Kakejiku - Making of a Japanese Hanging Scroll 

"I go into my work and my work goes into me". Deeply moving. I wish you many more happy years of making Kakejiku.

I was deeply touched by this documentary. If everybody could put their full heart and soul into their work how amazing would our world be?

Hokusai: "From around the age of six, I had the habit of sketching from life. I became an artist, and from fifty on began producing works that won some reputation, but nothing I did before the age of seventy was worthy of attention. At seventy-three, I began to grasp the structures of birds and beasts, insects and fish, and of the way plants grow. If I go on trying, I will surely understand them still better by the time I am eighty-six, so that by ninety I will have penetrated to their essential nature. At one hundred, I may well have a positively divine understanding of them, while at one hundred and thirty, forty, or more I will have reached the stage where every dot and every stroke I paint will be alive. May Heaven, that grants long life, give me the chance to prove that this is no lie."

Japanese artisans always amaze me with their dedication, love toward their works. That is a key to their flawless, exquisite products. I can`t never get bored to watch any japanese artisans at work, all of them, i must say; pour out their mind and soul into their doings like they are their own children. My absolute admirations...

I do Chinese scroll mounting myself for my artworks and it is interesting to compare the two different methods and aesthetics of doing the same thing. For example, the Japanese like to use a wider range of brocades and mounting silks whereas the Chinese use a more limited range of subtle patterns, and whereas the Japanese mount the two swallow strips sticking out, the Chinese have them firmly stuck down onto the mount.

This is a beautiful short film that captures so well both the craft of scroll mounting and the feeling in the work of the craftsman. It is really a timeless statement about our love of making things. Very nice work!

i was looking for more information about wall scrolls, and i what i found was far greater. "Nyu Ga Ga Nyu" Thank for the Philosophy lesson. I am now inspired!

I always saw these scrolls in Anime and Japanese movies and decided to see how they are made and I must say this video impressed me and I have a great deal of respect for this beautiful art form. Thank you so much for sharing this with us

Thank you so much. Now I can truly enjoy the scroll hanging before me. It is said that Hokusai once remarked that everything he had done before age 70 was nothing. When we (my husband and myself) visited the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston, we then realized that Hokusai was truly a humble man for he could have boasted about any number of his woodblock prints done before the age of 70. He called himself "Old man crazy about art." And indeed he was. So, your humility is refreshing and comes from a long line a wonderful artists. Thank you again.

Je regarde et regarde cette video cherchant à percer certains détails car mes stages d'urauchi ne sont pas encore assez poussés pour entreprendre la réalisation d'un kakejiku. Je sais maroufler pour le washi et le tissu mais notre Sensei n'a pas encore abordé le travail complet et je suis trop impatiente: j'essaie seule de réaliser ce montage et cette video étape par étape et si gentiment présentée est actuellement la seule sur le web permettant de s'en approcher .Merci beaucoup, vous me redonnez du courage ! What did he write on the bottom timber weight? The part now covered by the fabric of the scroll?

Does anybody know the glue/adhesive he used for it? It amazes me that it was able to just be adhered at the edges with so little

Dommo arigato. Honto ni ii desu. Demo chisai spelling error ga arimasu neh. "restauration" wa chigaimasu neh. Dozo "restoration" ni aite kudasai. Watakushi wa kodomotoki ni Ashiyagawa ni sundeimashita.
