The great thing about Kate Bush is that even after listing to a dozen songs and you think you have her figured out, the very next song has you going ... "what the hell?" A great example of the type of song I am talking about is "Cloudbusting". I won't say anything about the song/video other than to say that one of the main characters is played by the great Donal Sutherland.

Her voice is so cool it seems really random and whimsical but it actually is intentional and turns into melody naturally... I recognize this lady from another song years ago but i did not hear this song before

Great vid mate. I'm from Yorkshire and have the day off tomorrow. I'm meeting my brother for a walk on Haworth Moor, the wuthering heights that I've walked countless times. There's a poem by Kate Bush etched into the stone up there. I myself have poems buried in the hillside. Maybe one day many years from now someone will dig them up and wonder about the author and the girl they're about. It's a fine place.

The white dress version serves the song better. This red dress version I think was originally a promotional demo, shot in the English countryside one foggy morning. ( just a bit of fog) I think this video has more appeal for fans who are curious about her first creative steps as a young teenage artist. It doesn't do much for me, and I am a huge Kate fan. She probably had no intention of releasing this version, and it must be remembered that music vids did not exist in 1977-78. MTV would not take off for several years after Kate's debut, so her music vids from the first two albums were likely for promo purposes only. I found the live footage from the Hammersmith Odeon in 79, to be much more powerful and compelling than her early videos.

I like this one because it is just Kate being Kate. My guess is that this was a low budget video. I believe the white dress version is from an appearance on a TV variety show in England.

Hi and thanks for this. For me personally the 'White Dress' version will always be the definitive video version of this song. But to tell the truth I would usually just turn to the album audio version and listen to it without the video. In relation to the song itself, the comments by Morris Pert, one of the session musicians who performed on 'Wuthering Heights' are worth noting. Pert also worked with Paul Macartney, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Elvis Costello, Bryan Ferry and many others. He said: "We knew nothing about Kate Bush at all. We just assumed that this was another young girl, pop singer etc. We turned up on the session and there she was, I think she was 19. And we started working, and within 20 minutes or half an hour we realised that we were not working with your average pop singer, we were working with a very talented young lady both in terms of composing and in lyric writing [...] we all went to the canteen at the bar and we thought that either she was going to absolutely bomb or she is going to start a complete revolution." When the song received its first Radio 1 play in the UK (Radio 1 was the most listened to national rock/pop radios station in the UK), Paul Gambaccini a US born DJ/radio presenter on radio 1 listened to it from the adjacent broadcasting studio while it was played by the Canadian born DJ/radio presenter David 'Kid' Jensen. Gambaccini said that as he listened to it with its key changes, tempo changes etc: "I was in my studio preparing to go on. Kid Jensen was in the next studio, on air, [...] at one point I thought to myself, oh my god, the motor has died, meaning in the turntable, because that was the point where her voice would lower and slow. I had now idea that someone would deliberately do that in the middle of a pop record [...] it was genius, it was indescribable brilliance, inconceivable brilliance, she was 19 years old [...] it wouldn't have occurred to anyone to use as a lyric, a novel that had been written (so long ago) she did so in a way which struck home emotionally, it really was of the deepest primal need. it was a sensational bit of songwriting.'

I prefer the white dress version myself, but Kate does look lovely in this, and there's a certain nostalgic tone to the film and camerawork. The red dress almost feels kind of Japanese to me. But white dress is more expressive and hypnotic... like she's casting a spell on the viewer.

Wuthering Heights is part of the canon of literature in the UK. Has anyone actually read it? Good question. Mostly if it was a set text at High School (A level in England) or University. Most people know it through a film or TV adaptation. I thin Kate Bush had both read it and seen an adaptation on TV. As for preference I prefer white dress as it's iconic. The red dress peformance I find a little distracting for me. However I am in awe of Kate Bush's dance abilities - especially on uneven ground. It's quite phenomenal, so I have total respect for abilities. If you can master this dance routine you have a ful body workout in terms of balance and flexibility!

I'm not a dancer so these are details I didn't pick up on. The uneven ground would certainly add to the difficulty. I'm impressed. Thanks!

I also haven't read the book but I'm pretty sure Cathy dies then comes back - ghosting across a foggy moor (hence her standing in one - in the later video they use effects to achieve the same setting) - to try and steal heathcliff's [sic] soul.. so really i think her whole deal in the video is pretty genius: her crazy, exaggerated moves are meant to summon up visions of a blurry, freaky ghost that kinda resembles a woman the guy loved, trying very hard to communicate with him despite her being 'of another world' now... Full of desperation, her voice falling and rising on the wind.. it's an artistic triumph, of the same variety as mines and stage actors.. I'm a ...23 year tool fan, i think of the tool songs the kind of driving, emotional and communicative nature is this song reminds me a lot of 46&2... But it's nicer, more rooted in culture and folklore.. both epic songs, two different.. auras (since we're tool fans i can talk like that)
@richardm6985
@richardm6985 6 месяцев назад
Imagine if she was 150 yards away singing this over a howling gale, you'd just see this crazy shape and only hear the highest notes.. so the desperation she just be feeling to get through to this distant guy, i dunno it's very will resolved, for me.

I haven't been really pixelated for a couple of years - but I don't get asked to frat parties though so that's good. The video was shot on the planet Kate Bush a wonderful and sometimes dangerous place, sadly only a few videos ever made it over into our world so we have to treasure what ones we have. I think you may like reacting to "James and the Cold gun" live at Hammersmith Odean 1979. It is a bit from her only tour - she is a mesmerizing performer with hips that put Elvis Presley to shame, in this song she does a few minutes of a stylized western shoot out - it's captivating. It was considered spectacular and from the music press (courtesy of Kate Bush Encyclopedia) Melody Maker called the Birmingham show “the most magnificent spectacle ever encountered in the world of rock. (…) I hadn’t expected to be impressed by her as a singer, both she and the band were nothing short of immaculate”. According to Sounds, the show was “so finely realised that it’s beyond criticism”. Not too shabby a review.

You've got very good production values for a small channel; you're good at talking as well. Although I would add more opinion, and ask less questions, in my humble opinion. All best.

I enjoy your humour, I like your honesty, your takes are as valid at any other and most of the others are so boring they'll drown in Arizona *bay so carry on mate Anyone say it yet? She was like 17 or something when she did this.. I think Maynard took plenty of dance moves from this video

I prefer the White Dress version but the Red Dress video has become iconic and celebrated* throughout the world and it doesn't fade out too early like the other one. It might be Salisbury Plain. *See The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever.

I only saw the "White Dress" version here in the UK and apparently it was the version shown in the UK and European markets. The White Dress version certainly has had more critical acclaim being described as a milestone in pre-MTV videos and "Pitchfork" ranking it as number 3 on the list of greatest videos from the 1970s. As for the "Red Dress" version it might have been filmed closer to the original planned release date of the single, until it was delayed when Kate objected to the original cover for the single. Therefore making it the 1st "Wuthering Heights" music video chronologically. I assume that this was the video that was shown outside of the UK and Europe. One interesting aspect of the "Red Dress" video is that ultimately it led to a worldwide celebration that takes place on or near to Kate's birthday known as "The Wuthering Heights Day Ever" where groups of people gather together to perform Kate's dance moves wearing red dresses mostly, to Kate's vocals. There are many examples of various such events from around the world on RU-vid. So that sense the "Red Dress" version of the video has ended up with a longer legacy that the other version. However, from my particular point of view, the White Dress version is my personal favourite, since it's the version that I'm most familiar with and it's also the one that "sealed the deal" as far as being a Kate Bush fan is concerned. In terms of other Kate Bush songs you could react to there are plenty to choose from, one which has such an interesting and dare I say it unique point of view is Breathing.

People need to chill the f*ck out that give people the freedom to learn. Criticism of someone for not knowing something, that you actually want them to know, is such a backwards logic. The great thing about platforms like this is that we get to learn and share great things with one another. Keep up the great reactions bro.
