Maaan, that bit where he's just casually flying over the civilians, and they spot him with such excitement, knowing they're being looked after...that right there, is why this film was so endearingly charming. They really captured the essence of Superman that the newer films rarely show. It's not always about the grandiose fights against big monsters. It's those little moments from the perspective of the civilians where they just feel so safe seeing their hero.
You forgot man of steel did the same thing where superman flew to stop world engine lois, general, females soldier and dr emil hamilton was looking up in awe as he flew at superhuman speeds so your wrong about that
@@AurianWarriorOfDarkness oh yeah, after he destroyed half the city? you mean after they tried to put him in jail? or was it after they tried to make him look bad? you missed it bro.
@@TheSlingshotKid73 the city got destroyed because there's literally another world engine in the city and in the indian ocean, he has to choose one and zod is fighting him. Collateral damage has always been part of superman's fights because he's strong than an average human being, Look at superman 2, there's a lot of collateral damage there as well.
@@absolutelyabsolute4671 Not all Superman fights have collateral damage. The reason Man of Steels fights work is because he is new to being a superhero. He hasn't had experience fighting superpowered beings in a world that, to him, is made up of cardboard. But Routh/Reeves Superman is an experienced Superman by now; he knows to take the fight away from populated areas, hence why there isn't that much destruction in those films. Not that there isn't ANY destruction, but there is far less damage in Superman II than in all of Man of Steel.
Man that scene where he flies pass is so grounded, I could see my self looking up in awe just as those people did. This movie is the superman we needed. Simply lovely.
I always loved how this movie stayed true to actually showing him fly. I love man of steel, but you barely see him fly, he’s just darting from here to there, instant takeoffs and landings. To me, seeing him fly is just as important as the superhero stuff, lol
When his father is talking to him and then switches off to this scene @ 3:43 I felt the weight of Superman’s responsibilities. I loved the way they show him floating still over the planet listening to the people’s needs. Brandon played a emotional part of Superman that I really appreciated.
And he gently floats away, instead of leaping and making a giant crack in the road. I never saw the point of this trope in superhero media, all it seems to do is cause more damage, why not just take off gently and then gather speed once you're off the ground?
the imagery in this film is so beautiful, and you can see how truly alone he is in the world. a man above the rest of us and living among us, but never really one of us.
Something we need to point out is the moment Superman’s heart breaks after hearing Lois doesn’t love him, he immediately flys to space to listen out for people in need
0:03 One of the best Superman Flight shots in history. The flapping of his cape The honest to God pretty good insertion of the cgi model to fit in the environment, very convincing. The whoosh as he passes by The camera following him perfectly, Yes, that little girl exclaiming "Superman", LOVE her, love that reaction; A child's reaction. And the mother reaching for her, but missing because even SHE's in awe of what she just witnessed, not even breaking her gaze to get the child, lol, accurate reaction. Seamless shot. A pov shot from a street corner, going home from work or from a child's perspective, seeing a man deadass fly overhead while everyday life moves on. No DBZboss fights, yet it's the LITTLE details are what's memorable.
This movie is so underrated. Brandan Routh is an amazing Superman, and this honestly hits me in the feels because though humanity does and says such cruel things to Superman, he, an outcast and an alien, still listens to our cries and helps us.
A scene like this tells you how great this movie is. It brings emotions, character and intensity to the actors. Unfortunately we live in a time where humans' taste is at its lowest.
Damn dude it's even worse now, plus all these haters are just butthurt they can't use the fucking corpses of the old actors so they *have* to recast so they hate on it for no good reason
Yup. It's so realistic in most of the scenes. Plus smooth and majestic. Man of steel doesn't even come close to portraying it the right way - It's just fast and shaky cam work to mask the lazy effects. Even older superman movies were better in that regard.
@@noobsavant nah the earlier superman had wacky flying around earth while glowing blue turning back time and dumb shit. and snyder's superman has something the other superman barely used that is super speed. (faora showed it off the best). this one is calm and gentle. 70s was like watching superman while on drugs. MOS shows the true powers of kryptonians
@@Nemenis he used super speed to turn back time, every time he changed into superman, rescuing lois as clark (Donner cut) and catching up with the missile in the first film, they showed his speed more than he did in mos
The idea of Superman being gone for five years and comes back to find that not only has Lois moved on but the entire world has as well made for a great story, they should have kept that going and expanded it into a new series of movies with him trying to find his place in the world again. It would have been amazing I think and Brandon Routh did a wonderful job in carrying that weight and emotion on his shoulders, just wished we got to see more of that but I'm really excited to see him back in the suit one more time for the crisis crossover this December
Too bad they gutted the entire Return to Krypton scene which explains his absence from Earth and why he was on the edge of death when his ship crashed.
Love Man of Steel but the flying scenes here are done so beautifully and gracefully. In the snyder trilogy, Superman is in action for most of his flying scenes. It's nice to see Kal just casually flying over the city he protects.
This is the best Superman movie of all time in my opinion. I'm still amazed by the stunning visuals of this movie, it looks better than movies today do. And the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal as well.
He is truly alone! The performance of Brandon Routh conveys this. Henry Cavill would generate a different feeling, because his acting persona I have seen in all 3 of his performances is different. It's not a swipe at Cavill. Routh has a different acting approach in his interpretation. A bit more stoic & self reflective. Many people, I'm sure prefer Cavill. I see a little of myself in Routh's performance, as many do.
Cavil’s Superman was meant to be a bit more realistic, a bit more human, and how someone from a different planet would try to adapt or figure himself out on our world, a man just trying to do the right thing generally
This was my favorite superman movie......hard to explain, we all know this stuff is just a movie but, it seems more real or life like than the other superman shows.
the first scene, gives you an idea what would be like to be in a city where Superman watches over you and you just spot him flying a few meters above your, after a hard day's work, such a feeling, and maybe some day, you could find him on the street an say : "hi!"
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I look at it being what the third Chris Reeve movie should have been, sort of returning it to quality. Brandon Routh did a good job portraying Clark and Superman, I wish they'd made another one after this. Man of Steel is fine, but done in a totally different style. Both of them work best when staying true to the character. @@emmanueloluga9770 So here's another troll, years after the fact, telling those who appreciate SRs, he's right and all of us are wrong. Needless except to get some attention.
This is how Superman movies should be. Makes you feel the loneliness of Superman in a human world. Flying to the storm clouds alone, his father's voice reminds him that he is not a human being like them ..Man i love this movie so much.
Zack Snyder make superman's flying like everything is fast. But Bryan Singer make superman's flying so smooth and fast at the same time, it depends on every situation. Believe or not this movie's visual is so smooth in 2006 😊😊 I love it!
I know this movie takes it on the chin from many due to the thin plot and nebulous motivations of the antagonist, BUT…Routh hits a HR in the role. He’s likable, interesting, and you actually care what happens to him. The score is phenomenal, and the visuals are top notch. But most importantly…the screenwriter and director understand Superman. They get it. They know what he represents and how to convey that feeling to an audience. In the genre, this movie is a gem and tragically underappreciated.
His best scene is near the end, where he looks upon his sleeping son. You see the pain in his eyes during his little father - son speech as he accepts that both Lois and Jason are exactly where they need to be.
This movie and this scene made me realize how lonely Superman really is. To be a savior to a world that will never fully accept him or understand him. Like joker said, soon as the chips are down they will cast you out
Anyone realize that this version of Superman goes through a lot!!! Even pain and suffering and not having his woman with him!!! He was hurt and still had to keep that responsibility of protecting people and the WORLD, because he has gifts! Reminds of Spider-Man 2!!! This movie gives you peace, venerability, power, strength !!! He even lifts airplanes islands, the writers just understand who this character really is!!! I hate the recasting BS!!!! This is my Superman! Ps- super sonic boommmmm was amazing !!!!!!
The movie is is underrated and hated by many people because too many people like to see violence and rage on screen. This is one of the best films I have ever seen because I prefer to understand characters and for characters to have aubstance. It is also the character that was developed in the classic Christopher Reeve films and Smallville. It shows Clark/Superman to be a person. I don't watch films like the Avengers etc because I don't like the darkness and the unnecessary violence in the films. I think we need to understand that fighting evil does not need to be violent but through understanding.
TKR ALVA. Sorry I'm 2 years late but reading your comment made me realise that not everything has to be violent in superhero movies. Yeah sometime its cool but like you said we should understand the characters personality and get to understand more about them. And I'm not just talking about superman, I'm talking about other characters in other movies
I know this feelings what superman is going through . not to be accepted because you are different . it's hard to find a girl to love you because you are nice person and different . it seems girls of today they don't like nice people , they think is very boring . superman suffer from that a lot .
The most unrealistic part of this movie about a flying invincible space alien is the huge lakeside mansion, with a private plane, right outside Metropolis, owned by two news reporters.
Excellent move this was … one of my favourite moments of Superman returns… it shows you Superman has a human heart! It gets hurt like our own by the woman he loves .
I love that in this movie, Superman actually saves and protects the citizens of Metropolis, and not just people he knows. He showed grace, humility, restraint and determination. I still think he looked too young, and Kate Bosworth was not great. But damn, it had some great Superman moments.
This scene actually made this movie endeared to critics. Several pointed out that his lone flight in silent darkness over the city summed up the essence of his never ending watch and it was a scene done with utmost subtlety both defining the character and making for a silently striking realistic visual.
it was powerful. kal-el has always struggled with it. even tho you've been raised as ahuman being...you're not one of them. and it shouldn't matter. he's loved regardless of whether hes from somewhere else or not, whether he's different or not but it still shows that people from somewhere else or people who are different, still feel like something is missing.
Dont forget that it's a sequel to Chris Reeves first 2 movies. So Jonathan is dead and his other father sacrificed his last energy to give his powers back.
I know I am in the minority, but I really like this movie. I liked how they paid homage to the Christopher Reeve movies and made it a continuation of those rather than do a whole reboot. I also loved the Marlon Brando lines that were in it and how Kal-el repeats some of the lines to his son. There were some things that weren't done well in the movie, but I felt overall that they did a good job with it.
A lot of people will say this feels like a superman movie whilst trashing the newer version of superman, put it this way this movie already had Reeves version behind it so it made sense why it was the way it was it didn't need to start up a story or new chapter of him being superman it just was that whilst keeping the Reeves touch in the movie. On top of this man of steel a lot of people hating on it because it's different, man of steel is a more realistic take on the character and shows us what would happen if in fact an alien did come to earth do. That is why Iove man of steel and love this movie too both are great in their own ways. Man of steel was trying to retell the story of superman whilst returns already had the story of superman behind it with already 2 movies behind it as superman 3 and 4 just got deleted from existence as they were poor movies.
I love this scene, it's nothing much and at the same time it's a lot, it's a composition that brings it very close to reality, I think whenever Superman would fly around the city, people would always go to and look. Too bad the last Superman movies are all action, action and more action.
There's nothing wrong with Cavil's accent. Both performances were good. Routh did more of a straight Reeve impersonation which was nice after so long without a Superman film but Cavil has made the role his own and is doing a great job.
Looks like your wish will come true. Brandon Routh is reprising his role as Superman in Crisis on Infinite Earths as the Kingdom Come version of Superman.
Such a nice part of the movie. He stalks lois. Checks up on her. Then he flys off when she says she never loved him. You could see the hurt in his eyes. He has feelings too. He's resting above earth and then shoots off at blazing speed. Beautifully made movie. Loved every part of it. Man of steel was crap!
I don't understand why this movie didn't get the best ratings. This has more depth, heart and meaning than the others. Brandon Routh did a phenomenal job!
A lot of people on the CW aren’t very good actors, i mean it probably has to do with the dialogue they’re given all the time but I don’t doubt Brandon Routh will be able to play Ray Palmer and Superman at the same time
brandon was my favorite superman, reeves was before my time but still incredible but this movie holds a lot of nostalgia for me, and ages like fine wine, cavil is good but just lacks a good script
Having previously seen Smallville, and thus knowing how much Jonathan Kent feared Clark and his powers being known in the world, if he could see his son now, flying casually over civilians while they oohed and aahed over him, he would probably have a heart attack. WAIT -
The flying shots are the best in this Superman movie. In Man of Steel it's too loud or fast for the viewer, the SFX weren't as good in the original Superman (1978). But in this movie they have the technology to show it properly, and they make good stylistic choices as well. He flies gracefully and effortlessly, and it's nice to look at.
A rather weird script but Brandon Routh is by far the most underrated Superman ever to me. He absolutely nailed it and deserves so much more respect and credit he's had so far. Especially when you know Dana Reeve has met him saying:"He looks so much like Chris". That is Superman all right.
Yet in that scene in MOS, where Kal-El is standing in the gravity beam...You can actually see Chris Reeve's face in Henry's. For both they did excellent casting of Kal-El.
@@paulmichaelfreedman8334 Cavill fans jut want him to be the successor of Reeve while he's not. And that scene lacks the curl. Reeve has always had the curl, always, Cavill never. Routh had it too and Cavill is 4 inches too small.
People's houses in movies are always so huge. It's like we're all supposed to think we're supposed to be rich or something, or if characters live in meager houses, it would all suddenly not mean anything.
I like Henry Cavill as Superman. He looks like the modern day Jim Lee Superman jumped out into real life but I thought Snyder’s take on the character was just wrong. Some of the lessons he got from his parents were just off and even could be perceived as negative or morally ambiguous. “Be their hero. Be their saviour or be none of it. You don’t owe them anything” That’s very different from the mantra of Spider-Man “With great power comes great responsibility” and even the Superman 1978 “I don’t what It is son, but you are here for a reason!”. Even the Smallville show’s parents expanded on this even further with very wholesome lessons. As complicated as their life got. They were still very moral people. That’s Superman. A positive moral compass. He knows what is right and wrong, even when others don’t. They look to him for inspiration and truth. He’s not Batman where his morals and code allows him to go into the grey areas of morality to accomplish his objectives. We don’t see that in BvS. Superman says “Nobody stays good anymore...” That’s a Superman essentially acknowledging that his morality is on the verge of breaking or can be broken. That’s not a Superman we would ever see from Brandon Routh or Chris Reeve.
Brandon Roth will play superman again and ray palmer the atom in the CW network's arrowverse crisis on infinite earths crossover episodes imagine the reaction when the ray ,kal-el, kara and everyone else see the two of them together
One thing they added to Superman Returns that you never see in other renditions is something from the comics, his eyes. Brandon Routh wore blue contact lenses that made his eyes an exceptional shade of blue. In the comics, Superman's eyes are supposed to be strikingly blue, and it seemed like the Superman Returns crew were drawing attention to his eyes as much as possible.
Kinda creepy if knowing someone with the power to erase human race (said Affleck's Batman) stalking u or ur beloved one. It is better if he just come by rather than earing private conversation on purpose
