North Rockland HS of New York sophomore Katelyn Tuohy breaks the national high school record in the girls' mile at the 2018 New Balance Nationals on June 17th in Greensboro, North Carolina!
Why are you using men's qualifying standards??? Touhy's a women. Also, the standard of 3:45 (for men) is for 1500m. MUCH shorter than 1609m (mile). You made a small mistake. That's cool. Try not to call out people for being dumb when you don't have your facts straight though. Have a great day!
That's the thing about running though. There really aren't that many variables..the girl in second knew she was losing before the race started even though she probably ran great because she knows her time and the time of katelyn..as a wrestler myself there are several factors that can happen for an upset..not in running. You basically know who is best
W Sjr that doesn't make it easy at all. That's breaking a national record. She almost definitely was in serious pain for the next week. No amount of running makes a solid record look easy. Running 5K doesn't make a single mile at sub 5 minute pace easy
She holds the national record in the 5k also. At the time she ran it. It was the world number 4 5k. I mean 4th fastest ever by a female of any age. She ran a sub 5 sec. Mile out of the gate in that race also.
@@jasonwarner6323 her first lap was a sub 5....she ran a 15:37 making her average mile pace a around 5:12. Almost a 40 sec difference, which leaves you with more energy than you think
@@trentsmith5218 sorry Trent but I think you should know 5k is 3.12 miles therefore she was running 5:02 pace on average. It may not sound like a lot but that difference is between national record and state meet winner. For women if that was not clear.
Just imagine what she would have done with some competition to push her. She is so superior to her peers that even in a national meet no one is even in the same class that she is. That was like a college athlete competing against middle schoolers.
Why the hell would anyone compare her to male runners?! FYI; in track and field the women and men don't compete against each other. It's Richard vs. Richard and Gina vs. Gina.
Raul - Yes, this girl's national high school record is roughly the same as the unlimited men world beer mile record. What a bizarre comparison; world class men runners against a girl in high school.
Raul Quezada I'm not bothered in the least. Nothing you could ever do or say would give me the slightest concern. You, however, are whining like the last place girl in this race.
I've won one running competition on my life. It was a 3km run,it took me 25 minutes to finish and the only reason I won was because I was the only person in my age group.
As a high school baseball player I was forced into taking part in a conference track meet to represent our school. I picked the 220 yard run. (It was a long time ago) I had never run it before but I tried to gauge how fast I would have to run. I looked at the other guys and they looked like greyhounds. I thought "Damn! I'd better kick it in the ass". I took off like a shot and was rounding the turn in first place feeling good about myself. Then I hit the wall. I was completely out of gas and the other guys passed me like I was a tree growing on the track! Embarrassing.
@@officerearl1543 it actually makes it harder. you wouldn't understand because you're clearly nowhere near the pro level of running i was stuck with a 1:16 half marathon for 6 months and then today i met a guy on the course, we stuck with each other and his pace was really pushing my limit, and guess what, I broke my personal record with a 1:13 today
Based on the olympic results in Rio she's already a top 25 runner in the world for the 5000m, and not far off in the 1500m... And she's a sophomore in high school. damn.
I think giving God any credit at all totally undermines what she was able to accomplish. People need to start to take responsibility, Fact is, that young woman, although naturally talented, did all the work herself. I can only imagine the hours and hours of running and training it takes to become such an elite athlete. It shows hard work and perseverance pay off. I don't give God glory. All the glory should go to that superhero of a young woman.
I know it’s about her but that one girl running behind her was also running really great in my opinion Edit : not you guys commenting that I’m saying this cuz she’s black da fuq has that to do with her running . I commented this a year ago why can’t i just say she was doing a great job . Like the first comment said , she was ahead of the group just like Tuohy . I’ll probably be back in another year can’t wait to get dragged by you guys again
@dave4248 shame she will be forgotten? She got smoked. That's usually how it works lol let's create a hall of fame for athletes that didn't even come close to winning lol
watch her HS junior yr "4th in the world age group" 5K run 15:37 time. she honestly lapped the last place runners 4 times and the 2nd place girl a 3rd time w/about 100meters to go.
I'm 66 and have been following Track & Field my whole life. This young lady has the most beautiful stride I have ever seen. She will rewrite the record books. I've also seen a close up interview of her; she is well spoken, gracious, humble and a beauty to behold . I am in awe...
Don Jindra, Katelyn is only a high school sophomore, so she still has plenty of time to perfect her form. The fact that she already has a good stride, good enough stamina and a strategy to run a mile at this age is very impressive!
AverageGirl, I'm very impressed. It may be she doesn't need to perfect her form. Everyone is different. I've always believed that if you run enough miles, which she obviously has, your body will eventually find the most efficient way to run -- an efficiency that's personally suited to your body.
Don’t be disrespectful to the actual professional woman distance runners. OTQ by 2019 would be very impressive- beating Helen Obiri, Siffan Hassan, or Shelby Houlihan in the 2020 Olympic final? Come on now...
She runs with power, has perfect technique (especially her arm movements), runs an even pace, and could've had a better split on the last lap if someone was pushing her (but that PA announcer did his best to help in that regard). She can probably pick from multiple races to choose what she focuses on when she runs professionally because she has all the tools for all the middle distance races. What do you think will be her best race moving forward? This is all I've seen of her so far so I don't know how she fairs in the other events.
wiley schmitt Great observations Wiley, especially good analysis of Katelyn's power which comes from her arms. Running essentially against the clock, she only slowed 1.23 seconds over her second half mile split. I think this is her 3rd National Record set this year and as she grows stronger with age and training, look for her to become one of the best 5k and 10k Olympic runners in her future. Right now, her 15:37.12 5000 Meter time (January 2018 on an indoor track) ranks *4th in the World.* That is IAAF (Open Division) so you can see that her future is very bright, not to mention her present day. A great athlete now, to become a sensational legend as the years pass.
I don't get how I look like I just got shot after a hard last lap. Somehow right after they finish these elite people are walking around, hugging, etc. ??
French Bulldog 1 bro why the fuck are you typing like you’re writing a goddamn telegram? What’s with all the caps and spaces before punctuation? You that mad a girl can still stand after running?
She's like a machine!! Her form, body positioning, stride, head position, arm position and movement ..... never changes!!! Reminds me of the Posse chasing Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. They never broke formation, never went faster or slower, never stopped, never got tired.
1:23 I'm the girl in the back, behind from the start (EDIT- NO I WAS NOT LITERALLY THE GIRL THERE I DIDN'T SEE THESE COMMENTS HAHA, i was just making a joke because that would be me running IF I WAS IN THE RACE!!, i'm not the best runner!! but yes she is amazing, she is amazing to be in this race already!!)
Hi! I just saw this video and your comment. Just the fact that you made it into this elite group of runners says a lot for your capability as a runner. No shame in coming in last out of a group like that. Best of luck with your future endeavors!
@@o3_o3_28 Thanks, I thought she meant that literally, rather than figuratively. Especially since the comment above me was supportive too & had no response that said differently.
Her rhythm and cadence is exemplary, very little wasted movement in her action. Steady makes fast, and fast makes victory. If you watch some of the other runners in that race, you'll notice uneven cadences in some of them. Arm swings that swing forward at a different rate than backwards, shoulders blades that rotate forward and back with each stride rather than keeping them more static, even the amount of hair on the head can make a difference. She is an excellent runner, the best in the nation at this point.
Agreed. Torso and head have almost no movement at all. Focused motion. In comparison, the other girls look like ragdolls in the agitate cycle of a washing machine. In the third lap her arms and legs lost a bit of precision and sharpness of motion... and will power took over. I remember what that feels like. Nothing feels more "alive" than crushing your physical barriers with the hammer of your will. Congrats Katelyn.
Aside from praising her about her victory, can we just take a moment to appreciate her nice stride? It is one of the best strides I've seen in a long time. Great race against the clock
I am almost 72 years old. I read the comment about her head, shoulders and arms. I tried this morning to throw my arms more back behind me and as a result I ran a 5 k on the treadmill as my personal best. It really made a difference. I ran before with no training Thank you for the advice commentators who know running. I hope to do very well in the 5 k runs this year in Florida. I am aiming at 27 or 28 minutes. Wish me luck me luck. This young woman inspires me
Saw her run in the NY State X Country championship last fall in upstate. Cold, snowy, crappie day. Wind blowing right off Lake Ontario. She won her race by 44 seconds.....
Wow, just amazing. Looks like she's sprinting all the way but does barely lose any speed at all. I really wish her the best and that she continues into the senior. Would be so fun to see what she could do in like 5 years.
GroceryBag Hi there grocerybag its going quite well. I started lifting weights again after 15 years of nothing. Im not actually overweight about 200 at 6ft. But I was a couch potatoe. A gym opened across the street that I had been passing daily for 6 months and finally i signed up no more excuses. The soreness is gone from the first few weeks fortunately I lifted extensively tjroughout the 90s so it isnt too bad getting back in shape. Thank you for asking
A grocery store is located 1 mile from Katelyn's house. Mom says could someone run and get me some milk. Of course Katelyn says I'll do it. Meaning she literally is going to RUN for it. Any excuse to go run. 15 minutes later she's back with the milk. Katelyn says, sorry it took so long. I should have been back sooner. Couldn't find the milk fast as I wanted to.
Notice how the other runners do not pump their arms nearly as much as Katelyn does. Her fists are chin high throughout the entire race. Pumping your arms faster will cause you to run faster.
From the very start the pedal was to the floor and never slowed and the last lap she even found yet another level , how , great lungs, strong heart, amazing determination , all of the above with extraordinary grit. Not what Is usually on my playlist, glad it came up, expect to se her star rise
Thanks for posting and OMG this girl is something else. What a gorgeous stride she has. Been watching videos of her setting longer distance records. But this was darn impressive. Man I just pray everything goes right for her the next few years. Selfishly it would beyond fun to watch her keep setting records. GO KATELYN!!!
Wow, this video gave me the chills, she is so determined to break the record, she is running against a ghost, she is running against herself, she is pushing herself to her physical and mental limits, amazing stuff.
I am not an emotional man. I teared up, not letting a drop fall, but I know what you went thru to get there. My father was an All American runner, I know the training, I know the goals, I know the dedication, the obsession, and to see it develop into this is amazing. Katelyn Tuohy, if nothing else you are a GREAT runner and an inspiration to many if not all runners. Keep the obsession, keep the dedication, keep the stride, and always shoot for beating yourself because there is no one else to beat at this point. You go girl!
It's crazy how she beats my mile time by a whole 2min. I consider myself a good runner, but I genuinely don't think that I could ever get within 1 minute of her time. She's insanely talented. Also a shout-out to the girl who was 2nd, because she is a great runner too!
@@brando3465 6:30 for a women is certainly a good runner. Not an elite runner, and not a time that would ever make you competitive. But I would say it's higher than the vast majority of the general population. Which should probably at least qualify as good.
An amazing accomplishment from a gifted and hard-working athlete. KT has been stunning crowds and the national running scene for several years. She keeps getting stronger and faster. It is a wonder to watch her powerful strides and clear determination.
The Secretariat of high school milers... Sometimes, it's enough to make a day by taking just five minutes of one's life to appreciate excellence. Whether or not she goes on from here doesn't matter. She will always have this day.
I graduated high school in Texas back in 1978. I wasn't on the track team, I played football. However we were timed on the 40 yard dash, the 440 yard dash and the 1 mile run several times a year. I remember my goal on the 440 yard dash was to break 60 seconds which I did my last year. My goal on the 1 mile run was to break 6 minutes which I never did. She beat me by almost 2 minutes. I 'might' have been able to keep up with her for the 1st 800 yards but I would have dropped right there on the track while she kept going. Her performance was nothing short of outstanding....
Its inspiring and motivational as a parent, to see her go straight to her parents makes it emotional for all of us parents that have kids doing sport, what an amazing young lady, just incredible.
Her form is absolutely amazing. The way she throws he legs in front of her but they remain stride and composed is perfect. And she drives her self with her arms flawlessly.
Dinh Le I that is disgusting, why would you ever think that. Being a runner myself, I know the feeling of achieving a major accomplishment such as a PR or but let alone the fact of getting a National Record. And to be automatically given the title “100% Doping” after running faster than you is just a disgrace when clearly she puts in more work then you will get do in a life time. It is purely hard work and effort not substance.
Neal DoubleAA ever heard of Lance Armstrong? This is a good example of why not to dope. He was stripped of seven Tour de France titles because he violated the Anti-Dope code. So in conclusion, you can put in more work but you will not be able to compete fairly with others who do not.
I sit here in nashville TN but grew up in upstate NY and I was a distance runner into my late 20s having posted some decent times back then . I was one who blossomed well after high school and college, but none the less it just occurred to me she has matched my high school times for 1600 and 3200 . There's no telling how fast she will running 5000m in 10 years, 14min 30 sec maybe.
She is so inspiring. I think of her and try to channel her spirit when I'm riding my bike to work. It helps me focus my energy in my body and in the moment. And just to have a good, intentional attitude.
Katelyn Tuohy is amazing, but hats off to some other people. The announcer did a great job of bringing the fans into it with his encouragement to cheer her on, and he ran through every contestant's name as they rounded the first turn, at the beginning of the race. Whoever set up the finish line tape was wicked smart. Notice that the tape was 6 feet past the finish line. Many runners (especially younger ones) will slow down just before the finish, so a very savvy move.
I ran track all through high school (grad 69)....48 second qtr mile (we didnt do meters yet) anchored a mile relay in 3:18.7....but this girl ws as smooth a runner as I have ever seen. I look forward to seeing her in the 2020 Olympics. Wow can she pick em up and put em down.
Jacklynn Bowling I relate. I used to be super competitive with all my sports and extracurriculars. I burnt out. It became too much. And now I just run at an easy pace to get some exercise as it’s not that uncomfortable and just enjoyable. I don’t mind if ppl are faster than me
That was ridiculous, and she's only a sophomore in high school with plenty time to continue to get better at her craft. My first thought after the first lap was, when did the mile run become a sprint? And the crazy part was she got stronger after each lap. Just Ridiculous :) and I wish her the best in her career. GO Katelyn
I’m not a runner, other than what the military made me do my career in military (best I ever did was 6 minutes mile). I am amazed at how little effort it looks like she’s putting into running that fast! Seems to have a long stride as well for such a small woman. Kudos to her and I wish her much success in future. Hopefully her and Boling will earn Golds for us in the future Olympics.
This girl is just amazing! Breaking one record after another. I watched her run the 3200m which also had Kelsi Chmiel in the race and the announcers thought it was going to be a great showdown between the two but as it turned out, Katelyn smoked the entire group and broke another record. She is phenomenal. You go girl...
Watching this race and trying best I can to get the lap times. They basically were 68.5, 68.5, 69.0 and 68.0 minus the .12. So just think if or when she develops a devastating kick? Crazy!!
crazy for sure but I don't think she'll ever develop a kick. could be wrong but from my experience runners like her rely on even splits because they don't have a strong kick.
No kick coming. People always use their speed if they have it. I ran my races just the same. Pure aerobic capacity and pain. She’d have been breathing down my neck for sure.
She may have a kick but you shouldn't see it in that race. A good runner would run even splits in a race against the clock. Kick is a strategy tactic, it has to do with judging the opponent and your position in the race and trying to win. From a biomechanical perspective, it's not used for the best possible time/distance.
She's incredible. I'm a new fan. She's got me watching NCAA track and field....for the first time. I love it. The running, triple jump, pole vault, all of it.
