Karen story: My grandma actually asked to speak to the manager to complain about the layout of the line to the cash registers. She was actually complaining about the layout of the store as if this innocent employee had constructed the store herself. I didn't want to turn her ire on myself, but i made sure to apologize to the employee on her behalf.

My Karen story: I worked as a cashier at Hobby Lobby, and Karen comes in and asks where the hair ribbons are. After I pointed them to her, she came back and demanded to know where we kept “the purple ones”, and to get them from the back room. My store didn’t have a back room, what you see is all we have. I told her I could place an order and we could contact her when we get a new shipment, but’s she wanted them NOW and there HAS to be a back room where there is more. Surprise, surprise, she asked for my manager. My manager had to explain to her that we didn’t have a back room and maybe she could make another hair ribbon out of the rolls we have in the craft section? She ran to get some and came back with more equipment. She pulled out the 40% coupon, so I scanned it on her most expensive item. She asked if she could use it on the other items as separate transactions, but I told her I was very sorry bc it’s one person per transaction and it’s against store policy. She stared complaining and holding up the line for her stupid ribbon. Cue calling for Mr. Manager again. (God bless him) He told her that it is not possible to scan the coupon again for another item bc it was against store policy. She. Went. Off. She was yelling in his face, stood there like “I’m not moving until I get what I want”, being all whiny, then she was threatening him, threatening me, etc. Bless my manager, he didn’t give in and didn’t leave me alone with her. He protected the cash register with the fortitude of a knight protecting his maiden’s virginity. She cussed at us as she paid and huffed out the door. I swear I’ve never had to deal with someone so entitled in my life, and I hope I never have to deal with her kind again.

My problem I have with the word Karen is that it has lost its original meaning. It started off as a way to point out bad behavior from people that are quick to anger twords employees and always ask for the manager and throw a tantrum to try to get there way. But now it’s just a word used when someone disagrees with another person’s opinion. It’s just like the word boomer. Boomer was a way to call out beliefs that felt outdated. Now it’s used the same as Karen. They might as well be interchangeable at this point because they are almost always used in a way to try to shut down your opinion. And when somebody does use the word in a correct context it’s easy to dismiss them because the word is misused all the time.

oh so one day at my unnamed business i work at. this lady with 3 kids comes in at 8:58. Literally 2 minutes before we close and says “why are the doors locked yall close at 9 right?” me being acting manager says “yes ma’am we close in 2 minutes though” and she BARGES IN WALKING PAST ME saying “well if y’all close at 9 the doors shouldn’t be locked at 8:58” being a total jerk to everyone in the store and keeping us from closing for another 15 minutes. and the thing that kills me is the lady had the nerve to say “i’ve been trying to bring my kids here for 3 days now but everytime i’ve tried it’s closed” like maam, we are open from 11-9 every day of the week and you couldn’t make time to bring your kids at a normal time during the day. ridiculous

I live in denmark and worked in a relatively high-class restaurant as a chef. One day, an actual elected offcial came by the restaurant and wanted some food 10 minutes before closing time. So we had obviously cleaned and were practically ready to leave. The waiter informed her that we would not be serving anymore food as we were already pretty much closed. She then proceeded to stick her head into the kitchen and ask me, if i "couldn't just turn everyting on again and make her something fast". When i informed her that this was not possible, she proceeded to throw a minor fit explaining to us that we were being very disrespectful to her and told us, she would leave a negative review. Still baffles me to this day.

I had Karen come into my shop 4 minutes before closing with a flat tire. the tire was literally in 2 pieces and she lost her shit at us when we told her that we can't repair a tire that's that damaged. I even offered to put her spare on for free but she continued to yell at us thinking that would make us do the impossible.

Had a Karen throw a cake at me and my boss because we charged her 8 dollars more. We had warned her the previous day her tedious custom-ordered 4-layered round custard-filled cake held-up by plastic and looking like the leaning tower of Pisa would cost more (we just weren't sure how much at the time). 15 minutes of this back and forth with the boss, she eventually snapped, threw the cake, stormed out swearing, called corporate, and my boss got in trouble for not caving into her demands. Karen story: when i was a teen i worked at a fast food place and a "karen" came in to order a works burger (for those outside australia a works burger is salad, meat, bacon, egg, pineapple and cheese) she asked for no meat because she said she was vegetarian, i made her burger and wished her a good day, 5 mins later she comes back and throws the burger in my face, the thing exploded covering me in beetroot juice and sauce and told me i was "a fucking idiot" and that "my parents probably wish i was never born" because "there was no bacon on my burger", when i informed her bacon was meat she did the "i want to speak to your manager" my manager saw everything and was already on the phone to security. We had security footage and everything so she got banned from the entire shopping centre complex.

I used to work at a private mailing store, place where you could drop off something and we'd pack it up and send it through any carrier you wanted. Once a woman we sent a package through USPS for had it bounce all around, basically never getting delivered. Which I get it, that sucks. But somehow despite it being on some random Post Office truck after a couple weeks she blamed us for refusing to deliver it. We explained it's out of our hands and even showed her the tracking history. Then one day she showed up about a half hour after we were closed and me and my coworker were counting money and locking up and just pounded on the front door. Explained the situation again and how both we and the Post Office are closed now so there's literally nothing we could do. She of course threw a fit and yelled at me. Five minutes later when we're about to leave we let a call go to the answering machine and it's her, screaming about how we're all scammers, stole her package and how she's going to stand out front of the store every day from then on with a picket sign to protest our 'greedy malicious actions'. Obviously me and my coworker were dying laughing and obviously she never bothered to 'protest' us, but that was probably the best Karen experience I've ever had.

My Karen story: Worked in food service. Specifically, Mediterranean food such as schwarma and all of that. We always served it hot off the grill. A woman comes in orders a beef schwarma plate. She then sits down stares at her phone for 30 minutes. Not even kidding it took her that long. Never touches the food. Then she finally decides to eat it. She spits it out and demands we give her the money back and give her new food because her food was stone cold. Accused me of giving her old food then asked to see the owner. He saw all of it and said "Well your food tends to get cold when you do not touch it for half an hour. So dont blame us for you not eating your food soon enough to eat it while it was hot and fresh like we always serve our food."

Funnily enough there's only one male in our group of bakers at the Cheesecake Factory and WE'RE the ones who refer to the Karen's as they are, he doesn't. These people obviously don't get that Karen is a term referring to someone complaining over something totally normal. I got yelled at by a Karen and had my manager called over (he was on my side thank God) for having to wait 4 minutes for us to fill her order when she was 5th in line on our tickets, but first at the counter. I guess online orders aren't a thing in her head. She waited 4 minutes and complained to my manager when I even bumped hers up ahead of time so she didn't have to stand there waiting for us to finish the other 5 orders ahead of hers. THAT'S why we hate the Karen.
