I understand what you're saying, but if there was no prejudice involved on her part, why mention the parent and child respective ethnicities? Why not just say "there goes an ill-behaved kid in need of corporal punishment", since corporal punishment seems to be what she believes in? Why did she feel that the races were important in this specific situation? There is no way her comment was not in some way, shape or form ignorant or prejudiced (either towards the white dad or towards the black kid or both), not so much because of the "monkey" comment, but because of everything else she said.

Many people in my culture also will make such statements towards a very active child with no malice. In my experience with my father, all he needed to do was look at us and we would stop doing whatever it was we were doing. Heaven forbid if you didn’t, because he would beat. But guess what, we learned to be respectful of our elders.

Let me start by saying that I do not defend, agree with, or defend her statements. BUT growing up Mexican American in SoCal in the 1980's most of those comments in the Latino community would not be immediately taken as racist. Again not defending!!! When a little kid jumps around and the parents don't "control" their child the monkey term is common and it is more about behavior and not skin color. AGAIN NOT DEFENDING. It is an unfortunate carry over of old school mentality where whooping a misbehaving child was how "it was done" Mexicans believe in a frim hand traditionally speaking. BUT as a public figure that is totally unacceptable and she should step down, I fully agree and understand the outrage of the community. The point I'm trying to make is while her comments are in very poor taste her comments in the Mexican community are more about being a soft parent and not about race. Just providing context, not that it makes it any better..

I’m black (Haitian to be specific) and with being raised by Caribbean parents/family, I’ve also heard the term monkey being used both as endearment (not in this case) and in reference to a child misbehaving. Even exactly within the context of the story. Why are you jumping around like a monkey? It was the first thing I thought of. I think this newer generation doesn’t do a great job at compassion for the fact that previous generations were raised very differently (spanking children was verrry normal, even teachers contributed lol) and our perception of their comments may or may not be accurate. Unfortunately, since she had two statements that could be perceived as racist (no explaining the white comment she meant that 100%) there’s not much wiggle room to feign ignorance here. Also, anyone else remember the story of the monkeys jumping on the bed as kids? One fell off and bumped his head?

There's definitely ingrained racism in her vitriol. Anti-black/indigenous was officially policy in Mexican propaganda since the Revolution, and I've seen it in some older family (who are also dark).
