Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain’s beef was the result of two GOATS vying for one pedestal

You'd think with so much in common, (height, both like same sport, both worked for Lakers) Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul Jabbar would be the best of friends. But something about being constantly compared to each other, having differing political views, and one guy getting more love from fans, press, and the league can apparently sour a relationship quite badly. Enjoy this aged, vintage NBA beef!

Please take a moment and appreciate all of your accomplishments. You are doing great and will continue to do great. Ok now go back to enjoying two dudes who were better than 99.99999999% of the world at their sport beef over who was better. Just two rings? Pfff get it together, Wilt.

Its documented that Wilt chamberlain would go into segregated cafes & restaurants and just sit down, that's not the actions of a young man who didn't care! Wilt Chamberlain went to seven or eight finals in 14 years. Half of the teams he took there had no business being there. Wilt Chamberlain and his teams also lost four game sevens to the Celtics by grand total of nine points. That means his teams, with one shot more going their way in those game 7's, would have won six or seven titles. Bill Russell also admits that had he not seven or eight Hall of Fame players backing him up, he would not have won against Wilt Chamberlain. People do not knock LeBron James today for only winning four out of 12 finals. Wilt was going to the finals just as often relative to the length of his career, with teams that were even worse than what LeBron had to work with.

4 of 12 for LeBron? It's 4-6 right. Wilt won 2 titles (1967, 1972) and lost 4 other Finals (1964, 1969, 1970, 1973). So he was 2-4. The 1964 Finals were dominated by Boston, but Wilt's teams could have won the other Finals vs. the Celtics or Knicks. They had home court in 1969 vs. the Celtics (Russell's last game) and in 1973 vs. the Knicks, plus Reed was injured in Game 5 in 1970. Lakers should have pulled that one out. So Wilt could have had 5 rings in his career and Russell 1 or 2 less, for 9 or 10 rings for him. Still a good lead for Russell, but it wouldn't have been a landslide like 11-2. .

This was awesome. Thank you for this view at the Wilt vs Kareem saga. I was born as a Laker fan and always was told about the '72 team being the greatest ever - based on West, Chamberlain, Goodrich, 69 wins and a banner. I remember seeing Kareem's greatness 1st hand though, his trade to the Lakers was a moment of my life I will never forget. Wish I could go back to being 10 yrs old again...oh well. I have no 1st hand memories about Wilt except many of the gripes he would say about Kareem. I do remember Kareem being categorized as lazy, since he would not always hustle back on defense...and yes, I remember that being the case many times as well. Still, I can't help think of Kareem as the true GOAT. With that in mind, I can only imagine seeing the greatness of Wilt first hand. I will say that the conversation of who is the "one and only" GOAT is garbage. Each generation has a dominant player or sometimes several even. Mikan, Russell, Wilt, Kareem, Magic, Bird, Micheal, Shaq, Kobe, LeBron (lots of Lakers!) and others all took turns as GOAT of their particular eras. I say they were all true, verified, legendary GOATS and that there are even more coming on the basketball horizon. Get ready.

Like you stated he just had 1 game that entire 1962 where he scored Over 50. The only thing he goes up in is rebounds by 1.6 And yes Wilt got 1 finals MVP so congrats to him but it doesn’t compare to the players who actually have a goat discussion. No. The two really aren't even comparable. MJ was one of the biggest celebrities of his day, the highest paid athlete of all time, and widely called Black Jesus. Wilt Chamberlain was hated in every city in America, discredited at every turn, and widely called the N***** Goliath. They were both amazing at basketball, but Jordan had an ego, Wilt felt like he had to defend his validity as a human being.

I'm with Wilt ALL the way as a player. Prime reasons are I feel he (and Russell) excelled at what I feel are main responsibilities of a center are. Rebounding Rim protection Defensive intimidation But humility and easier teammate to play with? Yeah I'll probably give that to Kareem. Kareem, esp as he got older, didn't expend the same energy overall that he once did. And he admitted Magic coming aboard had much to do with it.
