the cycle. Still sounds just as amazing as it did thr first time.
@elizabethadkins_
@elizabethadkins_ 10 месяцев назад
I actually think of it the opposite. I was so happy to escape that safety net and mundane simple life back then but. I think there's something beautiful about people who are living a really content, peaceful, simple rural life. After living in a hustle urban culture for so long and trying to keep up, it feels like a lot of people have lost their purpose. Idk it's kinda a nostalgic feeling for the simplicity of my childhood and I think fondly on that. Some people are just experiencing as adults too :)

Thank God for all those Merry Go 'Round's all over America. There is nothing you don't have that you need, it's just an illusion. The further we have moved forward from this, the farther we are away from reality and the blessings bestowed upon us. We make mistakes, we learn and it is easy to criticize but the biggest mistake is forsaking how big your smallness is. It's evertything.

Guys there’s so much more to life out there than what’s in your small town. I’m from small town Texas, and moving away from home let me see so many more experiences cultures and things that I never would’ve if I’d stayed. @Mickey Merzon ok so lets define "small town" as the equivalent of the suburbs. did you not know that the creation of suburbs was literally because of systematic racism? the first suburb, levittown literally barred black people from living there. suburbs have literally been historically BUILT to be racist and segregate white people from marginalized communities. You need diversity in order to fully internalize what systematic racism means. And keep in mind, just because someone is not overtly racist or prejudiced it does not mean that they don't have subliminal, hidden prejudice towards others. You being nice to a person who happens to be black, gay, etc. doesn't automatically mean you're not racist or homophobic.

I once lived in a town like this. Friday night football is the best thing that anyone in town waits for. Got everyone divided up into their designated groups, if you weren't born and raised there then you'll be one of them, no movie theater but they have a roller rink... where everyone went to hookup and get pregnant... I've been away from there for a few years went back last night and I thought... 'Wow... I'm so.... glad I left this shithole of a town.'

I think small town life is great.. I grew up in a smallish town.. 7-8K people.. Not much more in the surrounding towns. Out in the country. I love the lifestyle. I love the people. I like it being quiet. I like how everything is slow. its not all like this song makes it out to be. I live in south florida now in a place with 180k people. No town. Nothing to do. Everyones drunk all the time. Or on drugs. Gangs. Violence. Murders. People are rude. Mean. everythings so fast. Everyones in a hurry for nothing. I could go on and on..... point is.. I'd rather live in a small country town over this bullshit.

I hadn't heard this song in ages and it reminded me of why I fell in love with Kacey's music. But it also saddens me because at the time, I thought she was going to change the face of Country music and finally destroy the brainless, empty pop trash that permeated the industry. With her latest album, all she did was become another Taylor Swift and sell out so blatantly that it just about breaks my heart. What a shame.

I know she's singing about hypocrisy in people's lives, mom's obsessed with beauty, brother's on drugs, dad's having an affair. I get that. But what is so wrong with traditional small-town values? Sometimes the best things can be marrying your first love, and having kids, and going to church. Those small-town values are what this country was built on and I think too many people today disregard those values when life and society might be better if they had those values!
@gobaers
@gobaers 10 лет назад
That's exactly the point. It's good to know your values and live your life in away that you see moral, but you shouldn't do so just because your parents did so; out of rote tradition. Examine your life, what you believe, and your place in society through a critical eye, and you'll lead a more fulfilling life. As long as you have faith that others are doing this, and that we understand that we mean to do good by each other, this country is going to be fine.

I left the Mid-West for the Big City when I was 21. Eventually I ended up in L.A. and was doing that well enough to buy a house. Then an opportunity came up, I took a demotion and a serious cut in pay and moved back to the Mid-West, within 100 miles from where I started from. It takes 3 minutes to back out of the drive to putting the key in the office door. Never went back to L.A.

Let's be fair to the 50's generation. They lived thru a hellish Great Depression and a World War. So to them a house with refrigeration and a car with paved highways was probably pure heaven. Nonetheless, this song is a breath of fresh air.

I agree that it made sense for the greatest generation (those that made it through the depression) and the baby boomers. The issue is that the world is trying to cling to those values, which is spurring a whole ton of other issues. Many people want to get a career going but if you live in smallerish towns, the pressure is on to fit in and get married (unless you go off to college).
@daltonmiller5590

Just imagine being born in 1902 in Serbia and by the time you're 12, World War 1 breaks out and when you're only 16 you're shipped off to the frontlines and witness first hand combat and fighting in the trenches. The sound of bombarding artillery a non-stop tremble through the Earth. You're fed meagre scraps and rations, sometimes managing to feast on the rats scurrying through the wet trenches. You lost count of the men you killed last month. The Austrians have yet to relent their assaults. You wake one morning to the normal smell of piss and smoke and realize the unusually violent quake of the artillery is simply you're pal shaking you awake. "It's over!" He exclaims. "The Austrians backed down last night only hours after the German surrender. The Austrians knew it was a lost cause, and the leaders are holding a conference in Versailles as we speak. The-the Great War is over!" It's 1918. The Great War lasted 4 years. Once you've returned home, you eventually settle down and start a family, knowing peacefully that your children can grow up in a time better than yours, as surely nothing could be worse than the Great War... Until it was. The children of The Lost Generation (ww1 gen) went through hell. They knew that their parents went through hell and they could see that they were about to go through hell too. Over 60 million people died in World War 2. It was a miracle if you even returned home. For those that did, having such luxuries as refrigerators and sports cars was unbelievable.

This will probably go down as one of the best country songs of all time. Beautifully heartbreaking and so relatable with just genuine, raw lyrics. It's really a complex song if you think about it but she pulls it off with such simplicity which is so hard to do. Everyone can relate to this song in some way. We either know people who are afraid to leave their comfort zones and just get stuck and then they look at us as if we're crazy for leaving. Or we ourselves are stuck in that rut and just content with settling and we can't find a way out. Most country songs just glorify small town life but she speaks to the reality of what it can actually be like and it's not always pretty for some, and you have to really respect her for that. Most definitely among the best songwriters of this generation of any genre. She's what makes me still love country music so much even though the genre has drastically changed. She's just herself and that's something that's so hard to find in artists today. Proves country isn't just all about partying, tailgates, and trucks.

Similarly found this song after her grammy win, but I actually quite like it! Having grown up in a little country town, it really hit home to me - she's sad and cynical about the life which most of us are taught to want growing up - she wants something more, but taught to expect less so she goes along going 'round and 'round.
