Your comparison of the changes in life from 1940 - 1980 vs the changes in life over the subsequent 40 years is interesting. A fantastic topic to expand on especially if the next 40 years change exponentially. It has definitely been too much, too fast, for many people.
@theoverunderthinker
@theoverunderthinker 2 года назад
the interesting perspective is that if you were Michael J Fox's character in New York that would be true. if you were a black person in the south, maybe it would be reversed. not saying that nothing changed since the 80's for black people, but the civil rights act and integration and the voting rights act were all kind of a big deal. more so, I think, than the cellphone or pronouns are today if you were black. not calling anyone racist at all. not my intention. I am just saying that statement depends a lot on who you were in the 1940's!

@@theoverunderthinker yeah but.... You missed the point. You are not wrong. You just missed the point. ...and it feels like you are trying to change the point. You wanna make a point, go ahead. Please don't try to change mine.
@theoverunderthinker
@theoverunderthinker 2 года назад
@@DaleLumbra I am not trying to change your point at all. I am just adding nuance. Did I not say that in the original context (Michael J Fox character, NYC, etc) what they said was true? My point is that it is ONLY true in that cultural context. It is not a universal truth. it is not even a universal truth for all of America, even for white people. I wasn't trying to make a purely race issue, but I can see how you might think that because.... current year... but that was the easiest example to come up with. Like I actually said, not trying to call anyone racist. some more examples: In 1940, not even all middle class Americans had indoor plumbing or air conditioning and people died every summer from heat exhaustion/stroke. Only 40% of homes had refrigerators. the birth control pill was only approved in the late 1950's. all things we take for granted by 1980. MJF's character in bright lights big city was maybe typical yuppie from the 80's and maybe if he went back in time to the 1940's he would have had a similar situation like they said. But not if he was uneducated and from the midwest. not just a race thing, although that strikes me as the big difference for those people, it is just one example. My point is that the superficial details of that story would have been similar, but the podcast are also taking for granted a lot of things that did not exist in the 1940's that were taken for granted by 1980. If you took a average person from 1940 and put them in 1980, they might be just as surprised as if you brought someone from 1980 to today. People from some places may experience less of a difference than others though. depending on your age, you may well remember what it was like in 1980, so it may seem like things changed fast, but 1940 was not so much like 1980 as you think. You just don't remember 1940 unless you are hella old, so the changes aren't as striking. now 20 years from now, we might be just as surprised as you said. but if you went back to the 40's you might have some surprises as well. you probably have a better life in some ways than the richest people from the 40's.

Because the topic isn’t simply black and white for everyone and it’s layered with a lot of context and individual struggles. Example, I was a single child who grew up in a three bedroom house in the suburbs, I’ve never had to worry about anything, ever. Went to college my parents paid for and was handed a well paying job even after I dropped out of college. I make 100k a year, my family and I have great benefits and my grandchildren won’t have a worry in the world just like my grandparents did for us. My neighbor, was born into a single mother home because the father was thrown in prison for 20 years for possession of marijuana. They have four older siblings and live in a trailer. Their single mother works four jobs to pay rent and can barely afford to feed her children. At the age five they discover football and start playing in the neighborhood with their friends. As they grow older other kids in the neighborhood end up dead or in jail down similar paths that their father went down while this game “football” gives their life structure. Because they never leave the field/ gym they become extremely physically gifted but create no other skills to fall back on later in life. Every waking hour is football when they’re not asleep, sometimes staying with coaches and teammates to get a hot meal or clean bed. They throw a million dollars at you at the age of 20, and you’re expected to make that last how long? Mind you they really want to buy their mom a house, help their sister who has two kids, their dad gets out of prison in a few months. Not to mention out of that milly Uncle Sam took forty percent so they really only have like $600 k for their first rookie contract which is four years if they’re lucky. As much as I agree it’s not “slavery” per say it’s definitely a social trap that a lot of these young men get in. Let me know how some one like Junior Seau is doing with all that “money” they made. For every Tom Brady and Michael Jordan there are at least 10 Delonte West’s that we never hear about. Simply discarding these people because “they are rich” is extremely ignorant and shows your mental depth as a human. TLDR; They spend a billion dollars a day on war but let’s be mad at the football man who take a knee. Ignorant mouth breathers PS- Let’s Go Brandon
@FromTheRoomOfLittleEase
@FromTheRoomOfLittleEase 2 года назад
@Rayborn Whites No, that's selling out, not being sold. Slaves don't get paid the money, that's what makes it slavery. You pay the slave trader the money. ...and the slave works for free... So it's exactly not slavery. Also, most people including myself would give anything to sign one of those contracts. I don't see anyone enthusiastically lining up to be sold into any form of slavery. It's a poor analogy at best. You are looking for something more like a deal with the devil, a Faustian pact...a genie wish...a white elephant... something where you get a very valuable pay off that ends up being more trouble than it's worth. Food, fucking, porn, slavery, Nazis and the Holocaust aren't the only analogies that exist and sound fucking stupid because they are overused to describe everything under the sun. The fact I can list those off the top of my head is an indicator that they are regrettably prolific and unremarkable. I don't hate rich people and give everyone the same understanding I would expect to be given but it really doesn't say anything about your character at all to not pity professional athletes. Actually it says something about your character that you are insulting people for this rich goofball playing the media. He is an incredibly stupid man. He is worthy of ridicule. You aren't superior to anyone for sticking up for him but rather being a bit of a sucker. I think your easy life has shielded you too much. I grew up poor but because of my fathers work I also grew up around very rich families and they had problems of their own and I had advantages they didn't have too. Your story sounds pretty made up, but if it's not, I have to say, most people aren't exactly that stereotypical, I mean your characterization of your life and your neighbors. It's odd that you are talking about nuance because you're story describes two very one dimensional households that a bad tv writer would use to short hand an idea. It's like characters in a joke its so simplified. So...if that's your experience, just so you know, most people aren't living like that at all. Not the rich, not the middle class, not the poor... that's not very average anywhere but in made up stories. I have zero respect for a grown man that plays a childs game for millions of dollars...even if they get taxed and spend their money unwisely. I grew up in a trailer, I don't spend my money foolishly and resent the implication that the things are linked. Some people are poor because thet are stupid, and yes, they spend their money foolishly because they are still stupid after getting money. Being poor does not, however, cause stupidity in the individual. There's a link (stupid people fuck up a lot) but it's not causal. Living in a bad environment does make you desperate and impulsive, but if you leave that environment you no longer have an excuse, its a situation not a disease inside of you. Men are more impulsive when they go to war, but when they come home they return to being pragmatic in most cases. Some never look at life the same way again, but that wasn't the fact of war its what happened to them at war. Everyone doesn't get "in the shit" and come home with ptsd. Most wouldn't dream of visiting a hooker or doing hard drugs but at war? You might consider doing some things you wouldn't normally do. It rarely sticks. If you lived through tragedies or got involved in dangerous business growing up in the ghetto that has nothing to do with having less money at all. Rich people exposed to violence and trauma are also often changed for life, it's not related to income in the slightest. Being poor is like being homeless. You learn nothing but what you already know. It sucks to be tired and cold and dirty and standing around on concrete all day. You don't need to be homeless to figure that out. Same for being poor. Yes, people have plenty of misapprehensions about what it's like to be poor or homeless...almost everything you hear is wrong actually, but arrogant people who have never suffered are just as wrong as the people who defend them and those suffering for that matter about how all this is and what it all means. P.S. Screw lets go Brandon and Brandon, the right/left dichotomy is a control mechanism. It's better when they are fighting. If they get together and agree on something or one side gets too much power it always results in the death of millions and more loss of liberty.

I was born in 1992, yeah you could say I don't know shit and I'm still too young but if you've noticed the other thing about television now is how it's intensely changed. Try watching like an episode of Family Matters now and realize how there used to be so many of those off color sitcoms on cable television and those were usually the talk of the town. Now all the popular shows that everyone wants to watch are the drama series on Netflix like Ozark or Squid Game. It's a huge contrast between acting that I've noticed
@FromTheRoomOfLittleEase

The acting is poor and melodramatic too. Drama was much better before the mid 90s. Now it's like watching children play make believe, I can't watch it. What people used to call bad acting is way more watchable than what people now call good acting. Edit: To be clear I'm not saying poor acting in the past was any more convincing but it was less embarrassing to watch. Poor acting is always poor acting, obviously.

back in the late 80s early 90s, i was seen as a liberal progressive. with age, i understand realities vs. the idealism you have in youth. but overall, i have not changed much of my political views. however, the left today looks at me like a right winger which is crazy as folks I know on the right still call me a liberal. bill and many folks like myself have not changed at all. plus, bill always cracked on PC culture.

What an insult to those who endured slavery. I am guessing that most slaves would have subjected themselves to this in order to make $millions to play a game. LeBron has compared black athletes to slaves as well. Shows how far logical and reasonable thought has sunk.

Is anyone else watching this and when they say they’re gonna show a clip, it’s skipping over it? When they’re talking about Kapernick and the clip…..they go to show it and it’s skips over and then the show goes to where they’re talking about the clip after they show it🤷‍♀️😑

Together we could end the conflict between good people on the right and good people on the left, who BOTH sincerely wish to end poverty and homelessness, by taking a second, critical look at an old idea. Setting Minimum Wage laws to $22 per hour, (with additional, regular, significant increases within limits set by CRITERIA), would cause profits and job numbers to INCREASE (not decrease). Wages would eventually reach a sweet spot where additional increases would be detrimental to profits and jobs. Reaching that point is TUNED IN capitalism. The Criteria for Minimum Wage Increases should be: Regular and Significant AS LONG AS profits and job numbers INCREASE or stay the same. Capitalism can eliminate poverty and homelessness if it is tuned in correctly. To sell stuff you need customers who have money to spend.

I’ve thought for years pro sports is a slave-like existence. The kind of restrictions that are demanded of athletes are over the top. And the way the owners get away with treating people this way is using money. If they pay you a ridiculous sum of money, the can get away with treating people like property, and in turn, enforce rules that no normal person would ever tolerate. They live in a gilded cage.
@FromTheRoomOfLittleEase
@FromTheRoomOfLittleEase 2 года назад
No, that's selling out, not being sold. Food, fucking, porn, slavery, Nazis and the Holocausts aren't the only analogies that exist and sound fucking stupid because they are overused to describe everything under the sun. The fact I can list those off the top of my head is an indicator that they are regrettably prolific and unremarkable.

@@FromTheRoomOfLittleEase Ooooo, you’re a connoisseur of semantics. How erudite. Look pal, I’m in the middle of a RU-vid comment section. I’m not dropping Faustian or asymptotic so that I end up confusing more people than delineating a concept. Pro sports is modern day slavery. You own them by paying such ridiculous sums that they can’t say no to unscrupulous demands. That’s a nice, woody word, unscrupulous. I bet you liked that one. 😅
