Whisky in the 6 #124 features a Taiwanese single malt. Kavalan Sherry Cask Solist. This single malt is aged in a 500 litre Oloroso Sherry cask. Check out the video to see if this whisky is worth the hype.
Cheers, W6! Great review and thanks again for gifting us this for our reviewing pleasure. Looking forward to you Four Roses review, good juice. Terviseks! - The Beard
I really recommend to try this in wintertime/ very heavy rain/snow seasons. It just taste fantastic during those times. But as you also said, different cask have different taste. I had some different casks and 2 very just fantastic. 1 of the other ones very quite different. Keep up the good reviews, looking forward to the next ones!
Great review, Rob. Appreciate your honest comparison and opinion between the Sherry and Vinho Barrique. You're correct on the distilled date for your bottle. Here's a quick break down: S = Sherry; 100209 = 2010/02/09; 017 = Cask Number; A = first fill cask
Great review as always. I recommend checking on whiskybase to see how people are scoring a particular cask. It def helps give you an idea before buying. Of course serge is the king of doing whisky reviews but he doesn't do every cask obviously. 6, what kind of camera are you using? I love the picture quality. By the way, Mike and I are massive Game Of Thrones fans. Cheers.
I'm using my iPhone 6S. It's a 4K camera. I'm a major GOT fan. As you can tell from my book collection I'm kind of a Sci/Fi Fantasy nerd...among other things. Not sure how my wife puts up with it. I was lucky enough to find a bottle of this at the time. There isn't a single Kavalan in Ontario available. Thanks for watching Narbe. Cheers.
Well done Rob! Ohh yours is very red - very nice. Amazing for 5 years, huh? Recently got A'bunadh- interesting comparison. My solist is just under 7 - about the same age as the Aberlour. Jealous about the Dronachs - cheers, Mark
There are times when a sherry bomb has no distillery character whatsoever and simply has to be judged on it's quality as a sherry bomb. I'm hoping that's not the case with the Kavalan as I wish to buy a bottle. Talking of Aberlour, I have a 16 year first fill single barrel (bottled for the Whisky Exchange) and the colour is amazing.
The only Solist I had was the amontillado. I think I wouldn’t buy it again for that really expensive price, not because it’s no good, Solist are amazing, but they are also so hot.
W6, that looks very delicious. The Solist expressions are to expensive for me. It would be nice to have a sample before buying any bottle, but that's just not possible. Did I miss the HP 21 review or did you never do it. Great review.
Haven't done the HP 21 yet. Trying to source another bottle before I open this one. Doing the same with HP25. This Kav is good whisky for sure. It seems to be a bit moody in that it takes to certain things I've eaten better than other things.
Great Review bro! by any chance have you had the 46% Sherry cask & Ex bourbon Kavalan? At the Total Wine that's close to me they carry the 46% abv bottles just wondering if you have had any of the non Solist Kavalan line.
I'm interested in the 46% sherry. Serge gave it 89 points, although his was single cask for Maison du Whisky. I'm sure it gets unfairly overlooked because of the super high profile of the Solist range.
Erwingarcia 72, those 2 bottles are suppose to be the exact same juice from the Solist cask and just brought down to 46%. I've read that their suppose to taste great at 46%. I bought the Sherry Oak from the UK. I have not opened it.
I wonder how empty these barrels really are before they put the whisky inside. Really, I get a strong PX-rasin on mine (neck-pour though) and the immense sweetness really remind me of Pedro Ximénez Monteagvdo. Anyone know of empty these casks really are? I mean, I like it, but I feel I am drinking whisky-infused-sherry at the moment. Mine is 9 years, distilled in 2010, bottled in 2019.
The problem is that you have had a lot of good stuff lol. You give that to a person just getting his feet wet, and he/she will be whoa! :) I got over 75 bottles now and some stuff just won't make the cut now lol. I did pick up a Cognac :) Its on twitter...
Glad you reviewed this Rob, I'm thinking of getting one before the price hikes yet again. Kavalan, as you state, are not strictly speaking a NAS. You can work out the distillation and bottling dates from the bottle itself. Glad you got your hands on some Yamazaki 12. The Suntory Nas expressions are not in the same league. Cheers. WT
Good luck trying to get the Yamazaki 18. Actually you can still pick it up in the U.K but it's become hideously expensive in the last couple of years. Three years ago it was less than £100. I have an unopened bottle that was sent to me by mistake when I ordered a 12 year. It's probably the only bottle of it I'll ever have so waiting for a suitable occasion to open it.
Welsh, how does a mistake like that happen. I've seen the Yama 18 as high as $550 in Ca. It started at $79, funny thing is the juice has not changed. So why would I pay such a high price. I won't pay the 2nd market price for anything because of demand or popularity.
Hi Keith, It's not the only time the wrong bottle was sent to me. I had a bottle of very old Eagle Rare turn up once in a postage cock up. I completely agree with what you say regarding the secondary market. Unfortunately it's driven up the retail price too. Yamzaki 18 is a high quality 18 year sherry bomb. Plenty of choice in that market for a fraction of the price.
