I lived in that apartment building when they filmed the movie. During the scene where Daniel and his mom first arrive and he's taking his bike off the car, I was standing on my balcony (says "South" on it). I had been watching them rehearse the scene a few times. When the director said he was ready to shoot, I asked if I should go back inside. He said no, it was okay if I stayed and watched. I wouldn't be seen. And yes, the wooden front gate was just installed for the movie. It was a metal gate before and after.
There's something about the aura of just being in those locations and reminiscing of times past that just hits deep.. If only we could go back in time.. Great video, very nostalgic..
Every day i wish I could just go back to the 80s again (I was born in 72) the 80s and early 90s were a time when I had a lot of dreams and goals.. And today… Fk
If you are a kid growing up in the 2010's 2020's what have you got movie wise apart from Marvel / DCU and Disney remakes very un-exciting times for Hollywood.
For those of us who don't have the time or money to take a trip and visit all these iconic locations....... We kindly THANKYOU sir!!!!! Such a great movie that we still watch today.
For my 40th birthday we rented Golf n Stuff and had a slumber party in the secondary arcade. We got to use the go carts, arcade, golf course and slept in sleeping bags in the building that most of the KK footage was shot in front of. Plan on doing this again once covid subsides and if they still have the slumber party rental option. It's mostly meant for kids, but I am one. A kid of the 80s forever.
I saw Karate Kid with my dad and a bunch of other kids from my tae kwon do class. We were all laughing because we went direct from TKD to the theater, and we were still dressed in our TKD uniforms. We were all cheering at the end of the movie. Great times.
@@80sLife How you doing? I just found out about your channel by far the best , I love how you explained the scenes and play part of them great job!!! Can’t wait for more videos... Give me a tour lol I would love to see this places in person. Stay safe out there and keep up the good work!
@@renesalazar7021 And you crown it by saying you're a Karate Kid Movie Fan WOW ! We all love the movie so much That the spin off has even more fans ... IT'S CRAZY !
sometimes...it also must be annoying seeing a couple of strangers at your doorstep everytime because you just happened to buy a house where a classic movie was filmed...I'm from Brazil and a couple of years ago, a TV crew from Record TV (a Brazilian TV channel) went to Philly to film the Rocky locations and the woman now livng in the Rocky's house in Rocky I and II felt a bit annoyed by their presence and she briefly told that it's usual for her to see strangers photographing her house...it must seem awesome at first, but as time goes by, it must be something invasive... I don't know if you know something in Portuguese, but the video's here below (@ 5:59): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iauM8O7Ni8M.html
@@aSome1 Yep true but why would you buy a ex-movie house if you are going to then complain when it gets attention. Get a normal house otherwise there are tons to choose from.
I would love it. Even better would be if someone converted the apartment block into martial arts dojos. no better advertising than the fact it was on karate kid and cobra kai! each little apartment doing a different style. can cool off in the pool after training.
I loved the lockers detail! Lockers were a huge part of school life then. Lots of social activity in front of them...and secret notes slipped in the slots when you weren't there ;)
Oh my God I remember that too!!! Those lockers were important in middle & high school!! And this was before cell phones when people socialized at them!
Great job filming the locations! Season 3 of Cobra Kai was incredible. There's something magical about the whole Karate Kid history and the joy it has brought to so many people.
So true. I was thinking the same thing. The story of Daniel and how he finds happiness, love and a father figure is so compelling, no wonder it was a hit that spawned a sequel. Cobra Kai is the proof of how much fans still love it!
All time Favorite Movie for me , why, I lived in NORWALK as a teenager and use to hang out at GOLF N STUFF, arcade games, bumper cars, golf, water slide, bumper water tubes. We would ride our BMX bikes that night when GOLF N STUFF was closed ,cuz they were filming. NOT knowing it was THE KARATE KID MOVIE !! memories😁😁😁
I believe it was a LIABILITY issue, kids use to get hurt all the time, accidently, that slide would be packed with kids and next to that electrical plant at the back..
I enjoyed this so much. Reminiscing the early 80s, 1984 to be exact when this film was created. I was 16 y/o then. Thanks for sharing. My all-time favorite feel-good movie that I tend to watch yearly. To add, the soundtrack of this movie was just phenomenal..."Cruel Summer" by Bananarama just simply awesome.
@@Booze129 I think that is what happened with the film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" A guy who was about 23 years old and straight out of Journalism school at UCLA or USC (I think) went undercover as an actual high school student for nearly a entire year to write a best selling book which was later excerpted in Playboy Magazine, which then became a bestseller book and big hit for the ages movie. Development The film is adapted from a book Crowe wrote after a year spent at Clairemont High School in San Diego, California. He went undercover to do research for his 1981 book Fast Times at Ridgemont High: A True Story, about his observations of the high school and the students he befriended there, including then-student Andy Rathbone, on whom the character Mark "Rat" Ratner was modeled. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_Times_at_Ridgemont_High
I live on Long Island NY and see "Daniel" Ralph Machio at the NY Islanders hockey games all the time. He's a big fan of the team. Most nights he's just walking around the arena like everyone else is. Very cool dude. He was also a great soccer player in the 80s growing up on Long Island, which is why in the movie he's juggling the ball very well.
I love filming location videos, but yours are superior in every way. The details are great, you don’t just do the major scenes you do locations that are minor as well. I was a teenager in the 80s & love all the films you and your brother do. Keep up the great work. Well done.
I am 47 years old and grew up watching all these movies as a teen. Very good channel i find it so fascinating seeing some of the things still the same as 30 plus years ago.
Thanks for the nostalgic trip down memory lane! It's so cool that the area remains only slightly changed. SO many places from other movies just are so different now that they are hard to even recognize.
HAHAHAHA!!!.. That's awesome, "Nothing creepy about that" how you put yourself in that shot. This is Fantastic. Loving your videos, and your style of going about your edits.
Superb effort in putting this video together, really appreciate it. I stayed at that Hyatt Regency back in 2013 taking some personal time in So Cal. I am a huge fan of the movie and Cobra Kai, and had NO IDEA that hotel doubled as the Encino Oaks Country Club until literally this very second, nearly 10 years after I stayed there. Just looked through some of my pics to confirm.. Unreal....
Very cool. God, I remember when Karate Kid came out, i was 16 and living in New Jersey. I didn't see it in the movie theater i saw it on HBO a year later but that movie was huge. There was a lot of great movies coming out every year in the 80's and The Karate Kid was an instant all-time classic. It's still an incredible movie to watch even after all these years. The chemistry between the actors was magic. Those were the days. God, so many memories. A magical time. What a time to be a teenager.
I used to live in SoCal. I went to the GolfnStuff in Norwalk in the 80s. I live in the SF bay area now. The GolfLands here don't have the same fun environment as GolfNStuff. I also used to accompany my grandmother to Encino where she worked. Encino is an underrated city. It has huge beautiful houses with spectacular views. The house I used to visit was a 15k square foot house with 2 pools, a tennis court, and a huge greenhouse. We would have to walk pass the Jackson's house to get there. Good times. Good video as always 80s Life
Great video! I used to be a long distance truck driver. During mid October 2016 I found myself with a couple days layover in Ontario, California. So I rented a car and visited a bunch of these locations. That had always been a dream of mine! I was 38 years old at the time. I'll be 43 in a week so I guess it's been 5 years ago now. South Seas: There was still an empty lot next door when I was there. The entire apartment building smelled like marijuana really bad and it didn't seem like anyone there spoke English. Lol! The beach: Yeah that was cool to visit. I walked up to the lifeguard tower and watched surfers for a while. The high school: Definitely visited there and saw the sign on the wall. I walked up and touched it with my hands because I just had to. I drove around the block and saw the fields out back. I wish I would have visited his locker. That's definitely a regret. From what I understand that school was also used for the movie Summer School which is another movie I loved. The dojos: I visited both locations. The exterior shots/Orient express location as well as the location of the interior shots which was being used as an exercise place. Orient Express was vacant. Ali's house: I drove past, but didn't get out of the car. It felt really weird driving in an area like that in a piece of junk rental car. I can assure you nobody else in that neighborhood was driving a VW Jetta. But that gate wasn't in front of their house in 2016. There isn't anywhere to park other than in someone's driveway or in front of someone's house. So I didn't get out and walk around people's homes. And I don't think people should really. Golf n Stuff: I believe my visit to this place was at an earlier time. I don't think it was during the same trip. But I played some games and a round of miniature golf with the guy I drove truck with. I don't think he understood the significance of the location. But they had a small poster or something on the wall near the cash registers with pictures and stuff from the movie. I didn't visit the other sites you mentioned, but I did add one location. The bonsai store: From Karate Kid 3. I saw the railroad tracks where Mike Barnes and his buddies were doing donuts in the road and were almost hit by a train. So in total I visited 8 locations. Very happy memory.
Sounds like an awesome adventure. I'm the same age and would definitely enjoy looking at the locations. The apartment smelling like weed made me think there probably wasn't anyone around to reminisce about the movie.
@Adam Chapman it's very strange man. All of my favorite movies from my youth straight up lied to me. And I didn't know any better because I was just some kid living on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere Ohio. Think about all of the movies and TV shows from the 80's that took place in certain locations. For example the movies set in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. The demographics in those movies looked just like the demographics in my small town. Then I get there and I'm the only non-hispanic white dude for miles. It makes perfect sense to me now, but as a kid I had no idea. It's like Seinfeld. Set in NYC and not a single ethnic character. I just think that's kinda funny, but I think it makes some people really mad. Lol! But no, nobody there talks about those movies. In fact they're annoyed by tourists stopping by their apartment building to pose for pictures. They even put a gate up so people can't walk in by the swimming pool and stuff now. When you think about it, those are just financially poor folks living in Reseda just working and trying to keep up with the ridiculous cost of living in SoCal. They really don't want to be bothered.
@danielmoore1232 You bring up a good point. I didn't think about Hollywood bringing in their white cast of stars to these areas. I always assumed the demographic of the neighborhoods changed over time haha. The only movie location I wanted to see was "The last dragon" 1985. I was out in New York in 2018 visiting friends and time slipped by and I didn't get to see filming locations. I'm assuming Brooklyn will be primarily black neighborhood like movie but now I'm not sure lol. Please tell me you have seen the last dragon filming locations in Brooklyn?
@Adam Chapman yeah it's possible some of the demographics in the Valley changed over time. I'm not sure to what degree. But if that's the reason for the almost exclusively white casting in 80's teen movies like Karate Kid, Summer School, etc then it has REALLY changed over the past 30-40 years. But yeah that's possible. And unfortunately I never found myself with any time to do any exploring in New York City. I did drive a truck through Manhattan and drove right past the coffee shop restaurant from Seinfeld. It's much smaller than the show makes it look. I always wished for a layover in Atlanta. I wanted to go visit locations from the first season of the Dukes of Hazzard. The town square from the opening credits, which I hear looks very similar still today. The Boar's Nest which I hear is a church now, and maybe the exterior shots of the Sheriff's office. Just stuff like that. But unfortunately I'm a local truck driver now. I've not left Ohio for like 6 years at this point. I'm just old and fat now. No more exploring for me I guess.
I need to do the same. I still live on Saticoy, but on the other side of The Valley near Lankershim. & I want to visit Ohio & be the only Latino in town 😅
This video was so cool. Thank you so much for posting this. I was 11 years old in 1984 when Karate Kid came out. I've always been a big fan of the Karate Kid movies. This was very fun to watch.
Yo I love your show takes me back to the good days man...even made me cry just remembering when me and my family would eat dinner and sit around the tv to watch these same shows.. keep up the good work 👍
Absolutely amazing video, It’s hard to believe how little some of the locations have changed. Seeing Daniels apartment building and the lobby of the sports arena gave me goosebumps, it’s a pity we weren’t able to see the arena itself.
Next to Herve Attia you are hands down the best and thorough and most importantly a movie loving RU-vidr doing flick location videos I really enjoyed you sharing with fans your researched findings. Btw...your editing is outstanding
I trained at Jun Chong Lankershim (Corba Kai Karate studio in the movie) for many years. My group and I had done a remodel of the interior a couple years before Master Chong gave up the lease. But, it was always recognizable from the inside as that iconic Karate studio. New students frequently mentioned that it looked familiar, before they knew it was the setting of the Cobra Kai.
@@jazzyjeff7431 A lot relied on your parents and I do not think this flick attracted much attention. I saw countless movies underage because I was accompanied by one or two parents. Sudden Impact was an 18 certificate in the UK and I sneaked in with my dad when I was 10. Go figure.
@@Truthseeker1515 Yes that is very true.I thought Karate Kid was popular right from the start here in the US but i can't really remember. If it had anything to do with karate or ninjas,i had to see it.
I've seen this movie countless times and I never even noticed Miyagi stealing that black belt haha! One of the very best Karate Kid location videos on RU-vid! Really appreciate it.
As someone really into urban geography, these videos are fascinating... you can see just how much and how little everyday spaces actually change. Thanks for all this work! My suggestion for another would be Beverly Hills Cop! EDIT: Just saw you DID BHC, heh.
impressive work on this. takes a lot of patience and research to find all the spots and match them up with the movie locations. the creepy stare at the beach was hilarious.
Again, such amazing work done on a location vid. Great detail about every shot. Funniest part was easily your face in place of Daniel's staring at Allie.
Very good video. I enjoyed it all the way through. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this for us. Looking forward to more then/ now filming location videos from you.
Nice work! It is SO COOL to be at the same location where someone was once physically present! I'm not only a movie fan, but a history fan in general, and I think about that kind of stuff when visiting historical sites. From this video I think you may have the same fascination as me lol 😂
That was really sweet. I remember seeing the Karate Kid when it first came out back in 1984. It's pretty cool that you grew up in that area, that must have been fun. Thanks for posting this!
What's cool is that same beach ... was also used in 1991 , in a scene for the movie Point Break . It was where they were around the campfire , and say to Patrick Swayze he is a FBI agent .. Bodhi !
I was 7 when this movie came out and i can still remember doing flying side kicks outside the movies after I watched The Karate Kid with my parents. Watching this video also brings back memories of how many times i used to visit someone in Southern California and makes me feel nostalgic.
Dang! This is my top 1 fave movie in the 80s. Ralph Macchio used to be my fave actor. I'd never get tired of watching this movie so as the sequels. Please do feature the filming location of the movie: "Iron Eagle" starring Jason Gedrick. Thanks!
All these videos you have made are great, I grew up in the 80s and 90s watching all the big Hollywood movies and tv series and was always in awe. its great seeing the locations of all my fav movies, When I eventually am able to visit LA I would love to hire you as a tour guide as I can't imagine the commercial guides doing a better job than this!
Great video bro! I actually didn't know that they filmed those scenes at the chatsworth reservoir lol I lived right down the street from it for almost 20 years lol
What a wonderful upload, I'm now subscribed. The effort you put in to bring us these locations. For me living in Manchester in the north west of England, who was a teenager in the 80s, your location videos you upload are FANTASTIC. Thank you.
The pool in Daniel's apartment building would have given me the wrong impression of California if I lived out of state, but luckily I live in L.A. The movie and this video are great! Wonder if there is a video of Fast Times at Ridgemont High?
