Kearsarge Review: Overpowered Hybrid Battleship

I’m looking forward to a premium BB which has planes and the ability to drop a submarine at the behind enemies.

The icing on the cake is the number of community members saying this is perfectly fine. Even without the planes, it would still be a workable tier 9 BB.

next update is gonna be the I-400 with 15 plane squads

It's the speed that I don't understand. It's got a massive flight deck and a ton of large turrets (so a ton of ammunition). Makes no sense, I demand 5 extra knots on my Yamato xD

All BBs should have their own spotting aircraft which can hover on an area and spot targets and subs.

Who knew in order to make a functional battleship it has to also be a cv?

If this had been just a 12 16" gun US BB with a good heal, in other words a slightly less poweerful Montana, then I would have gotten it, 'cause I love the high tier US BB's. I loathe CV's so I will never get this. As it stands, it is clearly OP. It will probably be nerfed a little, but still.

Just what the game needed more Planes well done WG!.

This just proves that the way to win battles is not improving your in-game skills or coming up with new strategies and tactics but to just buy the latest and greatest new shiny ship that is over powered over everything else in the game. Wallet power over brain power.

This is a great ship for PQ to start training for when he inevitably becomes a CV main

Potato Quality: A CV that can spot for itself, you can't do that. Wargaming: I can do that cause I just did.

Forget full pens. I love demolishing Kearsarges with SAP off my Marco Polo or burn it down with the Conqueror. That huge superstructure eats full HE everywhere you hit it, and it's a bigger target than actual carriers.

I found myself playing as a NC alot of the time with the guns and dispersion. But I find this thing to look absolutely badass.

They need to consider implementing lock on mechanic from MWO at this point, where you only broadcast position of a single target you keep locked, not simultaneously translating all the realtime data for all your team

Spotting is the strongest and most impactful thing any vessel can do in the game, it hands down wins games by itself even if you do 0 damage. WG always dodges the spotting issue by looking at other things and shifting attention to other stats. WoWS is a vision game and the team that utilises it better than the other wins 100% of the time.

3 years ago when I launched my first BB spotter plane, I asked in ingame match if I can direct my spotter... Well, now I can!!!

Keeping the 4 turrets is straightup criminal.

Was an Iowa with another Iowa against 2 Kearsarges. The enemy team basically had 2 CVs that are able to spot. To say that it was a nightmare is an understatement.

Ise & Tone, real ships = Balanced, maybe even too weak Paper/Fantasy ship = Brokenly op and ignores physics Good job once again WG.

the flight deck is also technically auxiliary rooms or whatever so it doesnt saturate nearly as fast of superstructure

Can't wait for the Battleship submarine hybrid.

Try playing a DD at long range in smoke against one of these. Rounds that would normally pen a superstructure now bounce on the armored flight deck. Balanced.

Which one should i get as my first coal ship? ive got 4 tech tree tier tens kearsarge,Marcu,F sherman?

Also it has 5 Bearcats with 3 Tiny Tims. That are 15 Rockets launched while a single strike group from the midway only has 3 Bearcats with 3 Tiny Tims. So tier 9 BB has a better strike group than a Tier 10 Carrier

We complain about OP aircraft carriers so what does WG do? They turn BB's into more CV's. Yeah now we got fire spammers everywhere, God tier subs, OP CV's and now BB's that are really CV's.. If one of the major gaming companies would build a detailed Battleship game that was good I'd be gone from WoW in a minute.

Would you be more okay with the planes if you had a fixed amount of planes and with limited fuel?

I've seen a few of these in game and they are utterly devastating to DDs. I took a broadside of these in my Kit the other day and it ate up 75% of my HP. Unreal.

"It's just _unbelievable_ that this is allowed." I have about the same sentiment about submarines (negatively) and Superships (neutrally), as well as the upcoming "HB" line for the USN (positively). Is it Hybrid BB or HB? Can I use HB?

Jumped back into the game after a few weeks off and ran into this ship on my first game, running in a DD. It was crazy how much they were able to keep people spotted with no real way to fight back. I had them come after me directly once and even with an American cruiser next to me he still managed to get through and dump a ton of damage (due to the fact that they went invincible once in the attack run). The two biggest issues is that the planes do a ton of damage, get the invincible attack run, and even if we have a lot of AA it doesn't matter since they never run out of planes. These ships need to have a limited number of planes, or at least a system similar to a CV for rearming. Removing spotting would be awesome as well. Imagine having a enemy CV pushing/doing damage, a sub pinging, and this ship running planes at you in a BB? All they can do is huddle together and hide at the edge of map. They don't have enough utility to combat it all. On top of this is the fact that this overpowered gimick is pure pay-to-win, there is no way to get anything even close on a non-cv coal/research/tech tree ship.

Kearsarge was formed out of a joint Soviet-American exploration of a concept for a 406mm gun-equipped battleships the Soviets ordered, so naturally the Soviet inheritance would make this blyat at least somewhat high powered.

T9 was the sweet spot where I could play ships and actually have my detection range mean something. Came up against a few of these on the weekend and it sucks. Put them in a CV game and you're perma-spotted more than usual. And being on the Asia server where many people don't like risks or challenges, there are sure to be a lot of these muddying the waters.

Anyone know how to buy this ship miniature? Love the ship's model

I was looking at getting either French or British specialized captains then I saw this for coal. I got it. Though I believe WG will nerf it in some manner, I'm happy to play a US ship that is in this current state. Along with my Ohio I final obtained too.

As much as I DO NOT want to see any more strike-aircraft-carrying ships introduced, I'd love to see a German flugzeugkreuzer and/or flugdeckkreuzer introduced. They were to ship all of their main gun turrets forward, either 203mm, 283mm and even 380mm; if my memory isn't complete shite. 🤪😂 Just a good childhood memory; reading and dreaming of these incredible hybrid ships. The Kearsarge was a purpose built Battleship-Aircraft Carrier hybrid, while the other hybrids where altered after they had been built. So the Kearsarge is really well planned out overpowered abomination of a Warship.

Next we are getting the Lion class battlecarrier

the true most broken part of the ship is that because it's a rocket planes they stick around long enough for you to get a Salvo off from your own spoting Should have been a t10 bb all and all T10 levels of brodside T10 levels of HP T10 squad with an extra 2 planes It's effectively immune to he spam from most dds due to the 38mm flight deck protecting the superstructure...

It could be the most OP ship in the game and I'm still never going to buy it, so ugly.

The ship is not op at all times, but when you play it right at some good situations, thats where your team will dominate, and you can as well.

Honestly i thought it would have been better if the gimmick had been the ability to deploy a fighter squadron anywhere on the map.

This is going to destroy tier 9 clan battles if those ever come back

I won a Kearsarge in a Black Friday container. I have only used it a couple of times because I can't get used to the planes.

Of course, the reason nothing like this existed in reality is it takes away some of the strengths of both a battleship and a carrier for the sake of putting more aircraft in the air. It creates a massive fire hazard in the middle of a battleship and kills a lot of the speed and concealment of an aircraft carrier. I'm not saying it couldn't work but the few real examples of hybrid battleship carriers then Japanse played with didn't end up making much of a, if any, difference to the war.

There was a post on the Steam forum about a DIVISION OF THREE Kearsarges + CV on one team while the other had only 1 of each. The moderator insulted the OP repeatedly and then locked the thread to prevent any further discussion.

This thing looks like a Montana with a different superstructure... It goes the same top speed as a Montana. It has spaced armor... It looks to me like a T9 Montana with a little less armor, a bit worse guns. But with Air Craft.

Gotta love Sealord Mountbatton to give wg props for this thing, call it well balanced and a little weak and judge the spotting as weak cause you don't shoot in that time

PQ, I think you're underestimating how much most players struggle with NC guns. I'm going to guess that it will be fine according to the spreadsheet, so probably no nerfs.

Kearsarge is a fun ship, broken, but very relaxing to play. But I agree, the planes need to be toned down a bit. Maybe the health too.

How long before the historical Japanese carrier subs enter the game? I-13 and I-400 classes.

did they nerf this ship? It's not nearly as simple to hit ships with the planes as in this video - and I am struggling to do damage with the guns. Yes the HE is good, but doesn't seem as good as shown here.

Having nightmares of grief squads, 3 teammates loading up in Kearsarge, devastating entire flanks.

Meanwhile spotter planes don't do any significant spotting, but rocket planes on a BB under fire has no problems launching constantly, while a spotter needs 3 minutes. How many different takes on aircraft are there in Wows now? 4? 5? 1. Consumable aircraft works in one way. 2. Then you have CV aircraft working differently . 3. And CV consumable fighters, also a unique mechanic 4. Dutch bombers. 5. ASW. 6. Hybrid ships. All using different ways to interact with the game and none of it done in a coherent way. They should rework all aircraft into one coherent function that splits spotting and damage into different aircraft.

so Its got a ton of utility and rocket dmg Hard hitting guns And its concealment is decent But It turns like a turd Its squishy af (as the flight deck count as casemate armor so basically can't saturate) And the guns aren't very comfortable to use Looks like a high skill high reward ship

When tier 11 rolls in this ship will help put pressure on superships.

Terrible idea, so starting eith the guns they are meant for medium to short range which means if your a dd it's going to suck. So now long range yes it's a single flight of aircraft but in a game that has become saturated with carrier hybrids all around the same tiers there's so much air spam that all it takes is one round of aircraft to finish off a ship. Which btw these are he rockets so dds are now stuck with that. Also 7 127mm guns on each side as twin turrets that makes it Montana level secondary 127mm battery firepower
