This video explains the eleven icons that are a part of Sandra Kaplan's Depth and Complexity Model. I have also created an app for the iPhone or iPad that can be downloaded for free. Click on the link below and follow these directions:

Obviously this covers what I do in the classroom, exposing students to a standard way of solving different problems while also encouraging workable, alternative methods of solution, including applications of mathematical processes in other fields like the sciences, social sciences (like economics) and in business

Kaplan's Depth and Complexity Model-11 pictures- 1 language of the discipline---- vocabulary, 2 details or parts of something 3, patterns-repeating chunks, 4. unanswered questions, 5. Rules of classification -rules apply to the topic 6, pros and cons- the good and bad -ethical issues 7. Changes over time- 8. patterns of change over time-trends 9. across the disciplines- across subjects 10. different perspectives- look through someone else's eyes. 11. The big ideas--- what are the big ideas for studying a topic.
