RUSH has never.....ever.....been a glam band. They are architects of music. Different time signatures, shifts, breaks in the songs.....If normal 80’s rock was High School, RUSH we’re doctoral studies. You need to respect this band. YYZ starts off with Morse code on the triangle playing The letters YYZ in Morse code and incorporated it into the song in 5/4 time.

No it is YYZ, which is the identifier for Toronto, Canada. Where all the members of the band came from. I went to the same school most of them did, I remember them playing a school dance ( before they became rock stars ). YYZ Toronto, Canada.
@kosys5338

Yea, I can accept that. But aviation would not identify like that. They would use Toronto tower. But yes that would be the proper way to pronounce YYZ.

OMG!..lmao!! :) .... What kind of super human drumming, does poor Neil Peart have to do to get a tip of the hat or kindly nod in his general direction..? Hello. .! this is probably the greatest rock drummer in history of everything ever ,anywhere ever..!! Only surpassed by The GOAT John Bonham, but closely followed by Danny Carey .. .. Neal Ellwood Peart is a living legend. .!! :) Or am I the only one here who thinks this ..:)???

Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said: "Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be - namely me, I guess."

@antoinettepriest

what you really should know is that Rush was a band that way back when you didn't really want to admit that you liked, they didn't fit the mold. It is so technical and far fetched and without a doubt super complicated and also masculine. Rush makes music for rock and roll technicians. It is what they do. This band is truly unique in the way that they approached rock and roll music. At any given time there were never more than three members creating these masterpieces. You have one of the most innovative bass guitarist's, Synth, and Vocals in Geddy. You have a super under appreciated lead guitar and lead vocals ever in Alex. Then you have the master Neil. He is in my opinion the greatest rock drummer of all time, but who am I. Oh and he also writes most of the lyrics.

I don't think that is true, I had Rush albums and did not have to conceal them, as did many people I know. Back in the 70s people who liked rock freely liked Rush, there was no hiding, and they certainly did fit the mold because back then there was no mold, with so many diverse groups appearing. There were also many "complicated" groups around, e.g. Yes, who were really 'far fetched' and technically brilliant, as well as uplifting. I remember at a rock nightclub I used to frequent, one night they played 2112, which excited a lot of people, and we got up on the dance floor. Rush were part of the mainstream rock scene back in the day, the same as any other group.

Two seperate Mark Twain novels there... Tom Sawyer was more about Twain's memories of growing up in Missouri in the early 1800s and is more straight humor and fun. Huckleberry Finn is a separate book, which includes the story of him rescuing his slave friend Jim. It is a pretty deep look at racism, slavery, and social indoctrination's affects on a kid. I know that is not the whole of the discussion... But Huck Finn is generally regarded as the greatest American novel and maybe needs a shout out... Read it or get a good audio book version, you won't regret it. Tom Sawyer is also good, but less deep in nature. They are also excellent books for kids. I read Tom Sawyer with my Dad when I was like 7 or 8.

But there are exceptions...Jason Isbell is a fantastic songwriter, he's Americana/Country, had a #1 Billboard Country album in 2015 for Something More Than Free. @rogersanderscustoms8121

I picked "Circumstances" because of it providing a different style of Rush from their storytelling years. Yeah, I can see the case for 2112 or "Natural Science" and "Jacob's Ladder from Permanent Waves. I had considered "The Trees" but it's a wildly popular song among us Rushians. But even as popular as it is "Passage To Bangkok" would work, too.

I've been listening to this song since it first came out. In fact, it was this song that got me into listening to RUSH, and RUSH ultimately becoming my favorite group for a couple of decades. I must have heard this song a 100 times, but while listening to your conversation, something popped into my head. I've always felt like the verse(s): The world is, The world is Love and Life are Deep Meant just what you said. The world is made up of life and love, and that's deep. But it just occurred to me that they may be referring to something more like what's taught in meditation: The world IS. Is simply exists... it is what it is. On the other hand... Love and Life are deep. A call to not make things unnecessarily complicated... which encompasses the way that Tom Sawyer lived... the drifted down the river, taking each day as it came and just making the best of it... the world was simple and he just lived in whatever it was. However, there is an acknowledgement of the complexity of how we can define and try to manage and control things, how we model our life, how we attempt to understand love. Just a thought... but I think I like it... adds another layer of depth to an already awesome set of lyrics.

Their concerts are fucking AMAZING!!! For a three piece band, those boys make a lot of noise!! The bassist/vocalist/keyboardist, Geddy Lee, plays bass, keys and sings ALL AT THE SAME TIME LIVE!!! Also, I heard you guys mention lyrics... Funny thing, most of their lyrics are written by their drummer, Neil Peart!! If you guys are ever looking for an AMAZING music documentary to watch.... I really enjoy your unconventional, unfazed approach. Subscribed! You should try out "Red Barchetta" from the same album. It is very interesting, both musically and lyrically.

I am so glad you have seen what the rest of us have been talking about with Rush!!! They have been around for more than 40 years, so there is bound to be some that you don't like as much. You really should check out Rush playing YYZ in Rio, it is a great example of them playing live. I would also suggest The Pass, Bravado, and 2112. Nice work!

In the December 1985 Rush Backstage Club newsletter, drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said: "Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be - namely me I guess."

The M-16 was made by Colt Firearms in Hartford, Ct. in 1969 when I had mine issued to me. We did call them Mattel's because of all the plastic they were made of, and because of how light they were, but they were not made by Mattel.

For another Rush song I KNOW you'll love is the instrumental YYZ. Listen to either the studio version or the Live in Rio version. Both are amazing!

Glad you enjoyed Tom Sawyer! Try doing Rush Animate, live video version from the R30 Tour shot in Frankfurt. If you do any more Rush try and do live video versions, it'll impress you much more. And don't forget about Dream Theater - The Enemy Inside.. It'll blow Vin away.

Wrong.. "His mind is not for rent"? About America? "Not Arrogant"? America? Nope, so many lyrics don't fit that interpretation.

Nature and Physics I know all about that. That who ended the wars again.. Canada!!! Btw that isn’t even what the lyrics are about you dope. Look it up. Neil said it wasn’t really about anything specific.

Joe Hogan - That's precisely why I thought 2112 would be a good idea; a theme album where the entire Side A is a single story, in which the musicianship and lyrical brilliance are sure to be appreciated.

Have you guys done REO Speedwagon yet? I seen this band well after their prime and was in utter awe at their performance and craftsmanship in their songs. "Take it on the Run", "Keep on Loving You", "Time for me to fly", and so many more of their songs are utter classics. I would love to see one of your guys thorough analysis on REO. Congrats on your new found stardome!

They wouldn't exist because the inspiration of that song was Lee's mom's experience in a concentration camp. I'm guessing the commentor meant if she hadn't survived that, there would be no Rush.
