Fun fact, in the original dub, Kaiba explicitly threatens to kill himself. There was no shockwave or anything like that that would make him fall, Kaiba just straight up said he’d jump if he lost the duel.
@@WeirdWonderful That's completely different, in this version it's like it's Yugi's fault et Kaiba is seen as whiny bitch, in the original he's a man with a resolve so strong he's willing to kill himself to keep moving forward, makes for a less petty antagonist.
@@murlocaggrob2192 I mean you have to overpower 1. Self preservation, 2. Dignity, 3. Protection of family instinct cause Mokuba doesn’t survive if Seto dies, 4. His massive ego. 5. Logic and reason. 6. Empathy. 7. Sportsmanship. 8. Honesty. 9. Respect for the law. That’s nine things I can think of he has to outwill to be that petty and stupid.
According to another commenter, in the original dub, Kaiba actually threatened to jump if he lost the game, absolving Yami/Yugi of the moral guilt as well. All this money, and Kaiba still can't afford to grow up.
Fun Fact! In Kaiba's original manga debut, he was known for literally assaulting people with thugs and stuff to get rare cards. He found out Sugoroku Mutou (Solomon Moto, Yugi's grandpa) owned a Blue-Eyes White Dragon and after being turned away from it, later scammed it out of Yugi by asking to see it and swapping it with a counterfeit. Yugi noticed and when he confronted Kaiba after school, he fucking smacked Yugi upside the head with his metal briefcase. Naturally, Yami came out later and tricked him into a Shadow Game, as he was wont to do pre-Duelist Kingdom. In this shadow game, monsters played would come to life from the card. Eventually, Kaiba lost and Yami inflicted a Penalty Game on him, forcing him into the waking hell of having his soul tossed into an illusory world inhabited by Duel Monsters (a concept that would later be revisited for the Duel Monsters spirit world) to die over and over at the monsters' hands. Here's the thing. *He got out.* After getting out he acquired the other 3 Blue-Eyes cards in existence, by bankrupting 2 owners and driving the third to suicide. He then kidnapped Sugoroku and forced Yugi and co. to go through Death-T, *a literal death trap for which he hired professional hitmen, a torturer, AND A LITERAL SERIAL KILLER* in order to save him. At the end, Yami once again dueled Kaiba, who had taken his traumatizing nightmare experience and created holographic duel monsters to _simulate it._ In the end, Yami performed a new penalty game, Mind Crush, on Kaiba in order to literally force him to be a better person, lest he be trapped in a coma forever. And he _still_ came out of it an asshole. Not a murderous asshole, sure, but still an asshole. Nobody can stop this lunatic. A cliff won't stop him. DEATH CANNOT STOP THIS FUCKING MADMAN.
How much of an asshole, you might ask? During the Marik ark, he saved Jono from drowning by throwing him the key that opened the chains binding Jonouchi... *AFTER* deliberately waiting for Jonouchi to be almost out of air.
@@EverRusting no his body have 2 consciences. Yugi, the original one, and the pharaon who is inside of his collar. When they start a duel the pharaon "possess" the body

@@Rainok theres also a degree of reincarnation with them, shown shown by a now older (without atem) Yugi giving Jaden Winged Kuriboh. Along with Yugi's grandpa and Kaiba. It's not a 1:1 time loop thing though. Yeah it's as strange as it sounds
It really was, especially since just plain dying didn't actually make sense when it came to soul stealing and some characters coming back even though they obviously couldn't if they were just dead.
It's so fucking ominous that throughout this entire exchange, there isn't any background music, but just the sound of cold wind blowing as Kaiba came to the realization of how readied Yugi was to murder him in cold-blood.
The best part of all this. Yugi never once lied. He wasn't considering killing Kaiba. He was going to do it. Yugi was just more baffled as to how easy Kaiba was going to make it.
"oh i was planning to kill you as soon as i knew you were alone on this island, brought a shovel and everything but if your just going to hand it to me who am i to look a gift tatsunootoshigo in the mouth"
Kaiba: "Wait so me leaving your grandfather for dead and giving billions of dollars to the man that stole your grandfather's soul justifies you killing me?" Yami and Yugi: "In every conceivable way."
He can't step back until the chain resolves. Kaiba may skirt the law and common decency, but he's not about to break the rules in a children's trading card game
Kaiba’s a lot of things, but he’s not a cheater, he knows once you change positions during a turn, you’re not allowed to change positions again until the NEXT turn. Really, his hands were tied
Something to note is that Yugi's friends are all right there. They're listening to this whole exchange and aren't saying anything. They know what's going to happen and they're keeping quiet. That's some ride or die right there.
look in the manga he put all of them through an amusement park of death (not even joking. One leg involved a horror coaster where if you made ANY noise a mic would pic it up & electric chair your ass). I'm pretty sure they were ALL out of fucks to give
My brain at first: "Wait, dueling is normal in this universe. A murder investigation would absolutely conclude that Kaiba likely fell from the impact of a duel." My brain a second later: "You forget that this duel ISN'T normal and the duel disks are still _Kaiba's_ prototypes at this stage in the story. Normal dueling is done on huge stadium things. The cops would be at a loss. Moreover, Pegasus owns the island (an island near the US owned by an American citizen and, therefore, out of Japan's jurisdiction BTW) and he surely has an incentive to cover up the death of a wealthy businessman _he_ lured to the island in the first place, ESPECIALLY if it's a known business partner. Yugi would have gotten off scot-free if he'd done this"
I like how Yugi, who is suppose to be the soft-spoken main protag is telling his darker half to get a stronger card. Great character development if you ask me
'Did we shake hands and be friends?' Howling at that because it's basically the point Kaiba realises that contrary to what he's being told, Yami _is_ considering killing him so tries to save himself 🤣
I like the little detail of how when Yami first started laying out what all Kaiba did he referred to Sugoroku / Solomon as Yugi's grandfather, but as he got more and more pissed about the situation he started referring to him as HIS grandfather. Shows how much Yami cares about Yugi and his grandfather.
Ya think part of it might be that the pharaoh was likely a child king (not uncommon in ancient Egypt) and likely never had proper parenting? Like, sure, he'll never admit it outright, but yugi's grandpa is probably closest thing he's had to a father figure in his entire existence. Just imagine the combined anger of a hurt child mixed with the devine wrath of an ancient king. kaiba fucked up.
At that point in the story, he didn't know he was a Pharaoh, he didn't knew who he was exactly, and he only started to question it post-Duelist Kingdom. For all he knew, he was Yugi, because those were his only memories.
Nah at this point and most of his early appearances he legit thought he WAS yugi himself and had yugi's memories so to him yugi's grandpa was his grandpa
I just love the idea of the angel and devil on the shoulder talking to the protagonist, but the angel in this case is like “no no, don’t do it with that… use this instead it’s much cleaner!”
“That’s it, she’s going down.” “No, no. From above, the wicked shall receive their just reward.” *both see a spiked chandelier at the same time* “That’ll work.”
Maybe it was designed for military applications originally, but the army was like "why we would we ever buy a helicopter or weapon shaped like a dragon from a children's card game...?"
@@Evilshadow529 but still he never killed, and most of the punishment where illusion created inside of mind(mind crush). And besides the guy who puts on fire was a serial killer. Edit: Alright, alright, I see now that the anime censored many things from the manga, my bad.

2:06 To be fair to Yugi, Kaiba was also trying to murder his entire friend-group in death games, with one of them seemingly dead, crushed by falling cubes, at the beginning of the duel. The gramps is basically just the start of the reasons Kaiba got his mind fucked with.
@@ugochukwunyere3196 if you're asking about when the death games happened, manga version of the arc of him stealing the blue eyes. The duel in that first episode? Yeah that was the climax of a WHOLE FUCKING ARC in the manga.
For people that only watched the 4Kids dub and never saw Season 0 or read the manga, this is actually an accurate representation of Atem at this point. Homie was very angry vigilante justice kind of thing. Killing people, sending them to never ending mental torment, and all that nonsense. This duel is the one where Yugi and Atem had basically their first big argument and their characters start to develop. Atem learns to be more caring/sympathetic, and Yugi started to learn to stand up for himself and stuff like that. One of the top comments by Zekeram on this video also talk about how fucking insane Kaiba was as well.
@@Miatpi Pharoah calls for the attack, Yugi forces a swap and calls it off at the last second. Yugi spends the next episode or two terrified to duel, in fear of the Pharoah's bloodlust.
@@SpecialInterestShow The ending 2 seconds is a scene of Kirby flying off a cliff, with Kaiba poorly edited on top of him. You can still see Kirby, actually because of it.
God, even more horrifying though. "Did we shake hands and be friends?" Kaiba is still suffering the brain crush effects... and more than that, Yami is h a p p i l y reminding him, of what he is capable of..
Fun fact: If I remember correctly, *He* (Atem) Can *PROBABLY* Control the Probability because of his relic, Meaning two things; First, He *Can* and *Will* Send his enemy to the shadow realm because he can control (?) the Probability of him getting an strong card; Second, If it wasn't for Yugi, Atem Would be Glady to Do it on Both manga and Anime meaning that He can And WILL kill someone on cold blood

@@levievil9220 Sorta, tho the Items weren't directly the cause of Akhenamkhanen's death nor was Akhenaden. What happened was: Mahad, who held possession of the *Millennium Ring* and so saw thru the Ring how those of Kul Elna had been sacrificed to create the MI, informed Atem's father Akhenamkhanen of the truth behind the Millennium Items' creation, and the sheer anxiety and guilt all but caused the pharaoh to drop dead sometime later I'm not joking xD.
In the manga he not only mugged/kidnapped his grandpa but he put them through a SAW styled tower of death, with assassin’s and a deranged cereal killer, so yeah this checks out
Y'know it's weird how in the Manga, Kaiba considered having Mokuba poison Yugi, and having him kidnapped by a serial killer. But he himself said he wouldn't have Joey and Yugi fight to the death. Did Kaiba really evaluate how messed up he was before all of that?
I mean, I love breakfast and all but I wouldn't really have a nervous breakdown nor extreme fear for my life if someone killed my cereal bowl... apart from that, how exactly do you do that? You get it all soggy with water or wut
In Japanese canon, Atem was willing to do it the whole time, because he never likes losing. Yugi on the other hand was crying afterwards not solely because he lost a children's card game, but because his other "me" was gonna do it.
I believe that was in the dub as well? Started a whole mini-arc where Yugi was too afraid to hand control over to Atem again which caused him and Atem to actually start talking with each other like separate people, instead of just merging entirely like they've been doing up to this point.
It wasn't for such a petty reason, he was willing to do it because otherwise he would lose Duelist Kingdom, and thus both his grandpa's soul and Joey's prize money. But the other Yugi stepped in and stopped him, because "it's the right thing to do", he showed kindness to his enemy, something that Atem would learn from him.
@@seasnaill2589 That was also something the dub really changed. In the original, Yugi is Yugi and Atem is Atem (no Yugi using Atem's body but not using his mind, or whatever that was). The problem was that Atem is so frightened of losing that he felt so pressured by Pegasus that he only had eye for Pegasus, and this pressure caused him to make mistakes in his duel against Mai. Then later, Mai talks about a duelist's courage, that you can't have that unless you're prepared to lose and get hurt, which is tested when a duelist is about to lose. This then makes Atem flash back to the situation with Kaiba, where he realizes that the thought of losing frightened him to the point he was willing to take Kaiba's life, while Yugi on the other hand chose to put himself between Kaiba and Atem to take the loss and suffering rather than take Kaiba's life. Atem then fully realizes he has weaknesses while Yugi has strengths that compensate his weaknesses, something he subconsciously already knew but didn't want to admit to himself before. It's then at that point he takes on Yugi's strength of a duelist's courage, not only alleviating the pressure he felt from Pegasus but also feeling courageous enough to take a very risky bluff vs Mai that eventually leads to his win.

I love how explaining to Yugi their goals align never once crosses Kaibas mind even when he is already seeing the error of his thought process. True to character lol
Yep, Kaiba even has an argument for why the current situation has little to do with him. Explain that Pegasus betrayed him, that despite past actions he had no part of Pegasus's planning and their connection was just actually legitimate business. That's he's just desperate to save Mokuba. I doubt it would help but he could try an argument that's even honest
@@toawing The only reason that Pegasus is doing any of this is that Kaiba corp's stock price plummeted when Yami sent him into a coma. So, this situation is partially Yami's fault.
@@Sewblon And he only ended up in a coma because he kidnapped Solomon, forced him to duel while having a heart attack, then ripped up his prized card given to him by a man who he nearly died with. It all comes back to Kaiba being an ass.
Love how that's the pharaoh talking when he says "I didn't like that very much Kaiba." Meaning the pharaoh cares about Yugi so much he's willing to kill the man who hurt Yugi
I love how Yugi Moto comes out and stop the pharaohs like don't do things by half measures use the monster strong enough to not only send him to the shadow realm but make it hurt in the process
He did, but Kaiba didn't trust Yugi to save Mokuba for him. If Kaiba lost that duel, then he wouldn't be allowed to challenge Pegasus, which was the deal they made to free Mokuba. So, to Kaiba at that point, losing the duel would be equivalent to dying anyways, since his only reason to live then was Mokuba. For context, Kaiba's been in a coma for 6+ months and only got out of it because he wanted to save Mokuba.

This gets better. In the manga before the anime starts, he actually both did not care about his brother being trapped in what is basically a cage full of Scarecrow's fear toxin, all cause he lost to Yugi, but also invited Yugi and co. to a game, gave them non working guns so they couldn't actually beat anyone and gave their opponents ACTUAL GUNS with LIVE AMMUNITION, with the intent of offing Yugi AND all his friends, in cold blood.
Kaiba went out easy I say, yes he did received a penalty that got him fainted for a year, but let's be real, he should have killed Kaiba, and the sole reason I think he didn't was because Mokuba told him about his past.
In the original Japnese version and Manga, the attack wasn't what was going to make Kaiba fall off the tower. He fully intended to jump off himself if he lost.
To be absolutely fair to Kaiba, the only reason he joined the games in the first place was to get his little brother's soul back. He felt there was no point of living if he didn't make it to the finals (at least, that's how I interpreted it) because he would never see Mokuba again. It's kinda heartwarming in a twisted way.

The funny thing is that in the manga kiba did MUCH worse. It was a series of games called "Death-T" in which yugi had to survive 5 death games, which included a food based Russian roulette game and and a room where there would be countless boxes rainning down to crush them. It was even implied at the time that Tristan died to that room.

I didn't think you even knew what generosity was! "
It wasn't even for that reason. He needed to save his Grandpa that, as said in the video, got his fucking soul stolen. In his mind, if he doesn't beat Kaiba here, he can't get into the castle, can't duel Pegasus, can't save Grandpa.
This is why people tend to prepare a parachute or something to catch them as a security measure for the "falling to your death" bluff not working as intended, Kaiba!

I like how a lot of people were surprised to see in the original that Yami almost didn't hesitate at all to kill Kaiba in that scene If we consider the first few manga volumes, that wouldn't even be in the top 5 worst things he's done
It's interesting how the 4Kids dub changes it to the blast from the attack will knock Kaiba off of the ledge, which makes Yami consider murdering Kaiba. However, the original having Kaiba threaten to jump makes Yami not as bad. But apparently having the antagonist threaten suicide is worse than having the antagonist say that "if you attack you'll kill me," which is still basically threatening suicide but also blaming the other person for it. At least in the original, Yami attacking comes off less cold blooded because it could simply be calling Kaiba's bluff and if Kaiba isn't bluffing Yami still wouldn't be responsible although Yugi probably would have held Yami responsible if Kaiba decided to jump after losing.
@@Peelster1 What is funnier is that in the dub, when Kaiba said that him being blown off the edge could 'hurt him' and Yami wouldn't want that, Yami's responses was "Don't tempt me!".
@@Peelster1 well even if the wind wouldn't knock him off, knowing how much Kaiba needs to win and how much he loses if he doesn't, there's no way in hell he's bluffing. Now, whether he would have the strength to follow his threat is another story, but everyone could tell he didn't bluff in the slightest, so I'd say Yami is just as responsible in both cases And again, in his manga debuts he's such a psycho he wouldn't hesitate for one second to beat Kaiba and then say"what are you waiting for? Jump" and punish him if he doesn't
He did hesitated a bit, but ultimately thought about losing the duel would mean his grandpa would be trapped forever, thus he was willing to finish off Kaiba.
