I'm a Kiraat tribe also mentioned in Mahabharata. We are nature worshippers and we have people who get possessed by daiva and souls & dress up somewhat like those shown in this movie. I didn't believe much in our culture but this movie has awakened interest in me to know about my culture and tradition in deeper way, thanks to Rishab Shetty 🙏🙏

You missed one point the forest officer has some personal grudge over the festivals and temples. He is shown as "Nastik" and that's why he was doing this intentionally to end this festival. He was a non believer of God but other police officers were shown as good and they kept their faith in this culture. But in the end the Police officer did go through a transformation and even the God was impressed by his duty when he calls the police officer and keep his hand over his chest. This is not a movie, this movie felt like a reality.

When Shiva ( Rishab Shetty) comes as village deity , and he asked for his villagers safety and security . Forest officer ( Kishor ji as muruli) eventually they are became friends ❣️🔥🙏😎 . Village is under his duty. Climax main jab village deity muruli aur villagers ka hath ho hath rakh deta hai, marvelous scene. Tears in my eyes. And background sing varaha roopam devai va rishtam .

Many south Indian stars have praised the movie but still no one from Bollywood has come forward to compliment the movie, they were head over heals to praise LSC though

When shiva hunts wild boar (wild pig) in the jungle, his father and the magical wild boar come in his dream! as Panjurli demigod has Varaha Roopam… that was amazing!

Whenever shiva does things against daiva prati immediately he gets nightmares. The crying scene Shiva sees in jail is of his dad for Guruvas death

KANTARA is a Divine experience. I have lived in a South Indian village and I could identify with the culture depicted in the movie. GRAM DEVATA or Village Deity is common in many villages in South India. Revisiting Village Festivals through this movie was a nostalgic journey.

Panjurli/ bhuta / daiva is the wild boar spirit which is one of the spirits worshipped in coastal karnataka . This is the concept of animism where animal spirits are worshipped as protectors of villages/ forest land and there is also the concept of spirit possession where the spirit possess a human being and through it , justice is done . There are different types of worship of these bhutas , one of them is kola where the Demi god is worshipped through dance . Guliga or kshetrapala is a demigod that is supposed to be the keeper of boundaries of forest land ‘/ villages. He supposed to be more fierce than panjurli and his form of justice is more violent . There was supposed to be some battle between panjurli and guliga but they were asked to live like siblings and hence they are worshipped together .This movie is based on Kundapura animist worship culture . This animist worship is very common across India and is done in almost all villages . So while Gramdevta is the god of the village and also protect villages , the spirit form which protects the villages is animist form of worship . In Maharashtra , the guliga is worshipped as kala bhairava which is the fierce form and animist worship takes different forms like warli community worships Wagh(lion spirit) daiva. The spirit possession is called “aangat aale “ in Maharashtra . This concept of Hinduism has actually helped so much in forest conservation and helps us to live in harmony with nature 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Pratik Bhau - in the last scene Shiva actually dies but guliga enters his body just before the death and delivers justice. The villagers identified guliga dev and give him his favourite food. The daiva continues to extend Shiva's life until the next bhoot kola which is shown in the next scene. There Shiva (daiva) after ensuring good bond between the forest officer and villagers, goes to the same place where his father disappeared 20 years back. Then both disappear. You might have noticed Leela was pregnant with Shiva's child who would continue the tradition of daiva aradhana.

One more hidden symbolism is - the zamindar is representative of Hiranyakashipu who tortures his mentally disabled son . At the end he kills all innocent villagers representing pain to Mother Earth. When it reached peak Daiva entered Shiva’s body took the varaha form (last bhootakola song represents that as well) and kills zamindar aka hiranyaksha thereby restoring dharma.

I also liked that Panjurli at the end entrusts the people’s welfare and responsibility over to the forest officer (just signs used to indicate it). I really like this…I feel this has a de-colonizing effect. It’s not administration vs. people (colonial mindset) but rather both administration and people working hand-in-hand.

The climax gave me goosebumps it can only be experience in theatres. The forest officer to me looked like Dwyane Johnson.

Bhai hamare yahn Uttarakhand me exactly same devta wali pratha ha. Me to is movie se 100% relate kar paya. Kahn kahn pe to gaon ki yaad hi a gayi thi. Lekin ek baat Maine kabhi nahn sochi thi ki is theme pe koi movie banayega aur usse bada ki log movie ko full support kar rahe han. Absolutely amazing work by Rishab Shetty bhai. 🙏

I think you missed below very important points in your explanation 1.Heros father who initially perform as daiva...will disappear (kantara title card)..when landlord challenges about his sanctity..and in the and both father and son will join(kantara end title card.epic climax) 2.hero will have different dreams whenever he does wrong things

Totally agree!! Bollywood lens Vs Bharatiya lens can be easily seen in the treatment, story and characters of Tumbadd Vs. Kantara. While the bollywood version Tumbadd takes us through a lens filled with horror and abhoration, It's characters and the treatment of women fits all the bollywood stereotyes. Kantara, in it's own words, is a Darshana! It can be only experienced. It potrays eveything Bharatiya with such respect and devotion. The characters and story are nuanced and multi layered, so are the struggles and plot angles. The love/bonding between various relations, and a village, that is our backbone is potrayed beautifully. The role of devotion and traditions centered around it take the center stage. I couldnt stop thinking how The native Americans might have been seen and understood by Columbus, who felt that a Papal Bull gave him all the powers to "demonize and decimate an entire culture and then later preach to civilize them." Infact, this feeling might have been infinitely stronger in case of Hindu Dharma. And it still probably is !!

This Movie is pure gem .... Hat's off for the makers to take up a subject like this . Each and every frame , every twist and turn and relatable (believable) characters and their casting , I am just speechless . Somewhere read that the budget is only around 20 crore . Aur yahan 180 crore k remake bantey hain . Hindi dubbing is also good, these type of movie deserve 500crore .

Good review but you did not cover the aspect of Shiva. He was traumatised by the disappearance of his father and never wanted to be Bhoota kola like his father as he thinks that he will disappear like his father. His cousin became the bhoota kola and lead a clean life with no alcohol as daiva enters his body. Shiva always got dreams in the form of subtle hints of divinity but he tried to avoid them. The death of his cousin and the reason for his death makes him embrace the divinity

By end of this movie you will feel and start believing the rituals and culture of that village Really well made

In the beginning, The forest officer (DRFO) was nasthik and makes fun of the village culture but later changes himself as he too goes through problems

Sir, I'm Glad you mentioned Gulika as well. Most of them missed that it was the aggressive Gulika in the Climax asking for food and killing the Adharmis. Even in reality Gulika is said to be always hungry and so people offer him animals(Chicken/goat).

Kantara which shows our desi games like kambala as well as it represents our culture very proudly ❤. This film is so pure and divine 🙏. Only a selfless and divine soul can do justice to this role. You missed few very important points Shiva's father's role is also played by Rishab shetty. After confrontation with zamindar who questions him if he has Daiva or dancer he goes into forest and disappears. And keeps appearing in Shiva's dreams whenever he needs him or when he is wrong. Finally during the last Kola he calls Shiva from the forest and they reunite both Divas in the circle of fire.

End me Shiva ko bhi pata chalta hai uske papa kese dev k sath vilin ho gye kyun ki woh bhi waise hi vilin ho jata hai... Aur uski wife ko pregnant dikhate hai matlab ab dev uske bete me aayenge... Yeh Mera analysis hai... Thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Prateek you missed to cover that whenever demigods do any miraculous thing like Shiva father cursing the landlord and shiva coming back from death and killing evils, demigod along with the person disappears. Both the gods were happy to see village future in right direction. Key message was that Administration, Environment and People should live is harmony such a way that none is harmed.

There were alot of hidden details director left for audience. Like the demigod in form of pig , how he left the mashal for Shiva means he helped shiva and at the end how his wife was pragnent and he run into the forest and disappeared with the previous person who played demigod and how he get visuals of demigod maybe because he was the only one standing in that fire circle when he was small running behind his father ....

Because 1 scene me jab uske pitaji gayab hote hai to unme panjurli dev hote hai tab guliga dev wahi reh jaate hai..... Last me jab shiva ke andar guliga dev aate hai uske baad done dev ek dusre se milte hie film me dikhaya hai. Ek dev panjurli the aur e dev guliga the.... Aur shayad shiva gayab isiliye hua because wo pehle hi mar gaya tha aur dev ne use thodi jivan jyaada diya jisse wo apna vandh aage badha sake aur bhota kola ki pratha chalti rahe... Jab karya sampann hua tab dev ne use apne paas bula liya.

I haven’t seen the movie yet but based on what u have told in the review it seems the movie kind of glorifies the Indian tradition of man living in sync with nature…taking care of forests and not exploiting them. They take resources from forest but in return also take care of them as conservators. This is in stark contrast to western view of saving forest where it has to be a restricted space and man can either save or destroy forests. For western philosophy, it is all black and white but for Indians there is always a middle path.

The part that was not dubbed is native tulu language. Since this folklore is based on tulunadu culture, Kudos to Rakshit shetty for maintaining it's authenticity by not touching it. Also heavily spoken in such fast face would be extremely hard to even tranlate

They didn't dub the deity prayers in Hindi as the Hymns or prayers by priest may be misinterpreted during dubbing such is the respect for deity and their language .

I too watched the yeasterdays 7:30 show. Man what a movie 🔥🔥very from the starting the scenes of daiva as gram devta is the best🔥🙇‍♂️never seen in my whole life 💯 #kantara❤ plss do watch it in theaters 🙌. The bgm, music, songs, scenes, acting everything was just epitome of madness🙇‍♂️no one can do it. The scenes of village r just soo soo soothing can't believe just made on 15 crs🥵 the action scenes,cinematography can't believe I watched yesterday seems like now also im in theatres😌. So my single request to bhaandwood to dare not to remake it ull end up being abused by us. U just keep dancing girls, beer, drugs that's all is expected from uh. And mainly #Rishabshetty what a gem of a person u r 💎. Nice video sir... I m very happy that movies like kantara is being made... unlike the woke film makers, who show non sense in the name of women empowerment where the female is highclass working women who gets physically involved with both men and women, drinks and smokes everyday and to add sympathy she finds out that she has some disease that can't be cured and etc etc etc... to add a motivational factor she overcomes the disease and ends up with a nice guy who she never deserved.

I like the climax but I feel it would have been more effective if they had stopped at Guliga killing the landlord and vanishing into the forest with the landlord's body. That would have heightened the mystic element.

I think because of the god Guliga is representing lord Vishnu's Varah form, so the landlord is characterized as Hrinyaksha. The way Hiranyaksha tried to steal Bhudevi.Similarly, the landlord also tries to grab the land of the villagers. Then Lord Varah comes and kills Hiranyaksha and establishes Dharma and here Lord Guliga also does the same by killing the landlord.

Par vo aisa na kar ke, har ek kritya karta hai jo usse nahi karna chahiye jaise ki - jangli jaanwaro ka shikaar karna, ped ki katayi karna, madhya paan karna, zameendaar ki chaakri karna (torch pakadna), vagera vagera. Panjurli har baar usse chetavni Dene ka prayatna karti hai, aranya usse kuch keh ne ka prayatna karti hai, par wo ye sab sunne samajh ne ke liye tab tayyar nahi rehta. Jis samay wo zameendaar ke ghar main pravesh karta hai tab wo Shiva na ho ke guliga ke liye madhyam ban chuka hota hai, isiliye wo kehta hai ki meri shuddhi ho chuki hai. Iske pehle Wale drushya main usko aranya pradesh main wo gyan prapt hota hai jo usko samjha deti hai ki sahi kya hai aur galat kya hai. Ek baar Mann ki shuddhi hone ke baad usse sirf us ghadi ki prateeksha hoti hai jaha kshetrapaal guliga ka nirdharit samay tey hua hota hai. Aur har bhoota kola ke pehle, kalluti panjurli , guliga ya anya daiv ho, jo banda in he apne main pravesh ke liye bulatey hai, unhe apni shuddhi karni hota hai, Mann aur tann dono se shuddh hona hota hai. Rishab Shetty ne in choti choti baaton ka bahut dhyan rakha hai.
