Kawasaki's small-displacement Dual Sport is back for 2021 with more displacement, increased power, slimmer radiators, additional suspension tweaks, a new engine balancer, taller gearing and other updates - all in an effort to improve versatility. After weeks of testing over hundreds of miles, in wide ranging terrain, we give a rundown of the new KLX300's performance in the dirt, on asphalt and traveling on the highway, to determine if the latest round of changes really offer a major advantage. Is it still the same user-friendly dual sport? Could it be your Light ADV? What still needs improving? We have answers to all your burning questions!

I hope these manufacturers start making 400-500cc dual sports similar to this with long maintenance intervals. It's literally the only segment of the market left with basically no competition.

I bought a new DRZ in 2020 and honestly I cannot tell the difference as far as carb vs fuel injection. I have two fuel injected bikes and the DRZ with the carb runs as smooth as they do. If I had the choice I would pick fuel injection but I wouldn’t pass on a DRZ because of the carb as the bike has so much to offer including power as compared to these 300 bikes. I think the carb thing is over blown as most anyone who buys a DRZ never regrets it.

Got my 2021 KLX 300 DS earlier this year and love it. Not a rocket but fast enough to be entertaining, especially after the break in period - the suspension has proven to be excellent. While not the best highway cruiser it's great for day long adventures. So far I have also added a better bash plate, wider foot pegs, a rear rack, and hand guards. Upgraded to the slightly lower Seat Concepts Seat (30 inch inseam) - I used the original seat pan. The new seat is a great improvement as the old one was uncomfortable on rides over an hour. The lack of ABS has not been a problem for me - the brakes are easily modulated and I am an experienced rider. I am however new to Dual Sport bikes, I have had a great time learning and exploring off road - the KLX has proven to be very forgiving and tractable and also easy enough to get it unstuck by myself - very happy for the light weight in difficult terrain. I also considered the CFR 300 and I am sure it's another fine Honda product, but I am very happy I selected the Kawasaki. In summary, It's often hard to head home when I am out riding, it has been quite an enjoyable experience owning this unpretentious swiss-army knife-like bike!

I bought leftover KLX 250, lowered the suspension 2” and tuned it to my weight, FMF bomb exhaust, regearing, fuel controller, smog junk removed, bigger pegs, full Green Chile adv setup, Fasstflex bars and handguards. All it needs is a cush seat, usb port up top and big tank. It’s a joy.

This bike sounds perfect for me. I don't have much experience. I don't want to upgrade right away after introduction. I'm 5ft 6 inches and change. This bike doesn't cost an arm and a leg to own new. This can keep up with traffic and it's not super buzzy like my Dad's old 600 Honda. It also has electric start and I'm not sure if I need it but I'd certainly enjoy the maintenance free elevation changes of fuel injection. I can't wait to get one in about 2 years after my house is paid off.

@robdabney
@robdabney 2 года назад
You betcha. It's comfortable, nimble and forgiving in the rocks. Ground clearance is a bit limited for extreme enduro type terrain compared to performance dual sports, but for typical slow rocky trails, it's super confidence inspiring, fun and forgiving. For riders that just want to go out and explore and have fun at a semi-fast pace, not a race pace, it's ideally suited for that.

Oddly enough, I actually just took my camo '21 KLX300 to VT with my fiancee and another couple, coming from NY. It handled everything perfectly - the Appalachian Gap, highway speeds, NYS thruway on the way home... The only drawback is the tank size - hard to pass a gas station. Keeping a Rotopax on the bike is a must.

Yessir, I live in vermont for me it's a no brainer, the trails we have around here are really rough and I've taken my 2022 klx 300 through the worst of it and it handled incredibly well, my only complaints would be the stock tires and the gearing, if you dont keep your pass in second over the tougher technical spots you'll stall out but that's no problem for someone with good throttle control in first gear, all round amazing bike and yes, perfect for Vermont.

Great review. I just took delivery of a’23 last May. I don’t ride as aggressively you were demonstrating, but it’s good to know its capabilities. I added a Ricochet Skid Plate. I see no reason to change mufflers either. I ride in the forests of North Idaho, and I agree, the 2 gallon tank is limiting. Like a tether to the next or nearest gas station. Good review. Only thing I disagree with is when you said it needed ABS. Last thing most of us want is to have to deal with turning it off all the time. I have a 2014 klx250s I bought for my wife for which she rode it on our TAT trip and never once have we ever thought the bike needed ABS. I test rode a new 300 the other day and the fuel injection is nice for sure. The bump in displacement makes the new stock 300 feel about the same as the old 250 with pipe/jet kit/kdx airbox snorkel upgrades. With my wife riding the 250, she regularly gets roughly 80mpg. Myself riding it only gets around 45-50ish mpg but with the larger ims tank we added it was plenty for the TAT. All around good bikes and we plan to keep it for a long time.
@robdabney
@robdabney 2 года назад
Much appreciated! I believe I said it 'would be nice' to have switchable ABS or a separate ABS model for some riders. Personally, I would opt for the non-ABS model for the reason you mentioned but some riders who are using the bike on the street frequently or are new to dirt riding might like to have the ABS as a safety feature. With a big tank and power mods, sounds like a great bike for the TAT!
@dracer35
@dracer35 2 года назад
@@robdabney I understand what you mean. Back in the day when we started riding ABS on bikes wasn't a thing so we just had to learn brake control but I can see how a new rider might want it as long as it's a good system. The first bike I ever rode in gravel that had ABS tried to kill me lol. Went hot into a corner and as soon as I grabbed the brakes the ABS basically did nothing to slow the bike because of the low traction. I was able to click a couple downshifts to lock the rear tire and get the bike pointed in the right direction to make the turn but it definitely make my butthole pucker for a moment. I've always just turned off ABS after that day lol.

Just sold my Honda 450L today. I put over $3500 in accessories on it including the vortex ecu. Made a huge difference but the bike wants to be ridden fast and maintenance intervals suck and at 55mph its very buzzy. Anyway, just not the bike for me at this stage. I've been riding dirt bikes for 35+ yrs. Before the 450L I had the Africa Twin. Cool bike but still not for me. Just way to complicated. So I think I will be going with the KLR300 or CRF and also getting a Tenere 700. My riding consist of going out and exploring and just plain trail riding at a fun pace for me. I love challenging trails but my need for speed...well, I just don't care much for that anymore.

Love the 450L but you're right, it is buzzy at 55+. The KLX300 is much smoother at highway speeds. The KLX300 is all you need for exploring challenging trails at a fun pace and still has something in reserve if you want to crank it up a notch. It's also a more forgiving ride than the CRF450L that will leave you less spent at the end of the day.

If you're just doing general Trails and Single track, 400cc is a Horrible choice......Trust Me, Big Mistake.....you'll wish you had 250 or 300cc....If you're doing "open" dirt roads, desert terrain, etc......Then 400cc is perfect.......but 400cc needs room to open up. It's like taking an F350 down a trail meant for Jeeps or something smaller. Now if you're wanting more street power in the mix, Then 400cc is excellent....there's No lack of power like with 300cc.

No ABS on the KLX300. The CRF300L has an ABS model as an option. The KLX has a bit more power, better suspension and is smoother on the highway. The CRF has a nice plush feel to the suspension though, a slipper clutch, longer maintenance intervals, and it's a few hundred bucks cheaper.

What do you think of dr650 compare to klx300? Or should I get the new klr?.I am an experienced rider and will own only 1 bike.
@robdabney
@robdabney 2 года назад
The DR650 is a workhorse but it's based on an old design from the early 1990s. The KLX is a more modern design with a 6-speed and water-cooled engine. It has a better suspension and weighs about 60 pounds less than the DR. Although the KLX doesn't have the low-end grunt of the DR. If you are going to do more adventure-style riding and want to carry camping gear or go longer distances, on the highway the KLR would be the better choice.

@robdabney
@robdabney 2 года назад
Depends on how far you have to travel there and how rough those jeep trails can get. The KLR or the 390 ADV will be better for traveling to the trails if you need to cover some distance. If you are taking your bike to the trails in a truck or only have to ride a short distance, the KLX300 is easier to manage off-road and easier to pick up.

@@ronsexton3685 There are gas stations on the edge of town you can fuel up at before heading into the hills. You can also bring a small can of gas to extend your range if needed. Even a half gallon would extend range by around 20-30 miles.

The DRZ definitely has more low-end grunt for going up hills. It's also a capable machine off-road but does cost about $1000 more. The KLX feels a little smaller and lighter.

What are the service intervals on this bike? I have been saving up for the last 5 years for the WR250R (which has great intervals for service) and they stopped making them. I’ve been looking at the big 4 companies and this bike seems to pull my gaze. I’d love to pick up a bike in the next year and a half. I wonder if Yamaha will make a WR300R in that time.

For about $700 you can get the CRFL suspension re-sprung and re-valved for your exact weight and riding style, whether you're 160 lb or 260 lb (or even outside that range). That's better in the end than the small amount of adjustment the KLR gives you.

@calcrappie8507
@calcrappie8507 Год назад
Get the Honda. Better dash vs better suspension of the Kawasaki. This is a 2 gallon tank. You're going to get 45 to 70 mpg depending on how hard you ride. That's 90 to 140 miles. A fuel gage isn't going to help you out in the desert. The Kawasaki has a yellow fuel warning light that comes on with about 25 to 40 miles left in the tank (again based on how you ride). Bring another half or 1 gallon with you.
