KARATE (LIVE) - BABYMETAL **REACTION** | "THAT'S THE MAGIC OF MUSIC" 

BABYMETAL started in 2010 as a subgroup of a Japanese idol group called Sakura Gakuin. A Metal-loving producer noticed Su's strong voice and thought she'd be perfect for Metal, so he decided to try a fusion of Metal and cute J-Pop, creating a new subgenre called "Kawaii Metal" (kawaii = cute). The girls were 11-13 at the time. They are "celebrating" (in quotes due to f***ing Covid) their 10th anniversary this year. Their music covers a pretty wide range between Pop and Metal, and they often incorporate elements of other genres as well. You'll find traces of Waltz, Hip Hop, Reggae, Ska, EDM, Dubstep and more. The seemingly clashing contradiction of Metal and cuteness is also reflected in the costumes - cute and frilly skirts for the girls, white burial robes and corpsepaint for the band. As typical for J-Pop, the girls have a choreographed dance routine for every single song. One might think this shouldn't work, but it's amazing how well it does. To me it's simply perfect! They are still unique, even after 10 years, and I have never seen a more complete package of entertainment. And the overall positivity they ooze is not very common in Metal. The crowd in this video was a festival crowd, so not everyone was there for BABYMETAL. But they are drawing big crowds in Japan, the biggest one so far was 55.000 (on each of two consecutive nights) at the Tokyo Dome in 2016. While they have become somewhat famous even in the West (their latest album Metal Galaxy topped the Billboard Rock album charts), I still wouldn't say they are popular on a global scale. From what I have heard, even in Japan the majority of people has never heard of them. Kawaii Metal is still very niche, after all. Alright! Nice video! To clear things up for you, BABYMETAL is a Japanese band. They are the originator of the metal subgenre "kawaii metal" or "cute metal" which is a fusion of J-Pop (Japanese pop) and metal. They've been around for 10 years now. They debut in Nov. 28, 2010. The girls are Suzuka Nakamoto (vocal and dance), Yui Mizuno (scream and dance), and Moa Kikuchi (scream and dance). Their backing band is the Kami Band. The term "Kami" means "god" or "spirit" so basically, they're "gods of guitar, bass and drums". In the BABYMETAL lore, they are summoned from the dead (which explains the corpse paint in their face) to play for BABYMETAL in their live performances. The Kami Band are group of session musicians and teachers. The members who played here are Mikio Fujioka (black guitar), Takayoshi Ohmura (pink guitar), BOH (6 string bass), and Hideki Aoyama (drums). The other members (who didn't play here) are Leda Cygnus (guitar) and Isao Fujita (guitar). In their earlier days, the group called "BABYBONES" were playing for them but they're not actually playing, they're just mimicking the instruments. [To avoid confusion, Kami Band ACTUALLY PLAYS INSTRUMENTS while the BABYBONES only MIMIC THE INSTRUMENTS] This song is about fighting and overcoming your inner personal demons. In the music video, they seem to be fighting with masked figures which was later revealed that were also them. The music video was also good so it would be better if you check it out. In this UK Download Festival you reacted to, it's been heavily raining so they delayed the set and Koba-metal (their producer) even mopped the stage himself personally just for the sake of the performance and the girls payed it off with an amazing performance. You want to watch the live performances in Japan to get the full effect. Interesting selection for your first watch (Not typical of most reactors but better than Give me Chocolate I guess lol). The music video for Karate explains the lyrics pretty well even for those of us that dont speak/understand Japanese. Babymetal has been around for 10 years and made their first trip to the UK in 2014 and have been touring outside of Japan ever since. They have a huge international fan base. Between Su's voice, the choreography and effort the women put in to every song, and the masterclass musician's in the Kami Band it is hard to find a better put together experience than what you get from Babymetal. I hope you continue down the foxhole because it is definitely worth your time.

To answer your question about the way the band are dressed they are wearing traditional Japanese burial robes and corpse paint. It is said that The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) summoned the Kamis (God / Spirit) of guitars bass and drums to support the chosen three on their mission to lead the Metal Resistance and bring about the birth of a new genre of metal. Yes this band has its own lore which is more fun than anything serious and helps them to create stories for their shows, which you will have to see to believe. It is definitely worth checking out more of them, I am sure you will get a lot of suggestions in the comments

There is a story on that performance. It was raining sees that day and they thought on cancelling, because with all that rain the girls could not dance and no one would come to watch them. But they performed even been raining and everyone went to watch them under the rain. Easy, everyone wants to see Babymetal, they are slowly becoming history in music and no one wants to be left out.

Karate is a song about fighting inner demons. Babymetal is actually a pun. In japanese BE-BI-ME-TA-RU (Babymetal) and HE-BI-ME-TA-RU (Heavy Metal) are almost the same, except for 2 apostrophes: ベビメタル(bebimetaru) and　ヘビメタル (hebimetaru). Of course they also started as "babies", but the pun actually gave them their names. They created a new genre called kawaii-metal (cute-metal). Babymetal was a sub-unit of the idol-school Sakura-Gakuin and started in 2010. As Suzuka Nakamoto was born in 1997 and Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi were born in 1999...well now you know how young they actually were when they started as Babymetal. whats more amazing about this crowd is that it rained downpours and their set was delayed for 45 minutes cleaning up water and covering the equipment. and it was still raining while they did this song and no one left. Babymetal is the first asian band to hit #1 on billboard when their last album came out. at this time the lead singer, Su, was 18 years old and she is getting so much better. Babymetal if you listen to them anymore you will understand they can not be put into a certain box since they do so many different styles of music and they are good at all of them. you will not be disappointed if you continue with Babymetal. they girls were 13 and 11 years old when Babymetal was formed. Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. You already have a lot of information about them, who they are, where they came from, who the musicians supporting them are etc. I will just say that if you don't listen to metal very much BABYMETAL is the ideal band to get used to it - one of the reasons they started was to act as a gateway for people who had not heard metal, so they used the Jpop and Idol aesthetics with the clean vocals of Su-metal and the choreography that most people in Japan would have been familiar with and fused it with metal instrumentation. They hoped that the fusion of genres and styles would lead to more people becoming interested in finding and listening to the rock and metal bands they would not have heard on the radio or seen on TV in Japan at that time. Very unexpectedly BABYMETAL grew an audience and one or two of their videos went viral on RU-vid and they attracted attention from abroad. They made their first trip outside of Asia in 2014 when Su was 16, Yui and Moa still only 14 and they won over every audience and festival crowd they played to. Since then they have toured the world every year and are now by far the most successful Japanese band internationally of all time. They have a very big following in countries all around the world and sell out pretty much wherever they play. In Japan they sell out arenas whenever they play even though they are far from being the biggest band or group there. They play virtually every metal genre but will also mix in many other musical styles and genres with the metal. Some songs are very heavy others lean towards their pop roots and they do everything in between. Every song is different and if you don't like one song the chances are very good you will like the next. Looking at your playlists I think their latest single 'BxMxC' might be a good song for your next reaction.

The ladies certainly proved their 'metal' when they played a triumphant show on Download Festival's Lemmy Stage (the main stage alongside Zippo's Encore stage) this weekend. It poured with rain, hailstones fell from the sky and the stage had to be swept. The genre-busting trio was delayed for 30 minutes before they could perform, but not even the worst that the British weather could throw at them stopped Su-metal, Yuimetal and Moametal from delivering their trademark high-octane metal show. Express Online caught up with Su-metal for a chat backstage. How does it feel to be back at Download again? "This year, we were honored to perform on the main stage for the first time. Although it was raining really hard, I was glad that there were so many people enjoying our set and being excited to see our show." Which other bands are you most looking forward to watching at Download? "I’m looking forward to see RAMMSTEIN’s show and also KORN and ALL TIME LOW." This was an appearance at Download Festival in 2016. Part of their world tour in 2016. They started the tour headlining Wembley. They closed the tour by headlining two back to back sold out nights at Tokyo Dome... 55,000 people per night. Their most recent album, Metal Galaxy in 2019, reached #3 on the Billboard Chart in the USA, making it to #1 on the Rock Chart. Their Album release concert was at the Forum in Los Angeles. They have a very large and extremely dedicated international fanbase, touring from Japan to the UK, all through the EU, into Russia, and the United States.

I can add some information about their international reputation. Their activities have been worldwide since 2014. In the latest world tours from June 2019 through March 2020 (until the pandemic started), they performed 20 times in USA, 19 in EU/UK/Russia and 1 in Taiwan in addition to 15 in Japan. Their millions of fans in the world are looking forward to welcoming them in fans' countries but they can't because of the pandemic. They, however, carefully restarted their concerts here in Tokyo with very strict countermeasures against infection. Road of Resistance live in Japan is a very good live video and shows off the sound much better. Road of Resistance was written for Babymetal by Dragon Force I believe. If you watch something like the video for Pa Pa Ya song, you can really see the crowd they draw, it's incredible.

"The Magic of Music" well said. Su-Metal said "Don't think just feel" when talking about the music as well. BABYMETAL can't be stuffed into one genre box. They break the mold in every way. You just opened up a whole new galaxy if you dare go down this Fox hole more. I say do it! You won't be disappointed. There is way too much cuteness, bad assness, and talent ahead.

Get the lyrics and watch the official video for the song and you will understand why they are loved by their fans. I recommend "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" next. It's a song about anti-bullying (the title actually means "No bullying ever".

My response to your reaction. I would say be a little less myopic when commenting on what the audience can only sing- in regards to the whoa part in the chorus. When English speaking bands travel to other countries and sing in English, not everyone speaks English in those countries/cities either, even in European countries. It could be an English speaking band touring in: Paris, Rome, Moscow, Rio De Janiero, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, Athens, Warsaw, Tokyo, Istanbul and/or Beijing. People in those cities may know English but guaranteed, not all. And some may know how to say the lyrics they are singing but may not know the meaning of the words or may have an interpretation that may not make sense in their native language. You have bands like Rammstein who are from Germany and sing in German and they also travel the world. When Rammstein comes to the U.S., thousands of people go to their sell-out shows. The vast, vast, vast majority of Americans do not speak German. How many Americans singing the chorus of a Rammstein know what they are singing such as: "Ich tu dir weh/Tut mir nicht leid/Das tut dir gut/Hört wie es schreit" ? Ultimately, it's about the music and the sound that gravitates people to it and to the artist. The vibes in the music is the language that comes first and foremost. The language is in the rhythm, beat, riff, clever hook- it's the sound of the music that speaks, that makes you move & drawn to what you hear or not. You understand this language because it will either make you enjoy it, dislike it or be indifferent to it. The words/lyrics are secondary.

Are they famous? Not really... they got lost and happened to wander into Download's main stage, with a HUGE crowd. LOL. Nice reaction !!! First exposure to BM is always a bit confusing, and this video doesn't have the best audio, but you can see the connection they have with the crowd. Next time check a BM live video from Japan, and you'll see that at a whole different level (plus the production and performance they put into their headlining shows).
