Francesco Cilea Io son l'umile ancella from Adriana Lecouvreur Soprano: Kiri Te Kanawa Wellington Concert New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Conducted by John Hophins
I only have to hear again how magnificent her voice is, and how technically perfect she sings to remind myself why I named my cat Kiri!!! (My little Kiri is 19 years old and ironically has very little to say in the vocal department - even her purr is a mere vibration)! But I so love my Kiris❤❤❤❤❤
Always in the head voice. And the tone is exquisite. She knew how to sing -- all the way through, and she was not appreciated nearly enough during her professional career. Bravissima, Dame Kiri!!
I haven't heard a modern soprano (post 1970) besides Margaret Price that sings this with as much musicality and warmth of tone and stylistically on the money as Kiri in this performance.
What a lovely voice and presence. There was so much Strauss and Mozart during her time, in which she shone like an emerald . But I dream she had sung this role. And Louise. Thais.
Ecco....una meraviglia del creato! Bella e grande artista. Il tempo per queste persone dovrebbe fermarsi.......ma ci rendiamo conto davvero del suo canto straordinario? È sufficiente vedere la bocca mentre fraseggia per comprendere che il suo è davvero bel canto.
No need to be so nasty! This is a fine performance! She may not be the most expressive singer but she has had a very successful career because she has one of the most beautiful voices. This must be close to 30 years ago, but she is still singing well!
MAGNIFICA KIRI....MAGNIFICA SUTHERLAND.....CABALLE Y TODAS LAS GRANDES......PERO ESTA ARIA ES Y SIEMPRE SERA PARA ......APRILLE MILLO....QUE LE DIO LA FUERZA QUE EL ARIA CONTIENE CON TODO EL SENTIDO Y LA FUERZA ADECUADA .
@tebaldicallas Just listened to the 1955 rendition by the great Tebaldi. No question about it. Wonderful! Kiri's rendition resonates with me more however. I'm not saying it's "better." Merely that I'm more moved by it in my guts.
My god, she does it better than anyone! Other great sopranos sound "choppy" compared to Kiri when performing this aria. The fluidity she achieves is astounding. It feels utterly seamless. As if the entire aria was sung all in one breath. Of course it wasn't, as any student of voice knows. But it feels that way. And if one looks at the meaning of the lyrics, one is even more blown away. Her fluid style perfectly expresses the meaning of the words.
Easy on the ears, not so easy on the eyes. That dress must have been visible from the Moon! However, despite her dubious sartorial choices, she is the epitome of vocal chic.
But even the great Tebaldi doesn't come across as seamless as Te Kanawa. And Tebaldi does it in under 3 minutes. So I don't think it's really the overall length. After all, everyone, professional and amateur, takes breaths every couple of measures. Nobody really sings an aria from beginning to end in one continuous breath. I was merely talking about subjective feel.
