Where to get Japanese kitchenware: Kappabashi! A look round Tokyo's Kitchen Town at an amazing variety of stores selling Japanese knives, ceramics, plates, bowls and all kinds of utensils.
Even if you're not into cooking, Kappabashi's an interesting place to look round. The variety is amazing. There's so much beautiful tableware, chopsticks, bento boxes, and functional food preparation gadgets, pots and pans. If you can think of any specialist item for making Japanese food, it'll be here somewhere. You can find Kitchen Street in north-east central Tokyo, between Ueno and Asakusa - it's an easy walk from Senso-ji, the famous temple. At the end of the video there's also a look a similar place in Osaka called Sennichimae Doguyasuji.

Thank you for a great watch! I'm a keen Japanese cookware collector from Nottingham UK, and I'd love to visit here so much. I visited the Doki shop several times when it was in Wembley, and once to it's new location. It sells amazing Japanese crockery and some cookware. Japan Centre also sells some cookware. I have mainly got my cookware from Amazon and E Bay. The only thing is the customs tax that you have to watch out for. In NYC Korin is an excellent shop, but again it's all the taxes to get your items. Shaun:)

Ah I know Doki Japanese Tableware, they have a stall at Hyper Japan (where I have a stall too!). They've got some lovely tableware, I have a few things from them too. You'd definitely love Kappabashi, there's so much!!

I totally enjoyed this upload. I am a "closet kitchenware geek" and love those things like Japanese bowls (e.g. O-chawan). The chopstick drawer you purchased is very pretty. I want something just like that, too! I could spend hours there in Kappabashi. I always looove your uploads - so informative and home-made feel to them, unlike other bloggers' narcissistic self-promotion in the cyber world! Seriously.

Visited Kappabashi twice last week. A street of temptation alright. We found much to take home with us. Lucky enough to listen in to a chat in one of the knife shops. Buyer from Europe looking for a particular tool. Fascinating. Cliché time. A street that has something for everyone. 😉

This is so fascinating! There is such a depth of variety to choose from. I think the UK might be similar to Ireland in that many of the homeware stores have very 'vanilla' stock - nothing with the character or charm of what you saw.

We knew of this place but didn't make a point of visiting it, even though our hotel was right next to Tawaramachi station! I think I will make a point of going there next time as they seem to have some really interesting things to look at, thank you for showing it! Asakusa is much more interesting than what it seems on google maps etc, so next time we are going to explore it a lot more (weird we didn't do it last time considering it was right near our hotel!)

Thank you for this video I enjoyed very much since I love kitchenware. So I try to visit this street whenever I visit Tokyo. It may be a good idea to check over in your future video the statue of Kappa the imaginary creature, honouring him for saving the community in this neighborhood. In Japan, depending on the item, it is common for shops to display it to allow you to feel and check freely, and to sell you a good and fresh copy from the stock.

@cakeswithfaces

Tbh I didn't look into knife prices too deeply, but there's a whole range in the displays I filmed - from 2,000 yen to 20,000 yen, and I'm sure there are many knives more expensive than that too. There's a huge choice.

Definitely checking this out next month! BTW, we're confused. If we're visiting 1 day in Osaka and two days in Kyoto, do you suggest for us to get a pass? If so, which pass? We'll be visiting the must visits spots there. We're confused if it's better to just use IC cards or buy one of the passes for tourists.
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 5 лет назад
If you’ll already have a Suica card from Tokyo you can use that there (easiest option). It depends what you’ll be doing, but I didn’t use the trains that much in Osaka. You might want a bus pass in Kyoto, however I’m not a fan of buses and was fine walking & using trains/metro. If you have a JR Pass (for getting there from Tokyo) you can use it on JR lines in Kyoto if it’s still valid.
@kookiejeon2897
@kookiejeon2897 5 лет назад
@@cakeswithfaces thank you for replying! I'm leaning to using IC cards as that's what I'm familiar with but I also see lots of ads for various passes like Hankyu, Kintetsu, sightseeing passes and the like so I was thinking if that's better for saving money on transpo if we're going around the tourist spots there haha

There are some sightseeing passes for day trips that save you money; you can get them as well as your IC card (eg I got the Kamakura one for my trip to Enoshima/Kamakura from Tokyo)

What is the cheapest store there? Will they ship if I buy a bunch of things? Do they box up each item if I have to bring back to the hotel? Thank you!
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 3 месяца назад
There are so many stores there that rather than sticking to individual recommendations, really it's best to just wander and browse! Each shop will have different procedures. But generally, shops in Japan will package your purchases safely in a bag for you (Japan's big on packaging). I'm not sure if the shops offer shipping, but you can ship items home from the Post Office, and some hotels will help you at the front desk.

Tip: wear your backpack on the front of your body. :)
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 3 года назад
In other places I wouldn't wear a backpack at all, but crime levels in Japan are very low and pickpocketing as much of a problem. However, I grew up in London, so be assured my valuables are hidden away safely in the depths of my bag and absolutely nothing valuable ever goes in the outside pocket! :-)
@Genmah
@Genmah 2 года назад
@@cakeswithfaces I think the "wear your backpack on the front" tip is for having more control of it in tight spaces, and not bumping it into stuff that can fall over. When I vacationed in Japan, I saw several locals wearing the backpack on the front when on trains, so they wouldn't bump it into other people on the train. And I adapted and started doing the same, really practical! I agree with Japan feeling very safe in terms of crime, feels really nice.

how do you pronounce Asakusa? I've heard two different versions: A-SA-KOO-SA and A-SUCK-SA - are they both correct? If so, what is the difference?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 5 лет назад
I try and go for the Japanese pronunciation for place names (and probably butcher it most of the time!!) but based on the Japanese I've learnt, I'd say it's A-sack-sa. That's based on breaking it down into the hiragana/katakana syllables, and the "ku" tends to be very short, more just "k". Saying "koo" is a western-style pronunciaiton I believe.
