Keith I had that same problem, everything checked out good, I finally took it to the shop, they put a new set of coils on and it started, just for grinns if you have another set of coils try that .

. Make the left coil plugs go to the plugs for cylinder 1 and 4 and then make the right coil go to plugs for 2 and 3.

It appears in the video that the right coil is plugged into 3 and 4 is that correct?

If that is so, that’s ur problem. One coil has to go to the plugs for 2 and 3, the other coil has to go to the plugs for 1 and 4. The order of the plugs is 1,2, 3, 4 from the pov of sitting on the bike btw. Not to insult ur intelligence you do great work!

Mate that make shift tank your fuelling from is it vented yea or can cause a vacuum and stop the fuel just a thought

yes it is vented, fuel flows freely

Oh and also try to fire the bike with ur hands or something over back of the carbs. These bikes are very very touchy with the air to fuel mixture!

I hear You saying the HT leads are correctly fitted. But I still think it seems like both of Your HT leads from the right coil leads go to cylinder 3 and 4. At least, the number 4 spark plug is clearly connected to the right coil, which according to the parts manual drawings, is wrong. 100% sure! Left coil is 1 and 4 - right coil is 2 and 3.

yes coils are wrong way round right is doing 1 &4 and left is doing 2&3, but wiring to them is correct, as i said to Barry the leads are long but honestly they do go to the right cylinders

Keith I presume you’ve checked the plug caps is the wiring ok at the end of the caps? Years ago I had a z1000 A1 and the copper wire had hardened when I pulled the plug caps off bits of wires fell out . Hope you get it started mate Jon

This is a bummer and quite a mystery. Here are my thoughts: - If the engine races up on starting fluid, I would think there is nothing seriously wrong with timing or spark strength. Otherwise the engine would not fire up, even briefly. - I would verify that fuel is getting into cylinders. Are the spark plugs wet with fuel after cranking it for a while?

it is indeed, been totally rebuilt from the ground up, yes plugs are wet

@@TheAmateurBikeBuilder if the plugs are wet that’s good. Since your carbs only have air adjustment, I would start playing with that a quarter turn at a time. I know you adjusted them per the manual, however these aftermarket kits may not be exactly the same as OEM, so your air/fuel mix may be out. Actually, it may be a good idea to put the original ones back in, if you still have them. There is a good chance they are OEM, so OEM setting should be ok on them.

Apart from the leads being attached to the wrong cylinders as has already mentioned. The only things I can think of is either the timing is out, or the spark plug gaps are possibly too large causing a weak spark?

thanks Barry, i am rechecking timing and points, the leads are very long so gives impression they are wrong but they were connected correctly

Hi, I’m looking at this video trying to work on my own. Everything checks out but it’s not drawing fuel. Carb has been rebuilt. Any ideas?

is it actually drawing any fuel into cylinders? even if timing is out , it should still draw fuel.

Keith when I ran my kz650 from a dummy tank I blocked off the vacuum tube on the carbs

By the way, the coils that the bike shop said was bad, were new, can't always trust new parts.

Compression test? It doesnt say much but just to know. Have you tried starter spray without the carbs?

I noticed that you didn't have the choke on Keith. Mine is a bad cold starter.
