I wanted to try my old 2 year old kapton tape with some aluminum and make a ribbon that i will house in an older design planar push pull variant i made a year ago(Neo v10 videos, not the B&G) also wanted to try this braking track. i will make another one soon without it so we can see if it hurts or benefits from it .. who knows ? :) Building is done in Part 1
Part 2 has a fast dirty measurement and some test with music and what i like and dislike about the design. and a talks about max spl vs xmax and frequency used.

Wow.... this plays lower and sounds better than I would have expected! As a little DIY project it would be really fun to buy one of your kits and build it into a 3D printed or crafted enclosure as a little bluetooth speaker. :D

:) thanks, well dont forget it is not meant to play this low :) i just wanted to show, it still produced some output. compared to a higly tensioned foil, dropping straight after resonance. might put it in a housing for fun sake tomorow see what we can get :) (although a ribbon does not seal completely so not sure what would happen)

Very nice video. Thank you for making it. I purchased a set of David Graebener’s 57 inch Auricle ribbons in 1980 when he was designing for SpeakerLab in Seattle, and have had ribbons in my living room ever since. I would like to follow your progress and am interested in a group buy if that comes to fruition. Subscribed!

You may not know this, but the custom version of the Neo3 sold by GR-Research uses Kapton instead of the standard Kaladex, and uses 10 magnets like the standard Neo3, but when a thick yarn is added to the front, outer slots, like the PDR models, it helps improves the off-axis response, without reducing its sensitivity. As for the damping paper/fabric between the magnets & diaphragm I think its some kind of "non-woven polyester" to help reduce ringing issues.

in this case i indeed knew this :) but thanks anyway! not everyone here might know so. im not advocating kapton to be honest. just something i wanted to try after not using it for such a long time :) i think a slighter lighter foil would be even nicer. but well. this is what it is :) this design is a little different then the GR and the B&G , check part 1 and you will see this oen is a corrugated foil. greetings joppe

@@joppepeelen for sure! Danny chose Kapton for its better thermal properties, but hey it's always cool to see people experimenting with ideas and seeing where it leads. Over on Audiocircle we're looking into the GRS Neo clone products that just launched on Parts Express for much cheaper than the BG counterparts, so far the Neo 3 clone tests well, but the big test will be the Neo 10 clone. Tho Danny has his own version of the Neo 10 in the works as well. But keep up the great work! 🔥🔥🔥

thanks m8 ! But calling it custom is a bit to much credit for GR. its a Chinese copy. if B&G made them and he changed them , it would be custom. in this case he bought them from china. as b&G neo 3's clones, thats why it does not have the damping between the outer magnets
@joppepeelen

@@hoth2112 i thinks thats the only foil the chine supplier sold to be honest. parts express is destroying the market by the looks of it

Wow never would have thought it could play so low. Kapton done good. I rekon kits would be popular. Edit : lol whats with the end of the video?
@joppepeelen
@joppepeelen 4 года назад
well i would not recommend to play a tweeter this low :) unless you use faaaaar more then one :) , for me its just the fact it can is interesting it makes filtering a bit more easy. and if you use lets say 4 you can use them much lower. most planars have there resonance dictate when there is no output at all anymore :( it makes it more easy if someone wants to use a 6db filter to.

@@joppepeelen hi joppe, I have been watching all your videos and I recently made a ribbon that is very good in bass, its deep but not very deep, only at low volumes, . Do u suggest I use a transformer or a resistor. When I increase the volume, it cuts in and out and clips badly

well im not to sure witch one is better :) the ribbon has a smooth rolloff. at the cost of output. and maybe distortion :( i should receive some EMIT K soon so we can see how they compare :) these will match ,my dayton woofers with ease. the current version push pull is -9 db to match them :) so i did not need all that much efficiency in the end. so it all depends on how you want to use them in the end im afraid :(

Hello joppe i know it was a long time ago when you did the rubanoide speakers, why rubanoide are not popular?, hard to drive? , no responsiveness? why did you drop that midrange rubanoide proyect? btw nice tweeter

its the amount of work for the motor and membrane im afraid. :) and to much variables :) and crapy dispersion (unpredictable as all rubas do :()

Kits would be awesome! As well as im planning on building some electrostatic loudspeakers, and was wondering if you had any good learning sites that you would recommend for getting good math/method of procedure/ electrical work in the electrostatic world? Thanks! Really glad i came across your channel!!

@joppepeelen 3 года назад
Not sure what your exactly mean ? life gated FR responses ? since i have a few of most projects i did. (when tweeters are concerned since low and mid are useless in my room) i dont measure above 20khz/24khz. though, since im not interested in those frequencies :(
@atomictraveller
@atomictraveller 3 года назад
@@joppepeelen :) i scanned the video and noticed the spectral analysis of the crossovers, maybe it was a calculation and not a measurement. :) measuring the spectral response of the speaker is often performed by sweeping a sine across the frequencies of interest, or using a single sample impulse (spectrally flat), i'm not familiar with modern resources for doing this so it might be a bit involved. thank you for answering! :)
